Anyone eating low-carb/keto? Or anyone who did and stopped? I've been eating low-carb for a couple of weeks now, and while I like some of the results, I just don't like eating all the meat. I'm thinking of doing more of a vegetarian diet. Has anyone switched from one to the other and still had good results? Quick weight-loss seems to be the big appeal of LC/Keto, but it still goes against everything I've ever known about "healthy" eating. (except for eating more whole foods)
Would love to hear any opinions of this way of eating

I don’t do Keto per se (I am not trying to lose weight although I would rather not gain any and I am in the period of life when you start gaining weight doing what you’ e always fine), but I do low-carb and avoiding-anything-processes. I eat a ton of vegetables and a lot of eggs, and I don’t worry about the vegetable/meat ratio, so my plate it typically 2/3 or 3/4 vegetables and the rest is chicken, fish, meat, etc.

No, but I am researching it. I have been fine for a few years but the weight now with menopause is awful. I am SO, SO frustrated. I have been listening to Dr. Berry. So far, I like what he says but I haven't started anything yet. m.youtube.com/user/KenDBerry

I will be watching this thread. I was very successful at losing weight with high protein/low carb about 18 months ago and I have kept all the weight off but I want and need to lose more (40 lbs according to my doctors). I've been at a plateau for a long time.
My doctor recommended Keto and I plan to start Monday (I've been researching for about 10 days to become familiar with it but still feel a bit overwhelmed by what I should/shouldn't eat). So any advice is truly appreciated.

I did Keto for a while but started having some very concerning "red flag" lab results that pointed to the diet negatively affecting my kidneys and liver. I started eating a less restrictive diet again and the lab values returned back to normal within a few months and the diet doesn't seem to have caused any permanent damage.
It's not a healthful way of eating for me. But I do have underlying health problems and have to be careful about diet, supplements, etc...

OP here - Anyone interested in checking Keto out I highly recommend the book Keto Living Day By Day - Kristie H. Sullivan. There is also a supportive FB group.

OP-why are you eating a lot of meat? Protein should't be more than 30%. I'm no expert at all, but have done keto and now lazy keto on and off for about 2 years. Now, I do eat a ton of eggs! When I'm not doing keto, I add oatmeal for breakfast a couple of times a week. My body does better with a few carbs every once in a while. I lift weights everyday and sometimes I need more energy than the fat gives me. And my cholesterol hasn't gone up since eating all of this fat and eggs.

OP here - Anyone interested in checking Keto out I highly recommend the book Keto Living Day By Day - Kristie H. Sullivan. There is also a supportive FB group. I've been following Kristie's program since June 1. My weight loss has been slower than I would like, (18-19 pounds) but I've gotten off Blood pressure meds, and expect to get off or decrease blood sugar meds at my appointment in October. I feel better than I have in YEARS, more energy, sleeping better and just overall. Less joint pain and fatigue. Keto may not be for everyone, but it surely agrees with me! You have to stick with the program, it's not one you can have a cheat day or cheat meal, that will throw you off track. Kristie also has a private Facebook group you can search for - Low Carb Journey - Cooking Keto with Kristie - you can search and request to join if you're interested. Someone here recommended it and that's how I found it. I wish I could remember who it was so I could say thank you! I highly recommend it, especially if you have insulin resistance, pre-diabetes or Type 2 diabetes! ETA - I am also almost off Prilosec for GERD - I take it about once a week if I eat something spicy or tomato based like pizza or spaghetti (my doctor recommended that I only take it if I need it as it's side effects are not good).

There are several approaches to a keto diet. Some use far too much fat (IMHO) and some use far too much protein.
I did keto for a while. I am more low carb now, probably a mix between keto and low carb (under 100 carbs a day). I also do intermittent fasting so I only eat 2-3 times a day (when I'm doing well! LOL)
A typical 3 meal day for me would be eggs for breakfast, a salad with a protein for lunch (the salad usually includes lettuce, a tiny avocado from Trader Joe's, maybe a chopped up egg, part of a tomato, and cucumber, often with some chicken), dinner is a protein and 2 veggies (sometimes a small side salad instead of one of the veggies).

I have been doing keto for about 10 months. I'm a slow loser too, but I'm ok with that (most days!). I've lost 51 lbs, TONS of inches, and all bloodwork is normal for me.

Thanks for asking about this topic motherlemur. I am trying to decide what to follow myself. I followed keto in the spring and I did lose weight.I ate eggs, chicken and vegetables. I didn't eat cheese substitutes for pizza crust and breads.I honestly don't think all that cheese is good for you. Then I fell off the keto wagon over the summer by eating ice cream. I'm at a crossroad as to what to do now. Do I go back to keto or maybe something like Weight Watchers where I can have fruit and ice cream once in a while. I know me though and once in a while can turn into a daily occurrence. I'm very interested in reading the posts here and will join the keto group CarolinaGirl71 mentioned.

I follow more of a whole 30, paleo diet. I did keto twice. The second time I went on the plan I lasted 99 days. I was enjoying myself (and I did eat a lot of cheese & fats I will admit). My cholesterol was high during my last round of blood work (I have never had high cholesterol in my life!) and all of the dairy jacked up my neck big time. I was in pain for 3 solid months with no relief which we believe was due to inflammation from all the dairy. *For me*, following a no-dairy, paleo diet just comes more naturally and I enjoy it more. I still stay low-carb.

I am not keto, just low carb and sort of loosely following the 8 Week Blood sugar Diet. I was diagnosed as type 2 on July 3rd so I started low carbing because of that. I've lost 30lb and reduced my Hba1c from 90 to 46 so I'm now 'pre-diabetic'. I don't restrict myself to any amount of carbs or cals per day but generally I'm under 50g carbs and 800cals.
I eat a lot of cauliflower!

I have been eating keto for just over six months. My husband started with me but really had no reason to lose weight. I've lost 15lbs to date, he lost about 22. I has a 30" waist and around 10% body fat. He is RIPPED right now. While I have not lost as much as he has, I have dropped a size in everything and I feel really great. I am starting to get more compliments including one from my MD yesterday. I have to get yearly labs drawn for a health benefit at work and ALL of my labs have improved. I have two friends that have been eating keto for 1-2 years. One lost over 80# to date and she was able to drop all of her pre-diabetes oral meds, her cholesterol and BP meds. My other friend has lost over 60# and dropped her pre-diabetes meds, too. Both ladies lost this weight over a year's time. It did not come off overnight. A lot of new keto followers expect an instant weight loss but that just is not how this works. You have to drink a lot of water which people often forget. You body might retain a lot of water at the beginning so you gotta drink a ton of water!
I have decided that I am a slow loser but I'm really ok with that. I also know that I really need to add a consistent exercise routine to my way of eating (WOE).
The biggest improvements are my memory and my energy levels. I also think I might have been depressed which I no longer feel. I can't really correlate that to this WOE but I do feel loads better.
There are several keto FB groups out there if you are interested. One word of caution, there are dozens of keto / LC theories out there. You just have to find one that works for you. Some of these FB groups are militant while others are more "lazy" which suits my needs a bit better. For example, one of the staples of the keto WOE is "bulletproof coffee." Notice the lowercase C. There IS a Bulletproof coffee out there which the strict keto followers do not endorse at all. This BPC is part of our every day morning routine and we often post our daily diets to newbies which results in a huge hand slap. The same goes for intermittent fasting (IF). I often IF at work just because that's what happens - it is not intentional. These militant groups also don't condone IF at all.
Both IF and BPC work for me although I have made some adjustments to fit my needs. MCT (medium chain triglycerides) or coconut oil is part of the health fats you need in the morning in your BPC but I just cut that because I was pretty certain it was giving me some reflux. I have it in other foods / drinks now and I'm fine.
If you are going to dive into keto, make sure you are doing your research reading about it before you decide. You really cannot do keto halfway. It is all or none. You can do low carb which is less than 50gr of carbs compared to keno's 25 or less. I find keto to be really easy for me but I do like meats and seafood. I also love my vegetables but even those are limited on keto. I love green vegetables so that is also easy for me.
I had some cravings very early on but I no longer crave the forbidden foods. The theory is that once you eliminate those things from your diet, you will no longer have a craving for it. I think that is very true. I used to eat pasta 2-3 times per week, same for other carbs - yogurt, oatmeal, breads, etc. I don't crave them.
You also need to get used to reading and interpreting food labels. There are often so many hidden sugars and things that are no-nos on the keto WOE, however, some folks are ok with a few of these things in small quantities for the sake of convenience. For me, that is bacon. I cannot always find the uncured, no sugar added bacon so I get the next best thing I can find and are willing to afford. I have to go almost across town to find that good bacon and it is about $8/lb vs the $4-5/lb stuff that is pretty close.
Keto is not a license to eat a ton of bacon and meat which is what a lot of non-keto'ers think. You have to be smart about your macros - fats, protein, and carb. I use a carb manager app and input my food intake. I have slacked on that recently because I'm busy and partly lazy. I also know what's been working for me and I make up a lot of my own foods which sometimes makes the input of those foods too cumbersome for me. I'm about to start looking for a new app that makes inputting a lot easier.
A few words of caution about the koto WOE..... you will get keto flu. Yes, that is a thing. Going into ketosis is a huge adjustment, esp your electrolytes. Most people feel very flu-like for a day or two. I had it but my dh did not. The cure is some chicken/beef bone or regular broth and replacing your electrolytes. I use magnesium and potassium supplements but that's it. You may also have a brief period of hair loss. I did but that improved with biotin and adding collagen. My skin is also seeing a huge improvement but I've also changed my skin care routine so can't say it is 100% keto related.
I'm sure I have tons more tips but I swore I would clean this house today. If anyone has specific questions, I'll do my best to answer. There are also several other Peas that eat keto and have a wealth of info.

I have been eating this way since Jan 1st.
I had a lot of inflammation due to gluten that is now gone. My joints feel awesome!
I have lost 43 pounds.

DH and I have been doing keto for 6 weeks now. He is down 17 pounds, I am down almost 12. I was very reluctant at first, because I was afraid it would be too restrictive and I'd be miserable like I am on every other diet.
Instead, I find myself loving it! I am satisfied at each meal, I don't have the late-night munchies, and I am sleeping better at night. I really haven't even been tempted to cheat, which is surprising! My kids had donuts this morning which are usually my kryptonite and it didn't even sound good.
We did not have the keto flu. The plan we used is called The Keto Reset Diet by Mark Sisson. The first 3 weeks are a step-down from your normal carb count. You limit to 150 grams of carbs/day for the first 3 weeks. The next 3 weeks are designed to put you into ketosis, with under 50g of carbs. By doing this, you avoid keto flu. I will say, I had leg cramps the first 3-4 days, which I realized was due to not enough water.
Sisson also recommends intermittent fasting, which is right up my alley because I hate eating breakfast! I have no problem eating dinner at 6-7 pm and not eating lunch until 1:00 the next day.
Mark Sisson also has a website, marksdailyapple.com which has some great recipes. Honestly, there's only been one of the recipes that we haven't liked, and that was because we didn't know that we don't like capers! LOL

mcscrapper , what carb manager app do you use? And thanks for the great post. I have been using My Fitness Pal - the free version. I am thinking about trying Carb Manager but I hear it is similar to MFP for entering food. With MFP, you can create your own "recipes" so to speak but you can't go an edit those in the free version from what I've seen. If you find a good one let me know. I committed myself to shopping for a new app next week. I might consider paying for one but I think the MFP is like $10 per month which is a lot I think.

I’m doing regular low carb. I can’t seem to stick to keto. If I do, it ends up only being for like a week. The 20 or less carbs isn’t sustainable for me. I try stay at 50 or less (total not net). I try to stick to green non starchy veggies, meat, cheese, eggs, and when I do eat carbs, I try to do whole grain. No soda, and not a lot of sugar. I’m down 40lbs... have a long way to go!

I am doing low-ish carb. Under 120 net carbs per day, though I am almost always under 75. I’ve lost 40 pounds in about 4 months, and I’m very happy with that.
I do eat a lot of protein, but sometimes it is a Quest bar or a protein drink to supplement regular food. I don’t go overboard on the meat. I remember the first time my ex did low carb - he ate so much meat that he smelled like meat. Yuck!

I have used both apps - Carb Manager and My Fitness Pal and I keep going back to MFP. In the free version you can use the SCAN option to check foods - I use it all the time in the supermarket. Also, you can upload recipes from the internet with MFP with the free version and you have to pay for that option with CM.
I have a very good friend with type 1 diabetes following a fairly strict keto program under the guidance of a doctor and in a program. Her ultimate goal is to cut back on insulin use and of course to be healthier. We are very supportive of one another and often send pictures and recipes of what we are eating that day - because, who else would be interested other than someone else in the same situation We spoke at great length yesterday and I was talking about my frustration with the foods and she told me to just do what I thought would be best for ME. I went off to the super market and stocked up on salad greens, peppers, APPLES (higher in carbs than a lot of programs want you to have) and a few other items I like. I switched the pork recipe I was planning for dinner to a chicken with mushrooms (cooked in butter) that was so simple and so good.
On the keto plan I was following they wanted you to stay under 7 carb grams a meal and 20 a day. Yesterday I had 35 carb grams and I felt fine. MFP keeps me in line with calories and other markers (protein, fats, carbs, etc) and I can link my Fitbit. Keto/low carb does raise your fat grams (I exceed what I am supposed to on MFP) but it's what I want to try. I cook in real butter, I put real cream in my coffee - no sugar (so 200 calories a day are for 4 tbls of real cream in a hot cup of coffee in the morning and iced coffee mid-day) The fat is supposed to help you feel satiated. I have a couple boxes of the Atkins bars in case I need a treat or an easy lunch. I am surprised at how good they are! Yesterday I had the lemon one for the first time with my iced coffee and it was a great break.
Would anyone be interested in a weekly post where we can share our programs and any helpful hints or recipes and just be supportive of one another regardless of which WOE we choose?
Jill
(P.S. Today is my birthday and will be the first time I won't have cake... But I turn 60 (!!!) next year and I NEED to drop weight and get healthier. Next year I will be at Disney World for my big day )

I started keto at the end of February. I'm down 30. I do not feel restricted or stuck on bacon. I also do IF because I was already not eating breakfast so why not. But, the keto is the trick for me. Eating enough fat to feel satiated is great! I used to eat like crap - seriously Little Debbie for breakfast - and was never hungry. I was just eating crap filled with fat. Now, I try to eat something healthy with enough fat. Like Melissa said I to think people go overboard with the fat. But, I'll eat my eggs fried in butter or my tomatoes with a splash of olive oil. We eat very "whole." My carbs come from the veggies usually. I was pretty strict for awhile but now am eating about 50 carbs per day vs. 20.
I do not eat bread on purpose. No buns on burgers, scrape off the pizza toppings, etc. What I determined is when I do eat bread my gut is very unhappy. What I don't know is if that means it is related to a gluten intolerance or not. I have autoimmune issues and gluten is always that thing you read about. Who knows. But I ate a slice of pizza yesterday and am still paying for it.
I would like to lose 15 more pounds for no other reason than to have some room to gain muscle back. There is no science in that, LOL! More importantly, I'm down from a 16/18... and I just bought size 10 pants. Size 10. Last time I had a size 10 was 9th grade. All my other pants are falling off.
Can I also recommend the Reddit /r/keto. Super duper helpful!

I am doing keto, I started May 28 and as of September 28 I have lost 30 lbs, 5" off my bust, 7" off my waist and 5" off my hips.
I'm happy with the way things are going, I feel good, I no longer have any cravings. There are chips, treats in my house and I don't care about them at all. Once I lose my last 20 I do want to transition over to eating more Paleo style, adding in some foods I have not been eating, in moderation.
