If you work in a small office at a desk job with a small parking lot (so parking at the end of the lot still is close) and don’t own a dog you take for walks twice a day, how do you get your steps in?
I’m finding even with taking a 2 mile or so walk after work I’m still hitting barely half of that goal.

I do a small walk in the morning (1 mile) then another small walk in the afternoon (1 mile) and then ideally a longer walk in the evening (2-3 miles). On the weekends, instead I do one longer walk/hike/jog -- anywhere from 5-8 miles.
Doing this easily gives me 10-15,000 steps. Sometimes I skip the evening walk, and then if I only do the morning and afternoon walk I get about 6,000 steps in.
To get 10,000 steps in, you need to add in another walk, either in the morning or at lunch.

Since I’m just starting out, I think my body would hate me. I’d have to do probably 4-5 miles, and 2 - 2.5 is what I’m doing now and I’m feeling it the next day. I think it’s just a matter of working my way up, but I’m pushing some days to hit 5,000.

It’s pretty hard for me to find the time. We went to the state fair one day last week and walked around from about 10:30-4:00 and really didn’t stop much or for very long, and even that day I only made it to 7600 steps. And that was walking all day long.

I work in a small office. I get up every so often and do a loop around the cubicles, go outside, walk through the parking lot. Maybe five minutes total, but it is something.

I have dogs to walk and a job that keeps me moving, but during the summer when I wasn’t working, I took a longer walk each morning, (I can get 5000 steps with a little over 2 miles), parked as far away as possible any time I went to the store, got up and did laps around the house, swept and vacuumed, etc. house cleaning gets you steps AND active minutes if you move quickly. I didn’t always get there, but I usually got close.

No one will like my answer probably, but it works for me. I started the 10K plan 18 months ago and I have never missed a single day of making 10K in all that time--not one day! But I am absolutely committed. Actually, I generally (about 95 percent of the time) get 16,000 steps or more. 16K is my goal, but there are the occasional days when I only get a bit more than the 10K. What I do is when midnight hits, I put on my headphones and click on to the book I am listening to. Then I head out to our driveway. DH has set up a system of motion lights at the top where I simply circle over and over again. I get about 120 steps per circle. I walk slightly over an hour until I get 8K steps. It is boring--deadly boring. And some nights I think I can't do it. But I remember how fantastic my blood work is now and how thrilled my doctor is with me and I just keep going. On nights that it is raining too hard to go out, I have a circle path set up in the house. That nets me only about 60 steps per circle and that one really does seem forever. But really, either way I'm done in a little more than an hour. The next day I walk through my neighborhood getting another 3K. At night I get 1K walking the dog. The rest I just get naturally (although sometimes I do have to go out and circle the driveway for the last 1K or so). I used to be a couch potato and sometimes I think longingly of those days . But I like the new, much healthier me so much better. And I have so much more energy! YOU CAN DO IT!!!

I work a desk job, too. I get up in the morning and hit the treadmill for 30 minutes. I walk around the block at lunchtime. AND I have my Fitbit alert me if I haven't taken 250 steps in an hour. If I get that buzz on my wrist, I get up and walk around or even walk in place, until I hit that mark.
Generally, by bedtime, I am at 10,000 or a little over that.

I walk about 3 miles on the treadmill while watching TV first thing in the morning. This gives me over 8000 steps right away. Then I walk 1000 steps per hour til I reach 15000. This takes a lot of time, but I am retired!

But I like the new, much healthier me so much better. And I have so much more energy! YOU CAN DO IT!!! My story is similar as I was diagnosed with type 2 diabetes last November. That got me up from my chair and into a routine really quickly! I average 12,000+ steps a day. My highest was over 16,000. I walk for 45 minutes first thing in the morning, that starts me with about 3500 steps. Anytime I am in line whether at the deli counter, the check-out line, etc. I am marching in place. I get *looks* but don't give a crap. I go to the gym every other day so I get steps there. I take a long walk after dinner. During the winter I use the treadmill in the garage and watch DVDs on an old TV. It also helps to do challenges. A group of millennial friends of DS challenge me and 4/5 times I beat them! It's a great motivator. Can you walk at lunch?

I am lucky since I work several blocks from where I park and our office is large. I have my Fitbit set to buzz every hour to remind me to get up and walk 250 steps. Usually I can do more than that just taking a quick spin around the office. Sometimes I do the elliptical which gets me more steps. And I've been known to walk in circles around my house to get to 10k! Best of luck to you!
Can you walk on your lunch hour? At a park or mall maybe?

If you don't have a fitness watch, get one. Set reminders to get up and walk every hour. That will help keep you moving.

On a good day I make an effort all day long to take the stairs, get up and walk hourly at work, walk around the building when I arrive and before I leave and then take a 1-2 mile walk with DH after dinner to hit goal.
On a bad day I’ll get home with 3,000 steps logged and then walk an hour to hit goal before bed.

I typically average about 7K a day without the treadmill, running about in the house, garden, work etc. Consciously try not to sit much but at work that isn't always possible A 45 min show gets me about 3-4K steps. If I have had an inactive day, I might watch 2 shows to get my 10K steps. The key for me is finding a show I love, that i want to watch. I don't mind walking then.

I try to walk 3 miles every day. (I've been under the weather a lot this summer so that goal hasn't happened that often.) I also walk when I'm on the phone (around the house or up and down the porch) which probably nets 1500-2000 steps a day.

I'm a fair-weather walker of doggies....so winter is a challenge for me. But I also find a show or podcast to get at least half of my 10K done on the treadmill. The other half I can usually get just being busy around the house...

I walk to and from work every day. On the days it isn’t possible because I drive for whatever reason I take the stairs at work and make sure to get up at least once an hour to do a lap. I’m also not above taking laps inside my house if I have to. I also make sure I wear my Apple Watch when I run errands, walking around Target gets you more steps than you’d think.

Thanks for all the answers.
I’m just starting this journey, so it’s an adjustment. It’s just discouraging to feel like I’m moving so much more than I used to and still missing that 10,000 by several thousand. But, as I do more I’ll be able to go further. 😊

And I lost it without changing my diet at all. However, I seem to have gone as far as I can with just the walking. I've plateaued at my current weight since January (a pound down, a pound up) and I'm a bit annoyed . But I probably need to adjust the eating a bit too. I would really like to be down about 10 pounds so I'll either have to up the walking or down the food.

I thought of a few other tips: I wear my Fitbit every waking moment except to sleep and shower. I wear it on my tennis shoe most of the time, especially during meal prep/cleanup. I get probably 1500+ steps fixing dinner and cleaning up. When I go to the grocery store or other shopping, I park as far away from the store as possible. After unloading, I take my cart back to the furthest cart carousel. I walk FAST! (It started in college when I had classes on opposite ends of the quad.) I have to slow it down when DH walks with me after dinner.

One thing I have noticed, especially at work, if I carry something I carry it in my left hand which is where I wear my FitBit. So it doesn’t always count all of those steps. I also text and walk a lot, again, it doesn’t count all the steps. Some, but not all. I have been more conscious about that.

I walk 3-5 miles on the treadmill almost every single day so I have no problem getting my steps in. I read for pleasure on the treadmill, so I always look forward to my time on the treadmill. I even use the treadmill when we are on vacation.

I don't work so it's easier. I spend 2 hours at the gym - 1 hour on the elliptical followed by 1 hour of step aerobics, Zumba, or high fitness. I get 10,000 steps by 10:00am. On the weekends I usually don't hit it. Today we did some errands and cleaning and I'm at 8,000. I might make it to 10,000 by bedtime, but doubtful.
