Ds and I started doing seasonal art projects when we started homeschooling. I take a base item and make four copies. Then, on the first day of the new season, ds alters/decorates the item in typical colors.
For example, last year I printed out a bare tree. Summer was tiny balls of green and red tissue paper for leaves and apples. Fall was leaf die cuts. Winter was deconstructed cotton balls for snow. Spring was paint dabbed on using a percil eraser. Another year, he did faux stained glass using stamp ink and puffy paint on clear binder dividers.
Anyway, I just realized I don't have an idea for this year. Help please!

Wreaths? You can probably find seasonally appropriate foamies and gems and other things to glue onto either styrofoam circles or just cut out circles.
T-shirts? You could get iron on transfer paper and the right crayons and draw an image and iron it on-- you could incorporate some lesson having to do with how the image is going to be the opposite direction when you iron it down.

Get him to lie on a large long piece of paper, draw around his frame and get him to "dress" himself in seasonal clothes. You could use any medium, paint, foam, texiles etc. He could design his own jumper, scarf, t-shirt, welly boots, shorts etc. Later you could compare the first outline to the fourth outline.
Would be interesting to see how big he gets in a year!
I am assuming your son is young.

You could pick a scene or view out your window and focus on how it changes over the seasons. I would think about the canvas sets from the craft store and paint the same scene in all of the seasons. Maybe you have a tree or garden within view or the city park for a field trip craft.

What about going 3D and using a pot as the base and your son creates whatever goes in the pot for the season? (Fall could be pumpkins or mums, winter could be a snow covered bare tree, spring could be tulips, summer could be a wide variety of things).

How old is your son?
I've recently seen on pinterest some decorated mason jars (or you could even use peanut butter jars/jelly jars, whatever you have). They are decorated for fall with leaves glued on the outside. Some of them have candles inside, but if your son is too young for that, you could use them as pencil jars, for a small floral arrangement, to hold silverware as a centerpiece, or keys by the door, or to collect loose change.
For winter you could cut out snowflakes and attach those, for spring/summer, flowers?

I suggest purchasing four small, square canvases.
Depending on his age, he (or you) can trace/draw a symbol of each season (e.g. fall - leaf; winter - snowflake; spring - flower; summer - sun) & paint the background, image, & sides.
OR
He (or you) can draw stripes with pencil using a ruler. Paint alternating colors that represent each season for him (e.g. fall - brown/ecru/red/orange/yellow; winter - grey/white/navy; spring light blue/light green/lavender/white; summer - blue/orange/yellow/white).

Thanks for the suggestions! He's eleven and wanting something a bit more challenging this year.  I love the canvas with alternating colors idea. I was also thinking of taping off the season name on canvas and then removing it after he applies the paint. |

Right now there are scarecrow type decorations out in all the stores. You could get a large one and put seasonal clothing on it.

How about baking something seasonal? You can't keep the finished goods until the end of the year, but you can take pictures of them before you eat them You can even start a recipe book with him with foods he can prepare on his own. Reading, writing, math, crafts,... It's got it all. |
