I joined in July when we were traveling and our security camera picked up teens in our back yard. They had climbed a 6 foot fence to get into our yard. They happened to be there right after several cars were broken into (same night, about 20 minutes after the cars were broken into).
Mostly it's about lost pets or pets running loose, occasional road issues (like when a semi turned over and blocked one of the two exits from our neighborhood), requests for doctor or other recommendations, and the occasional snake, bobcat, or coyote sighting. Stuff for sale gets posted, as well as things people want to give away.
For the most part, people are polite and decent, but I have noticed a few "troll" types who enjoy being snarky and have to get the last word in on any post or comment that they think deserves to be ridiculed. For example, one homeowner complained about teens sneaking in to use her private pool when none of the owners were home. She was concerned about a potential lawsuit. The trolls came out of the woodwork for that one.
Thankfully, it's more helpful than drama filled. Most of the time, anyway.

Much to my surprise, the "lead" of a neighborhood has to verify the person actually lives in that neighborhood, or the person is denied membership in that neighborhood group.

I only ever post there to handslap someone who has annoyed me. The peas have trained me well.

I’m a member. Ours is pretty tame, our last hot thread was ‘sloths in traffic’ it was pretty funny. Got a little heated, but nothing like here!

Ours is pretty tame- the usual stuff. I posted a couple of months ago that I had scrapbooking supplies for sale and someone about 20-25 miles from me saw my post- not sure how that happened? Anyway she came and bought some things and then texted back and ask how much I wanted for EVERYTHING I had left. OMG- I practically have my own Michael's store after selling on ebay for years. I was elated! She's coming tomorrow to get all of it. Now I can finally have another bedroom back. So, Nextdoor has been good for me!

Ours is pretty tame. Requests for services, lost pets or the authorities posting for public help or input finding a suspect or having coffee with a cop dates.

I didn't run into that. I just entered my address and it assigned me to a neighborhood based on it. My neighborhood is dead. Hardly anyone posts in it so I include surrounding neighborhoods as well. It's full of break-ins, complaints about code compliance, and people who are convinced the city is stealing money from them.

How do you include other neighborhoods? I'm located right at the bottom right of my neighborhood, and I'd like to know what's going on with the other 3 sides as well! When you go to your feed, there should be a green "customize". If you click on that, it should bring up a map of your city and the neighborhood boundaries. You can choose which ones to view. I have 14 other neighborhoods in my city and have them all included.

I didn't run into that. I just entered my address and it assigned me to a neighborhood based on it. You probably didn't see it.
As a Lead--when someone asks to join/submits the information--the Lead for that neighborhood gets a message that says, __ at address___ has submitted to join. Verify that the person lives at this address. I then have to investigate the address. Then, if I click "verify" a message comes up that "I am verifying that __ lives in this neighborhood."
I can only presume that at some time there was a bro-haha about someone outside the neighborhood posting something.

I belong to Next Door. My dog got out when we first moved in and I located him through Next Door, so the site has been useful to me.
I don't post much on Next Door, but when I do, I try to follow the same rules I've made for myself on this site: I avoid political threads and I avoid unnecessary controversy. (However, I do like to lurk on the controversial threads-the dog poop threads and the teenagers playing ding dong ditch are always the most entertaining).

Ours is a lot of lost/found pets, teens looking for summer jobs and homeowners looking for contractors. On the 4th of July a bull mastiff bolted during the fireworks and still hadn't been found a month later - I need to get on and see if there is an update. The ones that make me shake my head are complaints about developments and trying to rally someone to organize a protest. All of these plans have been in the works for several years, we've had continuous opportunity for public input and when the projects are finally permitted and ready to start is not the time to try shut it down. One of my early favorites was a new to the neighborhood request to borrow everything needed for a day at the beach. A lot of neighbors were more generous than me, offering beach chairs, umbrellas, boogie boards, etc.

I am and there is all of the above. Plus, we have someone who posts their ramblings in a folksy way, and gets lots of high fives and kudos.

librarylady as a lead, when posts are reported, do you see who is reporting it? I don't think so. I am vague because right after I was made a lead, all the leads got a message saying this was reported, how do you vote--should it be removed or not? I do not recall knowing who made the complaint.
I have only had this "glorious title" for about 6 weeks and no other message has been reported as possible "not appropriate."
If it comes up again, I'll be sure to notice and report back.
One day this week a person (another lead) made a long rambling post calling out people who "reported all the time" and he/she was tired of her/his time being wasted voting on whether a post should be deleted or not. I found it odd because I have seen only one complaint.
It is relatively calm in our 'hood.

We had a post that I found very misleading. The title was "Urgent Help Needed for Neighbor" The message went on to say that the family had taken in a dog from a rescue group and she wanted bedding, toys and food for the dog.
I wanted to give her a hostile note saying, "Why did you take in a rescue dog if you were not able to provide the necessities?" ...and I did not consider that "urgent help needed"--but I just kept my fingers quiet because others were praising her for taking in a dog and rushing supplies over.
I still find the title inappropriate. IMO, urgent help would be if the family needed food/clothing/shelter.
I still find it odd to offer to provide pet rescue if you were not able to do it yourself.

I am fascinated by the sheer number of lost pets thanks to NextDoor. We do have car break ins in our neighborhood which leads to the question every time "did you leave valuables in your car/unlocked?" The answer is usually "well yes, but" and then lectures and than hand slaps about "victim shaming". Also, we live near the schools. So many posts about teenage drivers sigh

Yes, I am a member and no, my neighborhood postings are nothing like that. There was one guy who occasionally posted objectionable things; he was quickly put in his place by the group and I haven't seen anything in a while.

No and I cancelled my account for exactly that reason. The admin continually hand slapped me and would repost deleted posts that I decided I shouldn't post because it would stir the pot and I didn't care that much. He is a total asshole and I refuse to go back on that board.

We’ve had people on ours put up links to their go fund me for their dog’s expensive medical treatment that they can’t afford. I get it, I’m a pet owner and would be devastated if something happened to one of my dogs that required extensive medical treatment, but I couldn’t imagine ever asking my neighbors to pay for it.

We have coyotes, hawks, foxes and other wildlife that live around here so it makes zero sense to me why anyone would intentionally allow their indoor cats to roam outdoors where we live. And LOL about the unlocked cars, garages left with the doors open all day, etc. We get so many of those too. Well duh, if you leave stuff in your unlocked car or garage you shouldn’t be surprised if someone helps themself. Newsflash, bad people have cars and it’s pretty easy for them to get around. Even if you live in a nice quiet neighborhood, odds are pretty good that the bad people with cars will find your little slice of nirvana eventually!

Some of your ND's are so much tamer than ours. Mine still has a photo posted of someone that fit the description of a crime. The OP said it wasn't that person, yet the picture is still up. I reported it, but guess the leads didn't feel it warranted removing. We constantly have the coyote debates, the unlocked cars, the missing pets... which often leads back to the coyote debate.

Ha. ...a Lead in another neighborhood just posted this concern of her: A young man asked if he could use his metal detector on her lawn. She said no. Now the man was in her neighbor's yard and digging whatever he found--but repairing where he dug. Then she gave description of him and his car. Just to alert us.
In my mind I thought, "So??" She got a few replies that indicated others were not sounding an alarm over it. One guy told her she needed to lay off the weed as it was making her paranoid. hahahah
