I just got a new Maytag washer. I'm not adapting very well. I really, really wish we could go back to the golden days when I could easily control how much water went into each load.
I use bleach regularly. I hate, hate, hate smelly towels, and so each and every load of kitchen or bath towels gets bleach in it. I've never trusted that if I used the bleach dispenser it would be completely cleared out, and my fear was that if my next load was darks some of the leftover bleach would get in and I would ruin everything. With all of my previous washers I could wait until there was plenty of water in the machine and then add my bleach directly to the water. Since my new machine uses approximately 2 teaspoons of water for each load, I don't want to add the bleach directly to the laundry because I would basically be pouring bleach directly onto the towels.
So do you use your bleach dispenser, and have you ever had a problem with it?

My parents have a washer with a bleach dispenser and they have never had issues. My mom usually leaves the white towels as the last load and then will run an extra rinse cycle while the washer is empty in case she’s worried it didn’t fully dispense the bleach and it washes the tumbler, so it’s a win win.

I understand, however, it hasn't been a problem here.

I've never had a problem but my bleach load always goes last since I use the hottest water setting. I think of that as my 'clean the machine' load.

I trust it. I also don't time the load as far as other loads go. I just put my white towels in, pour a glug or two of bleach in the dispenser, and go. I have never had an issue with any leftover bleaching the next load.

If it's a matter of just the smelliness of the towels, you can use white vinegar instead. It will get the smells out and is a natural water softener. I pour some directly on my towels in the laundry machine before it starts (HE washer).
I do trust the bleach dispenser. After 5 or so years, the loads after a load of whites have not gotten bleached so I think it's working.

I have never had any problems with my bleach dispenser in my front loading washer. However, I have some of the same fears as you about bleach getting on the next load so I usually wash a load with bleach last and let the washer dry out overnight. I have (I’m not even sure letting it dry out would work) . I don’t use a whole lot of bleach though, just once or twice a week. I started buying granulated bleach since I am also a klutz and that helps me no to spill bleach all over.
eta: do you have an extra rinse setting on your washer? You could use that to be extra sure but of course that is more water.

I always trust mine and have never had an issue. I did have your same concern when I first got my front loader.

I also have a Maytag - a front loader. I only use the dispenser when I use bleach. Otherwise I just take it out. I don't need it for anything else.

I have a speed queen top loader and I guess it never occurred to me to not trust the bleach dispenser. However, I only bleach whites/kitchen towels and then I do a load of colored towels without bleach right after (or a load of sheets or blankets or whatever).

my machine *may* have a bleach dispenser. i have never used it though.
i also have never had smelly towels. the only time my clothes are smelly is if i forget them in the washer and think (hope) they are fine and just put them in the dryer. then i pull them out, realize they are funky and have to wash them again.
now i am curious why towels (specifically) would be smelly?

We use our bleach dispenser when we wash kitchen and bath towels (and DS' socks). We then wash our regular, non-bleach whites in the next load just to be safe.
My biggest fear is DH accidentally spilling bleach around the dispenser and forgetting to wipe it up and then other clothes getting bleach on them.

I’ve never used it because we can’t use bleach. Dh is the problem, not the washers

If my machine only used 2 tablespoons of water, I think I might have 2nd thoughts. That is not enough water to dilute it. It would make me nervous to wash in so little water.

I’ve never had a problem. Clorox makes a granulated bleach in packs like dishwasher tabs, I’ve used those without a problem. They’ve worked well when DH does a load with bleach because he’s a little sloppy when he pours.

I've been told I have an especially sensitive sense of smell, so that might be part of it. But have you ever had anyone in your household jam their dirty laundry (including wet towels) into the hamper, and maybe the wash doesn't get done for several days? Not a pleasant smell, and while the towels smell fine after they've been washed and dried, the minute you start drying yourself with the towel that funky smell comes back. Even worse is dish rags that haven't air dried before throwing them in the hamper. Gross. It's just me and my husband at home now and it's hardly ever an issue any more, but it's a habit I've continued - I just automatically bleach every load. Problem solved.

I just don’t use the bleach dispenser - I wash my bleach load last on laundry day. I load the washer, turn it on so it fills, and at the beginning of the agitate cycle I add a splash of bleach straight into the washer. I always run an extra rinse on whites so I feel confident the bleach is all gone after that load. I fold laundry or clean the adjacent bathroom while I’m waiting for the washer to fill so it is time well spent.
I really love my bleach load because it smells so good.

Thanks for all the replies and suggestions. It's good to know that so many of you use the bleach dispenser with no problems.
I like the idea of doing a load of whites after a bleach load.
I also think I'll give vinegar a try.

My current machine and the previous one both started to rust around the bleach dispenser. I now use bleach tablets. They are in dissolvable pouches like tide pods. I bleach all my towels and white sheets.

I worry about it, but have had my Maytag HE top loader for 12 years, and it's never been a problem. If I use bleach (rarely), I usually wash a load of whites after it, just in case.
I started using vinegar in my towels several years ago, and like it better than bleach.

I have a Whirlpool HE top loader but do not use bleech. I use vinegar in the fabric softener section for my towels. I also select deep water when I was towels and bedding.
No stinky towels.
