I like to have $100 on hand, in 5 20's. If something happened with my card (has before where bank has a hold on all accounts due to fraud), I know I have enough for a tow (aaa plus but again only so much tow), groceries, gas, medical co pay and meds, etc. Even a cheap battery for the van. To me I can do something in an emergency pinch with $100

I use my credit card for everything. I only carry around cash if I return something and I get cash back or someone pays me back for something with cash. I do try and keep some cash at home if the kids need it for the movies or school. Jen

I generally walk around with $200-$300 in cash. Just do. I'm a lot more aware of my spending when I'm handing over actual money rather than a card.
Thousands would make me nervous.

I get $100 at a time from the ATM. When I get down to about $20 I will get another $100. I have a folded bill with my driver's license as emergency funds.
I use my debit card for groceries and some restauarant meals, and other store purchases. I pay my hairdresser with my debit card.
I use a credit card for gas so I can pay at the pump. I used to always use cash for gas but stopped when most stations went to prepay inside for cash.
I like cash for tipping, for small purchases (but I don't buy coffee or sodas or gum), for occasional valet parking, for donations, for paying my share of a joint bill, for taxis when away from home, etc.
If we go on a trip, we will get probably an extra $300 in cash and split it between us.

On a day to day basis, I generally have $100 or under, unless I am planning to spend more. I tend to keep the majority of my money in the built in zippered pocket inside my purse. I move what I think I might use to a more accessible spot, while I am in my car, prior to entering a place(like the store).
My purse is with me at all times. It never leaves my sight. In public, it's either up on my shoulder or if in a cart...the strap twisted with my hand through it.
When I was on vacation this summer, I had several hundred on me, in the inside zippered pocket. I kept a couple $20's and/or smaller bills in a more accessible spot. I was using a crossbody purse and when I walked my hand was on the purse.
The only time I had a larger sum, was when I was purchasing a used car and the seller wanted cash. A mechanically inclined guy friend went with me (he looked the car over for me). It was evening and the bank was closed, so the seller agreed to hold the car for me until 30 minutes past the bank opening in the morning. I was at the bank when they opened, got the cash, and my friend and I went straight to the sellers home. I handed over the cash and received the title and a receipt.

I have noticed that when I pay with cash (at Target, at the grocery store) I am much more aware of my purchases. I question if I really need something. It makes me more accountble to keep track of my total si ce I have x amount on me than to just willie nillie swipe my card.

Years ago I had about $1500 cash to deposit in the bank. I had my deposit in my hand while waiting in line when the bank was robbed. As soon as I saw what was happening I slipped the cash in my purse and luckily didn’t lose it. The guy was eventually caught and took a plea bargain agreement so I didn’t have to testify.

I try to keep at least $20-40 on me. I never know when one of my sons will ask me for a few dollars for school or band. DH carries very little cash, if any. I will carry $50-60 during band season.

The largest amount of money that I have ever carried on me was about 35 million....... Vietnamese Dong! Which is only about $2000+ AUD. Even so, I kept checking the money every few minutes until I was on the plane. It's nerve racking carrying anything more than a few hundred. I can't imagine carrying over 7 grand!

Is $3.40 considered a lot of money? If so, then yes. 😂😂😂
Seriously, though, I carry very little money with me on any given day. Enough to get lunch or a coffee if I need it, but that’s about all.

Damn AussieMeg, 35 million dongs??? That was quite a trip. I pretty much always have cash these days because that's how my son pays me for his car insurance. I keep a $100.00 bill folded and tucked in one of the pockets of my wallet and a $20 bill in the console of my car, in case of emergency. I've also had a $50 bill for about 2 years in my wallet. I know once I break it, it's gone, so I just haven't. When I look to see how much cash I have, I don't count it. I also notice that I'm much more aware of what I'm spending when I use cash. Seeing it physically dwindle down really shows me how much the little things add up. Of course, when I feel like my cash is getting low, but I still want something, I just use my card instead.

No, not usually. We live overseas but own a home in the USA. This summer I had my US house painted while we were there visiting but forgot to bring my checkbook back with me so I had to pay the painter thousands of dollars in cash. It took me several days of maxing out my ATM withdraw limit to get all the cash I needed. I was scared to death having that much cash in my house. I would never carry around thousands in my purse.

I carry more cash when I'm in Europe than when I'm in the U.S. but it's still well under $1000!

LOL What denominations do you carry. I find $100s are hard bills to use because of fear of counterfeiting. But $5000 would mean carrying 100 $50 bills or 500 $20 bills. How do you fit those in your wallet?

saw an older man on the subway counting out at least 4 grand in 100 dollar bills on the subway in north toronto a couple of weeks ago.
subway was not very busy, off hours, and another woman and i met eyes and kinda looked at each other surprised. i remember thinking... he is lucky it his just her and i that watched this or someone might be following that man out of the subway station and help themselves to that cash. he didn't even look around to see if anyone was watching him.
he put about half in his wallet in his pocket and the other stack o' bills he folded in half and put it in his left breast pocket of his shirt.
no casinos or horse racing nearby... which is what i kind wondered as he was not particularly well-dressed, almost dishevelled and probably in his late 60s.

Temporarily. I paid $15,482 in cash for dh's car earlier this year. It nauseated me until I put it in their hands.

I try to keep a $20 bill in my wallet, but I'll end up spending it and forget to replace it. I usually use my debit card 99.9% of the time.

This thread reminded me of something that happened to me in the early 80s. I worked for the ferry system and we had a group of regulars that would come to the island for the track. Twice a week, heading home, they would arrive at the terminal at the last minute, throw $4 at the ticket agent and make a mad dash for the last ferry off the island. One night, seconds after the ferry left, I was cashing out and realized one of my $2 bills didn't look like the others. One dude had given me a $2 and a $1000 bill for his $4 fare.

DH always has about $300 cash on him even tho we put almost everything on cc and pay off each month earning cash back. He does this because years ago he had taken some clients out to lunch at a small local restaurant. After lunch, he found out they didn’t take cc! Thank goodness he had cash on him. Says he never wants to be stuck like that without.

Our housekeeper liked getting paid in cash but then offered to take Paypal instead. I jumped on it! I'm sure our babysitter would prefer cash, but it is so much easier if I just write her a check. In my daily life the only time I feel like I "need" cash is when I get eggs from our neighbor, I pay him in cash. Other than that the farmers market - most take credit cards and the flea market are the only other places I can think of that i might need it. Of course, I always forget to get some before we go on vacation and then I don't have any to tip the bell hops. So I have started putting a reminder in my calendar to pick up cash before we go for that. You write your BABYSITTER a check? That is kind of awful. How old is she? Does she even have a bank account? When I was old enough to babysit, no way did I have a bank account to deposit a check or any idea how to cash a check at a bank.

No I don't. If I saw a cash payment that large, I'd wonder what they were hiding.

Almost never. Unless I am on my way to buy something from Craigslist that requires cash. I did have $2,000 in my purse last week just long enough to drive to the bank to deposit it. Any other time, the only money in my purse usually jingles in my little sock change purse. I usually keep a bit of cash at home for emergencies, but I don’t carry it in my purse.
My ex used to carry a few thousand in hundreds in a roll in his pocket. It made me uncomfortable. Especially when he would peel off a few hundred dollar bills to pay for dinner in front of friends.
