It wouldn't make me too nervous because it would be in my purse and I have never had it snatched. No one can tell unless you act strange.

I'm lucky if I have a twenty on me. I rarely pay in cash.
However my dd started driving and wanting to go do things on her own and we're in this in between stage of teenage cash/debit. She asks for money and I never have cash! She's getting tired of hearing, "Uh, I have $5." or "Go check under the floormats of the car."

Japan is/was a cash based economy and my ex-husband used to freak out if I did’t carry at least ¥20,000 on me at all times. That was about $200. He would have preferred more like ¥50,000 in the case of an emergency. In Canada I carry maybe $10 and that is weird for me. I use debit or credit 99%of the time.

I like cash. I use it often. I got an eyeball from the bank teller yesterday when I made a withdrawal. I don't cary it all on me at once though. I'm going to Vegas in a week or so and will do all transactions in cash.

I do not carry more than 20 dollars. If for some reason I have more than 20 dollars (ie, someone has paid me back for something) my next stop is the bank lol. In addition to the 20 dollars I have in my wallet, I have a 20 dollar bill in my car's center console...its for emergencies or convenience. I also have a small change jar in my vehicle and carry 2 dollars in quarters. I use my debit card for almost everything. I only frequent one place w/ a 10 dollar minimum is the water store, and I have my quarters for that My dad carries a ton of cash. He believes he is safer that way. He is very stubborn and will not listen to any reason. I worry about him.

Just because you have not been a victim previously does not mean you will not be a victim in the future. That is super flawed thinking. People who are robbed do not typically know they are going to be robbed that day. Desperate people do desperate things. You do not have to be doing anything wrong/strange to become a victim. I do not mean any disrespect to you and say this to you with the best of intentions.

For those who answered they'd use their debit/credit card to pay for small purchases, I am thinking that some places you have to have a minimum of $10 before you can use a card. Reason is because they have to pay for each transaction, no matter the amount. So a $0.95 pack of gum may cost them $1.00 to use the credit card machine. So they are out $0.05. I'm not sure of the exact amount, so don't quote me on that. Large places like Walmart probably don't care, but small mom & pop places...it's their lively hood. Maybe some places don't have to pay a fee for each transaction. I worked at a small convenience store before, and I know the owner had to pay per transaction. It’s actually not allowed for a business to require a minimum purchase to use a credit card, and if the card issuer finds out, they can revoke their ability to accept those cards. Having said that, what you posted is absolutely true: small purchases end up costing the business more than they make. Personally, I won’t ever charge less than $10. I appreciate small businesses, and I don’t want to do anything that might contribute to their demise.

No...I don't work in the safest of neighborhoods, so I have gotten used to carrying very little cash.

I rarely even have $5 on me so these responses are interesting. Keep them coming! The payment I referenced in my original post was registration and moving fees for a house boat the same person just purchased. It makes me wonder if they did the entire $100,000+ transaction in cash.😶 What do you do if you want to buy a pack of gum? Use a card? What about something like valet parking? I never carry cash. I use a card. If you’re using a card what difference does it make if the charge is $1 or $100? It makes literally no difference to the card holder. If I’m going to valet I have to know in advance and make a special effort to go get cash. It’s such a PITA that I just usually don’t do it.

And it’s usually against their terms of services with the card carrier. If they have a minimum I just don’t shop there.

I always have $50-100 stashed in my wallet for emergencies. I don't even think about it being there. I might have anywhere from $1 - $150 in the regular part of my wallet, a little more if I am going away or going out for an occasion.

Some of it is unavoidable, but most of it happens in places that I would normally spend cash, so I feel like I avoid some of those threats by using cash. I have spent hours on the phone with credit card companies dealing with fraud.

I have had my account drained overnight after using my debit card at a restaurant and it is a horrible thing to have happen, for sure. I personally have never been robbed. I have had my debit card info stolen by an employee at a restaurant. But what changes my judgment on these matters is that as a 911 dispatcher I have never taken a call from someone stabbed for their debit card. Cash...often. I think our life experiences dictate how we chose what is best for us.

Never known anyone to have been stabbed for money, but there are certain cities where I will carry a small amount in my wallet and a bigger amount somewhere else to be safe. I also tend to gravitate towards safe areas and am that person who locks her doors before she gets into her car, won't remove a flyer or note from my windshield in the parking lot, and if the windows are halfway down, my purse is on the floor or seat belted beside me. I worked at a mall for years and we had parking lot safety tips every year.

I pretty much never have cash on me these days. I’m lucky if I can pay cash for Starbucks! It’s just so easy to tap my debit card for everything.
This summer we had the outside of our house painted, and I told our painter that I’d pay him in cash. I had to go to the bank and withdraw $6500, which made me pretty darn uncomfortable! I was happy to hand it off to him and be rid of it!

I carry cash, anywhere from $2-200 depending on the day. I don’t like to use a card at places where they’re going to add a tip line for my counter service food that I wouldn’t normally tip. Yes, I can cross out that line but I don’t want them spitting in my food 😊 I also like the flexibility of using cash if I don’t want to wait for the credit card transaction...I’d rather throw two twenties on the table and leave than wait for the server to come back.
Plus, having owned a small business I just can’t avoid thinking of the fees they incur and try to be generous when I can by paying cash.

When we built our house, I bought the appliances with cash. I think it was split into 2 payments, but their eyes got really big when I showed up with that much cash 😳. I went straight there from the bank, so I wasn’t too worried about anything happening.

I can't remember the last time I made a really small purchase like just a single pack of gum. Those are the kinds of things I buy at the time I buy groceries and keep in my purse or desk. A single candy bar would be an impulse purchase from a vending machine IF I have coins or one dollar bills. If I don't have coins or bills I skip the impulse.
I wonder if this is a big reason for coffee places to price their drinks so they can make a profit if the majority of their customers use a card?

I carry cash. Sometimes it's just easier. We were in London in June when the VISA swipe system went down everywhere. You couldn't do anything if you didn't have a chip card or cash. We had a chip card because that's what Americans have, so we didn't have a problem buying dinner. But the news was full of stories of people who had gone out for dinner or drinks on Friday night, then couldn't pay at the end of the night because they had one payment source and no one could access it. It was pretty disruptive for business that night. And yes, that's a rare occurrence, but it's a good reason to consider having a payment form that will always work on you.

If I need to make a small purchase like a bottle of water or something I'll look for change in my purse. If I don't have enough then I'll go without. Sometimes I'll use my card but then I usually just go ahead and buy anything else I need at the same time. I have never used a valet.

Our housekeeper liked getting paid in cash but then offered to take Paypal instead. I jumped on it! I'm sure our babysitter would prefer cash, but it is so much easier if I just write her a check. In my daily life the only time I feel like I "need" cash is when I get eggs from our neighbor, I pay him in cash. Other than that the farmers market - most take credit cards and the flea market are the only other places I can think of that i might need it.
Of course, I always forget to get some before we go on vacation and then I don't have any to tip the bell hops. So I have started putting a reminder in my calendar to pick up cash before we go for that.

I rarely have any cash at all. But because I use my credit card for everything. It gets me airline miles, so I’m having my money work for me. But carrying cash doesn’t phase me at all. I’m not waving it around, so no one knows I have it when I do. I used to carry it, and have no issues stopping for work and getting cash when we need it. I have no problem using my card at a gas station for only a couple bucks...that’s just more points on my miles If I’m going somewhere that I know I’ll need cash, I stop at the atm. Like a high school game, or similar.
