--actually known the person, not just someone in your community? I have known 3.
1. I was in about 5th grade and the family on our school bus route had 3 sons. #3 son was in my class. #2 son shot #1 son one Sunday afternoon when parents were away from home. Needless to say, traumatic for the entire community. It was ruled accident and no punishment other than living the rest of your life knowing you caused your brother's death.
2. I was in elementary school. We lived outside of Houston. People from the city often stopped and wanted to buy eggs or milk. We had some regular customers. One was a M/Mrs M who came on Sunday afternoons and purchased both eggs and milk. I don't think it was every Sunday, but very often. One day my father brought in the newspaper and there was Mrs. M's photo on the front page. She worked in a liquor store and had been murdered. Her assailant was never caught. Turns out they were not married, but Mr. M was her boyfriend. My mother always suspected that Mr. M had done it. I don't remember the details but they had an argument in front of my mother and that was why my mother always thought he had killed her.
3. Our receptionist at work was murdered by her former BIL. It was a murder for insurance money scheme. The 2 guilty persons were found and sentenced to 20 years in prison.

Yes. It's a big reason we didn't want to move back to Memphis when DH retired.

Yes, just this year. One of my colleagues was shot by the ex-wife of her new boyfriend. Very upsetting.

My grandmother was murdered when I was a little girl. Raped and murdered. Who does that to a sweet old defenseless lady? My dad and his brothers were devastated. They felt they should have moved her in with one of the families so she wasn’t living alone after Grandpa died. Grandma had photos of all the kids and grands on her dresser and the killer lay them all face down as if he didn’t want us watching what he was doing to my grandma. She was a very tiny lady, barely 5’ tall and very slight build. She was in her 80s when she died. I heard they suspected the gardner’s son, but he fled to Mexico and no one was ever charged.

In high school, I had a friend shoot and kill a mutual friend. Then the shooter took off and got into a shootout with the police. He was the first suicide by cop in my city.
I knew another murderer, but no more victims.

My sister’s ex-boyfriend was murdered by his roommate a few years after high school graduation back in the 80’s. Phil had practically lived at our house.
My DD’s best friend’s MIL was murdered by her crazy soon to be ex-husband. After leaving court-ordered mediation, he pulled up behind her car at a red light, got out, and shot her in the face.

I’ve known two murderers. One, a classmate friend killed his step father. Well deserved from the abuse stories I heard from him. The other, a family member killed a neighbor over a long-standing disagreement. Sad situation that should not have escalated to that point.

I can't believe it, but yes, I've known two.
1. I'm not sure if I met her before her murder. I think I did once. She was supposedly murdered by a Mexican mafioso in the LA area. Her husband was good friends with my first husband and they had a very young little boy.
2. The brother of good friends of my first husband and I was killed by his roommate. I didn't know the guy well, but I'd seen him at parties. I specifically remember him flirting with me. It didn't happen until many years after I knew the family.
My son-in-law has murder in his family, I believe. Grandparents maybe?
I can't believe I know anyone who was murdered, even if I didn't know them well.

Yes. I knew her, but was not close friends with her. We worked at the same place.
She and her husband went missing and later it was determine that they were killed by a known serial killer. The scary part it that they only lived a few streets/blocks away from me.
Somewhere I read that he just randomly picked their house. It was stated that he set out across the country intent on kidnapping and murdering someone and picked them because the layout of their house lent itself to an invasion.
It is so weird because we are in an area where you never think something like that would happen and what are the chances of him just randomly picking our town and that area of town.
I still think about her, it was an awful time when they were missing and no one knew what what happened. She had worked here for many years and never just would not have shown up. It was the same with her husband at his place of employment.

Yes. My step-grandfather was murdered in a store robbery. I was in my early 20's, almost 40 years ago, and it was the first tragedy in our family. They did catch the killers but they were back out on the streets in under 7 years.

When I was in grad school I shared equipment with a girl who ended up being murdered by her boyfriend. I didn't know her well but every time I reserved time on the machine i would see her signature and it would make me so sad. My sister had a student who was later murdered by her stepfather. She was missing for months before he finally confessed and led police to her remains. So sad. Lexica I'm sorry for what your grandmother and your family went through.

Sort of-- when I was 6-8 yo, there was a boy in our church and school that was abducted and murdered. I think it was a few days before he was found. I think my sisters were friends with the boy's older sisters. That was back in the early-mid 70's when we walked to and from school every day, to the library, the five and dime, etc.

My son played soccer with a boy all through school. We would sit with the other parents at games. I often talked to the boys mother. His father would come to some of the games but not all of them. When the boy was in High School he killed his father.

My husband's cousin killed his own brother and then himself in their grandmother's house about 10 years ago.

My uncle was murdered in Hong Kong. He was in the Navy and was there for a couple of days before he was supposed to come home for Christmas. He was robbed and murdered in his hotel room. I was little when it happened.
We don’t know for sure, but we believe my cousin was murdered almost 22 years ago. She was 12 years old and 9 months pregnant. My aunt had passed away three years earlier and she was sent to live with her deadbeat father, even though members of my extended family fought for custody. We think she may have been killed to cover up the baby’s paternity. Her father and that side of her family were uncooperative with police as was the “church” (cult) that controlled every part of her life. She’s still considered missing, but I don’t think she’s with us anymore.

A classmate from high school. I didn't know her well, but she was popular and kind. She and her husband and kids had moved to South America for his work I think. Someone killed both she and her husband. I didn't find out about this til years later.
I also knew a murderer. He lived on my street and went to my school and church. Fir several years his dad visited with us monthly when I was growing up. The son had some sort of mental problems, received treatment and was released and I'm not sure he ever served time or not. I always have felt so sad for his dad having to deal with it all.

Yes. 3. 1. It was about 1990-91 and a lady owned an alterations store next to a store where I worked. I went in one day to have her do some drapes for me and the other lady in there said “oh, she can’t do it” and I was like, well maybe if I talked to her, she’d have time or whatever. I was kind of persistent and she said she’s dead. Apparently, her husband killed her. Murder/suicide. 2. My cousin in 2010. I did not know him very well. And I hadn’t seen him since he was little (he was about 28). He was selling drugs (pills) and told his gf that he’d be right back that we was going to collect money from someone and they stabbed him. His brother went looking for him when he didn’t come home and found him dead in his truck. I know they caught the guy but I don’t know if or what his sentence was. 3. Some girls I used to scrapbook with had a mutual friend (I met her once or twice). She was in the process of getting a divorce and her exdh shot in the stomach in front of their kids and she died. It’s disgusting how many of us know someone. And Lexica I’m sorry for your grandma. That’s so sad. Hugs.

An ex boyfriend tried to murder his neighbor for mowing the lawn too much.
My husband’s cousin murdered her brother when their were 4 and 5. She closed him in a dryer and turned it on. Their parents were in bed drunk.
Trying to kill your sibling is uncommon. A gal I know wrapped a seatbelt around her sister’s neck and choked her until she almost passed out. Her dad barely got the car pulled over. It took him and another guy to pull her off her sister. My neighbor’s daughter tried to punch her baby brother to death. The girl also tried to drown my daughter. I could go on...I know three others who tried to kill their sibling.

I worked a maternity leave for a coworker back in the early 90s. We worked together for a year after she returned and then I moved back to my home province. A couple of years ago I Googled her name out of curiosity and found out she had been murdered by her husband. Although we weren’t close outside of work it was very shocking to discover.

Thankfully, no. I don't think I could live with that kind of pain if it were someone especially close to me.
ETA: I did know someone who killed someone and was charged with manslaughter. He got into a fight with this guy while playing pool at some place. He used the pool stick to defend himself and knocked the guy out. Then he got scared that the guy would kill him when he came to so he struck him again and that killed him. My friend was young when it happened and he never told me how long he was in jail. It couldn't have been very long because he was still in his early to mid 20's when we meet. He was the nicest guy. Hard to believe he killed someone.

Yes. I had a co worker killed by her husband, in front of their 3 children. He then drove the children to his family's home, and shot himself in front of his children and his family.
As a 911 dispatcher I have heard 3 homicides. I did not "know" them...but it still is not easy to listen to.

Yes, my neighbor directly across the street was murdered in her bed next to her husband (the gunman hit him over the head with his rifle, but didn’t shoot him for some reason). It was very early morning and I was actually awake nursing my baby at the time it happened. We didn’t know anything had happened until a couple hours later when my husband woke up and saw all the police cars at their house. It was a random murder, the second of two random murders in two weeks in my small city that summer. They caught the (serial) killer later the same day, thankfully
