Such tragedy in one thread My answer is maybe..... almost 8 years ago a classmate of ds (then 9) disappeared on Thanksgiving along with his 2 younger brothers. The dad is currently in prison charged with custodial interference and insists that he gave the boys to some underground group to keep them safe from their mother (who by all accounts wasn't a danger to them, but they were in the midst of a nasty divorce) but they're thought to be dead The dad was just weird, he was a cub scout leader when ds joined .....the only time ds ever asked to quit something and we let him (typically we'd make him finish the year/season), I couldn't put my finger on it on at the time my gut just told me the guy was off and so we let ds quit.....never been so happy to have listened to my gut in my life, that was a year or so before the disappearance. I think I know this story. So sad. So many unanswered questions.

My husband interviewed haq, the person who shot up the Jewish center in Seattle. He and his staff decided that haq was not a good fit. For years my husband has felt guilty about not hiring him.

Cousins by marriage were murdered by Manson. Does your family go to hearings to keep the two women in prison? No we don't

We had a student at our school who moved to a neighboring town and disappeared a couple years later, when she was eleven. She would be in her 30s now, if alive, but she has never been found and there are still vigils and now billboards asking people with information to share it. It's assumed by everyone that she is dead and even suspicions about who did it, but he is dead now and anyone who might know for sure isn't talking - yet.

What do you mean by “suicide by cop”? A person creates a situation where he know a LEO will have choice but to shoot. exactly. It was the thing around here for a while (early 90s)

I am so sorry for all of you who have lost a family member through murder. Especially those of you who lost parents. I can't imagine.

You have always been a part of the heist. You're only mad now because you don't like your cut.

Yes. My high school best friend's stepfather. He was not a good person and he was an addict. He disappeared and a year later his bones were found in a suitcase in an empty lot not far from where he lived.

Yes. My son's best friend, Sebastian, was killed by his step-father. Sebastian was 8 when he was murdered. The step-father shot and killed the mom and the mom's sister then burned the house down; Sebastian was hiding in the house and burned to death. I am scrapbooking photos from a field trip from my son's second grade year and I can see Sebastian's smiling face right next to my son and it breaks my heart. He was a delightful little boy and didn't deserve what happened to him. The step-father is presumed dead but authorities have never recovered his body. His boat was found circling about seven miles from shore, in the Atlantic Ocean, with blood in the boat but he was never found.

No, but I know two people in prison for attempted murder; separate incidents.
It's interesting to see it from the other side. You can't say it would never happen in your family or someone you think you know could do something so horrific.

Yes. One of the doctors (a psychiatrist) my mother worked for was murdered by the patient he was seeing, while she was working for him in his office. He was a lovely man, so tragic.

These stories are so heartbreaking. A horrible man who set out to kill his wive's friends after a fight with her, killed my aunt then moved on to the next home and shot up all the windows but did not kill the second lady. He was later apprehended on his way to his next victim..... tears.. many years have gone by but it still upsets me.

1975, I was 6. My aunt owned a small mom and pop store. Two guys came in to rob her, she opened the floor safe, and they saw a play gun my little cousin had (he was about 6) with his other toys, and they point blank shot her. They were caught and prosecuted.
Working in law enforcement, our county lost 4 officers/deputies within 2 yrs. I was very good friends w/one officers wife. It was awful. Then this yr one of my best friends, and her partner were killed when an inmate got the partner’s gun. Devastating for all.

Just about that time there were a rash of drive by shootings, the most horrible one( to me), a young girl was shot at a gas station. It was a gang initiation shooting. After that shooting we would not let son play with any type of play gun. We were always so afraid that some gang members would catch a glimpse of a the shiny metal and shoot in that direction.

Yes. All cops, which is a devastating part of being in the LEO community, unfortunately.

This is really an unbelievable thread that there are so many people that have known someone.
Unfortunately another to add--
One of my best friends all through school--her cousin was murdered while in college in the early 1970's. She had put a note up at the school looking to share a ride home for the holidays. Some guy answered the ad and murdered her. I think it took a long time to find her body and of course her parents were devastated.
