Well, I received confirmation that Leads do know who is doing the reporting. Our Lead responded to my report by saying, "It was not established woman in photo is not the one. OP said she was not sure." Guess they'll leave the person's photo up.

Ours is mostly lost pets (uh, yeah, packs of coyotes freely roam our neighborhood day and night) and "does anybody know a plumber (housekeeper, handyman, on and on and on.)
It's mostly boring, but as people use it more, I've noticed that the civility has gone down a few notches.
There was a post about an obnoxious man who rides his bike around town a lot. Someone said that must be "B". "B" is a well known developmentally disabled man who also rides his bike all over, is someone I know, and is not the person they were describing. His poor mother had to respond for days to every poster, who did not thoroughly read the thread, "no that is not "B". That's the biggest drama we've had so far.
I just told my mother about it, so there goes the neighborhood. She once wrote a letter to all of her neighbors, furious that someone had cut all of her roses. Turned out some deer ate them. Oops. Can't wait to see what havoc she causes on Next Door. I get an earful daily, and she lives at the end of a quiet cul-de-sac.
That "Best of" is so funny!

I'm deleting mine as well - apparently we have a very odd Admin who deletes posts if she doesn't agree or like the topic. Just willy nilly, posts are gone.
Then other posts which vent about people living in houses or work that was done (which turned into a massive argument) are allowed to stay and run on forever.
I found out the site is only as good as the person running it - and ours apparently has huge issues.

I think that's the problem with my neighborhood, the Lead has very strong opinions and even people from other neighborhoods have commented on that. I suspected retaliation from the Lead when I had to verify my identity... can't use a shortened name... have to use your full name.... yet quite a few people in my neighborhood go by initials and made up/shortened names. Time to delete my account as well.

I was about to sign up for an account, but I chickened out at the last minute. Not sure I want my real name out there. That's why I used a phony name. I wish I could have used a fake name but they check the names of new people against those that own the houses. The main person in our neighborhood is a realtor and she has everyone’s info and pretty much is the one that invites everyone.

Yes, and my group is amazing. There is never a shortage of drama - saw 2 posts from my neighborhood on that best of ND twitter in the brief few minutes I looked at it I am so tempted to submit a few from mine.

I am a member of my neighborhood under a phony name. I also read the drama for laughs but I also get useful info from it. I don’t have my real name either but it is still linked to my address. Is there a way around that connection?

I would not be happy with someone who wanted to dictate who, at my address, wanted to join.

Someone just now posted on ours that they had found a dead chihuahua on their lawn, partially eaten by a coyote, AND POSTED A PHOTO. They did put "trigger warning" and "sorry for your loss", but the photo is right there. Holy cow!

Not on Next Door, but I follow Best of Next Door on Twitter - they showcase the most ridiculous Next Door posts. I had no idea this existed! lol Our next door page is a hot mess. But the verified kind of hot mess. The HOA treasurer will drive right over to make sure you are really you. No anon posting is allowed. Tonight there is our passive aggressive HOA president threatening legal action on all of us dirty sidewalk folk (pressure wash your sidewalk now!) and apparently changing the HOA rules to go straight to legal action vs. sending out written notices to mow grass, clean sidewalks, or trim a tree. She got a little push back so she went full Pea and doubled down on the threats to sue us all. She's a peach! We've seen her in her full HOA presidential glory before.. she will ramp up the threats and then her very strange husband will jump in to defend her & cuss at residents. Next she will post a random school "bus stop safety" or "how to control chinch bugs" post. lol There was the big Christmas light fight a few years ago.. someone still had lights up on January 11 or something like that and the neighbor freaked out. Literally cussing his neighbor on line and admitting to going over there to the door to tell them to take the lights down. He left multiple threatening notes on their door when they would not answer and went on Next door to tell everyone his neighbor was lazy. He even took photos/videos of himself in their yard complaining! HOA bunch jumped right in to bash the Christmas light loving home. lol They deleted any posts that supported the lighted homeowners... BUT turns out our HOA rules allow lights up for 30 days after the holiday!! So the president and treasurer were working overtime to shame a resident who did nothing wrong. There was push back about missing $30K and that a board member was being paid high rates to do things like change out seasonal banners and clean the guard shack (we don't have a guard so it is an empty building you drive past as you drive in and that they store Christmas decorations in). Things got so heated a year or so ago that the HOA pres. and treasurer left Nextdoor and made a private facebook group. The gave us all memos and reminders and door notices to join the fb group. I guess that didn't work so we get bare minimum updates of board meetings on next door. com and various flame up like tonight over issues that she will not let any dissent be heard. Pay your HOA dues now! lol

This post is timely - i wanted so bad to go off on one of my neighbors on ND today. Someone had posted their Nest video of a guy checking door handles down the street. Another guy posts, "I wonder if that's the guy who stole my gun out of my truck." This is the 2nd neighbor who has had a gun stolen out of his truck. Like how stupid and irresponsible must you be???!!!

Our next door page is a hot mess. But the verified kind of hot mess. The HOA treasurer will drive right over to make sure you are really you. No anon posting is allowed. I think you win the prize! Ours is bad, but no HOA stuff thankfully. We do seem to be getting more hand slaps lately... dog stolen from yard, well why was your dog left unattended... packages being stolen from porch, should have your packages delivered somewhere else... people painting your curbs and demanding money, hey house numbers painted on your curbs are necessary so pay the guy!

The more I see posted, the more I'm thinking of canceling my account. While some posts are great, I also see a lot of inappropriate posts. Addresses of "possible" offenders, photos of individuals that match someone's ID, hand slaps, etc. Sure they can be reported and deleted, but once it's out there, it's out there. Is your Nextdoor neighborhood like this? It went south in my neighborhood too. I never go there anymore because it makes me angry.

I wish I could have a fake name on Nextdoor. At least we don't have to display our actual house number, just the street. But I never post anything or respond to any posts.

You might be able to get away with it depending on the Lead. If they don't care to check, you are fine with a fake name. However, you do run the risk of being reported and if so they will suspend your account until you prove who you are and where you live.

I finally had to unsubscribe to the emails. For the most part ours has turned into nothing but Lost Pet, Found Pet, Rescue this Pet, Fosters for Pets needed. Mostly for dogs, sometimes a cat, though there was the escaped pot belly pig last Fall! Every single one of them brings out the hand slappers who chastise the owners for pets getting loose, the defensive owners who take offense to the hand slappers and then it devolves from there. When I go to the website now, 90% of what is showing are links to the local tv station who has partnered up with them.
The current war on there is over our coyote problem. We live in the middle of one of the nation's largest cities, which makes the coyote problem a bit surreal. There have been numerous pet cats and dogs killed, someone had a coyote jump on their fence top while they were in their pool, we've seen them trotting down the middle of our street at night. Yet we've got a large contingent who don't want them removed, don't want them killed vs those who have been effected by the coyotes. It's getting ugly on there.

Since this is still going, I thought I'd share something that popped up on my ND.
A neighbor a couple houses down from me posted about being robbed. Since she's on my street, I was concerned until I saw what was stolen. Her headlight from her PT cruiser. A headlight. From the actual car.
WTF?

It could be a popular item that needs replacing or a hard to find item. Lot of older cars here are stolen for the parts.

From the actual car. WTF? That's a common type theft around here. Parts for cars are expensive and can be sold. A few years ago DH had parked in our drive, but outside the gate. The next morning both of the exterior mirror housings were gone, the mirrors left dangling. The car was only 1.5 weeks old! Turns out another Mercedes in the neighborhood was vandalized as well. We immediately cleaned out the garage so the cars will fit inside and no longer park outside the gate.

That was my first NextDoor handslap. Some woman who was screeching about getting rid of the coyotes. This isn't a big city, it's a small town on the edge of the Bay Area, surrounded by water, open space, and farmland. The coyotes belong. My sister lost a cat (presumably) to a coyote, and a dog got bitten by one when she strayed too close to the coyote babies out in the open space. They do keep a closer eye on the dogs out there now.

"it ate my dog" "quit putting food out for them" "we saw some walking down the street when we were walking out one night" "can't someone relocate them?" it goes on and on.... you are right, we are in their territory. they have to feed and constant development is encroaching on their feeding grounds. as such, we keep our dogs inside once the sun sets. no unsupervised pee breaks after that. we've learned to co-exist.

Ah yes, the coyote debates! Those go on and on. We live near a preserve, yes, there will be coyotes! One lady wants the city to come up with a way to get rid of them.

My Next Door is basically people asking about lost pets and for recomendations for home repair and improvement. No drama really since they caught the kid stealing cars in our neighborhood.

I’m amazed by how often tortoises come up missing in my neighborhood. And all the folks who want to adopt tortoises.
