I started reading I Will Never Leave You - it was one of the Kindle First Reads books. OMG it is the worst! That said, I feel a weird guilt quitting in the middle and that I should forge ahead, as if somehow it will get better. I am going to need a light, easy read after this one if I do finish!

If it was free I feel no obligation to finish a lousy book.
I am trying to learn to quit reading a bad book whether I paid for it or not. A number of years ago I slogged through 4 awful books in a row because I had paid for them. I didn’t pick up a book for 3 years afterward. How does one end up with that many terrible books in a row? Two of the 3 authors I refuse to read came from those books.

I generally finish any book I start by telling myself surely it gets better! The older I get though, the harder this becomes .

Nope, put it down and move on! There are so many good books to be read, it doesn't matter if I've gotten it for free or not.

It depends why it’s horrible.
There are some books that I think are stupid and roll my eyes at, but I still finish them.
There are other books that just piss me off as I read them. Those books I stop.
Unless it’s a series and I know I’m close to the ending. Hunger Games third book was that way for me. First book disturbed me in the concept, but I appreciated the story. Second book was fine. By the third book when the animal things were chasing them, I was so pissed off at the weird story change that I was mad at myself the rest of the way through the book because I kept reading, but by that point I was 75% through the series and wasn’t going to let it beat me!
So, it depends. 😊

No
I’ve taken 2 high school tests and a college exam & a college essay on the ‘Grapes of Wrath’ but I haven’t read every page. I gave up both times I was required to read it. I started with good intentions, especially the second time but I couldn’t do it. I read the beggining & end & skimmed & moved on. There is only so much time I have in life I can’t see using it reading something I’m not enjoying if I don’t ‘need’ to read it.

Normally, yes, I usually will finish a book even though I don't like it. The exception was "The Lovely Bones" - I hated that book and about 1/2 way though, I thought "Why am I reading this?" and it did stop that one but normally I finish it.

There are only two that I haven't finished - those two were quite popular, but I just couldn't get into them.
One was Eat, Pray, Love. Hated it. The other was by an Asian author, I can't remember the name of it but it was a bestseller and other people loved it.

i'll also put down a book that i've started if i see that it has mostly bad reviews (unless I'm enjoying it of course), not going to waste my time!

I usually try to slog through if I’m still in the first third or so. If I’m more than half I will give up. I hate reading bad fiction and/or bad writing.

Nope, unless it’s fke book club I do not force myself to read something I don’t like. If I’m not into the book within 100 pages or so, I have no problem putting it down. I don’t do that very often, so the book has to be pretty bad for my to not finish. Often I will just start skimming until the end.

Not anymore. I do have one book on my Kindle that I keep going back to when I finish my books and can't download another until I get connected to wi-fi. I can't stand that book, I keep trying and it just drags and drags...

Its funny isn’t it that the bad ones stay with you as much as the great ones. Lol I’ve read hundreds & hundreds of books I can tell you my favorites and I can tell you what I hated but there’s hundreds in the middle I’m not sure I could recall.

I used to force myself but lately, no. I’ll stall out completely onreading so I would rather waste a bad book and move on than stall completely not reading anything because I feel obligated to finish the bad book. (Holy run on sentence bat girl).

No. Just like a movie I don’t like, I’ll stop. Funny, my coworkers and I were just talking about this the other day. One will finish it no matter how bad, and the other is like me, we’ll stop reading.

No. don't torture yourself thinking it might get better. Chances are it won't.
Move on till you find a book you enjoy all the way through.

I used to force myself to finish any book I started, but I no longer do this. I probably only have a handful of unfinished books in my life, and they do make me feel vaguely guilty. But not guilty enough to go back and finish them.

I used to, but I don't anymore. I am 60 years old and my want-to-read list has more books on it than I will ever get to. I will usually give a book 50 pages and if it doesn't grab me, I will quit. If a friend recommends it and I know we have similar reading tastes, I might give it a hundred pages before I make my decision.

I like this rule! I thought I was weird for feeling bad about not finishing a book. Turns out I'm totally normal (at least on this particular subject )

Nope. I get all of my books from the library and usually several at one time. If I don't like it or can't get in to it, I put it in the bag to go back and try the next one.

Absolutely not, especially now that it is so easy to find out how it ends. I used to at least skim so I could see how the book ended, but now I just do a quick google search. There are way too many books to read and reread to waste times on ones that are poorly written or just plain stupid (Twilight, I am looking at you and your stupid sparkly vampires.)

I used to try to struggle through figuring it would get better at some point. Now I quit them, life is just too short to be struggling through a book I don't like.

I will skip ahead and try picking it up there to see if it is any better. If it is, great. If not, & usually it isn’t, I’ll skip to the end to see how it finishes. There are very few books I’ve not read the ending of, but I like knowing the conclusion LOL! I will admit to plodding through books I’ve paid for more than free ones. It’s easier to give up on a freebie.
