Some paperwork crossed my desk this morning showing a cash payment received of $7,265. It shocked me because I would never feel comfortable carrying that much cash around. I'd always be worried about theft.
Does anyone here carry large amounts of cash around like that? Has anything ever happened when you were carrying around that much?

No. I did have a patient have three thousand and some odd dollars we had to lock up in security while he was hospitalized. It always seems suspicious to me to have thousands on you without a plan. Not that it was any of my business. The guy was a little disheveled and unkept looking. My dad usually has between two and three hundred in various bills on him.

I get nervous if I have over a hundred dollars in my purse. I can't imagine carrying thousands.

No, that's an insane amount to be carrying around unless you are planning to buy something with it that required a cash payment (i.e. car, jewelry, etc.).

If I were paying anything for that high an amount, I want an extra receipt, like a cancelled check or a credit card trail. No way that much in cash.
Couple hundred on vacation, sure, but otherwise no.

Goodness no, I don’t like carrying anything more then 50 cash because I am afraid I will lose it. I have had reasons to carry large amounts of cash before, but I went straight from bank to location cash was going and had a large envelope to keep cash in or from place I received cash straight to bank also with large envelope that would make it hard to lose or set down. I always felt like The Uncle in Its a Wonderful Life and was worried I would send someone to financial ruin.

I carry very little cash.
I do work with young adults who hold and carry cash. Not everyone has access to credit cards or checks to pay bills.

I usually get €200 from the ATM when I get cash, and (nearly) always have cash on me. Germany is still a very cash oriented society, so I tend to use cash almost daily. I have carried over $1000 on me in the past - we had to pay our rent at that time in person, and with either cash or a cheque. We didn't have a cheque account, due to the extra fees charged for them, so I would get cash from the bank, then walk across the road to the real estate agent's office, rather than pay the fee for a bank cheque.

I don't carry more than $20 on any given day. But, I might carry a large amount if I know I need to pay a big payment for something that I want paid in cash. We have students pay their tuition in cash for whatever reason. Not everyone has a bank account they can write a check on. They may not have a bank account or atm card only which may show up as a cash payment.

We used to own a retail store. I would often make large cash deposits. It always made me nervous driving around with several thousand dollars.
Now, I try to keep at least $20 cash on me, but I rarely carry cash anymore.

the most i will carry on average is about $300.00. why, i don't know. but thousands? no. aside from the obvious bulk of the bills, the repercussions from loss or theft is more than i'm willing to deal with.

I would be very nervous carrying that amount of cash around. I used to be the secretary / treasurer of a bowling league and at the end of the league I would have to do a prize money payout. Total amount was around 14,000. I made my DH come with me to the bank to get the $$, then I had to divvy it up to each team based on games won. I then had to take it with me to the bowling alley to hand out. I would pick the money up on a Friday put it into the envelopes and then hide it in my house until it was time to leave on Saturday. I was a nervous wreck every year when it was payout time.

I work as a server in a family restaurant, so I get a lot in cash tips. It's pretty normal for me to have $500-$1000 in cash at any given time, and sometimes as much as $1500-$2000. More than that, and I start pulling it out of my wallet to stash it. We often pay for larger purchases in cash, too. We recently bought a Jeep for my teenager to drive, and took in almost $14K in cash to pay for it. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
I'm 40 years old, and I have never lost my purse or had it stolen.

I get $100 from the ATM. When it gets down to around $20, I go get another $100. It usually lasts me about 2 weeks. If I go on vacation, I’ll get more.

I rarely have cash of any kind on me. Most of the time nothing but change or a few dollar bills. Maybe a $20 bill....
Dh however often carries cash, up to a couple of hundred at times. Occasionally he will have larger amounts as he's a contractor and sometimes people pay cash. However he isn't carrying it very long, usually just long enough to get to the bank.

I rarely even have $5 on me so these responses are interesting. Keep them coming!
The payment I referenced in my original post was registration and moving fees for a house boat the same person just purchased. It makes me wonder if they did the entire $100,000+ transaction in cash.😶

I'm pretty cash oriented, and have carried several hundred on me if I was going to get a money order or make a large payment for something in cash, but it made me insanely nervous to be carrying that much money around. Certainly never in the thousands and I'd never carry more than 20-30 bucks on my person during a normal day.
We're trying something different with our vacation fund in that I got a bank picture frame with the hole in the top and started putting singles and 5s in it when i could. Then I got nervous as it has a glass front and you can see into it and I didn't want people looking at it (cause you know we have so many people through our house) so I wound up putting it in a wallet then put the wallet in the frame bank.

When I worked at the grocery store, I was amazed about the wads of cash people carried. AMAZED.. I am taking about whipping out $100s of dollars for a lotto ticket or cigarettes..

What do you do if you want to buy a pack of gum? Use a card? My DH will use a card. Before I made a conscious decision to switch to cash I would use a card for my .95 coke every morning at the gas station. I've heard the argument, maybe here, that it's easier to account for every penny spent when you use a card as you have a record of each transaction no matter how small. I somewhat agree with that though my process is to keep x ammt for my "allowance" to be used for morning coke, random starbucks etc and when it's gone it's gone.

Any purchase even small goes on my card.. it's my debit card and no fees. If I feel like I need cash for something I will stop and get some. Doesn't happen much. I don't do valet parking.. at least not in years...I can't remember the last time someone had to park my car.. lol
