Go ask them about it before you call code enforcement.
I am talking about that one car, not a pile of them.
Last night I had to remove my car from my property because one of my 5 neighbors was offended by it. My son wrecked it and we were in the middle of ordering parts to fix. My husband had back surgery in the middle of this so it has been slow going. And it is way too expensive to have a shop fix it. The car still runs perfectly and is fun to drive , it just has body damage.
Let me tell you about my little car. It drove me out of my home time and away from the people who had decided that my life was theirs to do what they demanded. Getting a car meant that I was able to get a job, because we lived so far out of town. My parents rarely gave me money and would have called the police if I had tried to walk to town. ( small town, dad knew everybody in town). I finally left New York to go to a real college in Montana and got away from my family. That car got me there.
I know I am being overly dramatic, but I just got watch the beginning of my freedom get hauled off and it will become junk by next week. I am in tears over this. I shouldn’t be but I am.
So go ask before you call.

Why didnt you have it towed somewhere else in the mean time? a friend in the country? Esp if it meant so much to you.

I'm sorry you're upset about it, and it sounds like you've had a lot of stuff going on besides that. I don't mean to pile on. I do have a few questions.
If it runs fine, why was it in violation of code? Something seems off. Having body damage doesn't make something against code in anywhere I'm aware of -- but not being registered or road-worthy does.
What would your reaction have been if they came and talked to you about it? Try to convince them why they shouldn't be bothered by it?
Where was it parked? In a yard? Driveway? Do you have a garage or carport? If so, what's in the garage that the broken down car can't go in there?
How long was it going to be until you could fix it?
Since it still runs, don't let it become junk -- can't it be sold? I know you'd rather keep the car, but at least you could get the money.
There's just more to this... road-worthy cars parked in reasonable locations don't get removal notices. I'm sorry you're dealing with this, it sounds really stressful.

I'm sorry - this is why DH insists on living in the middle of no-where...we have more cars on our property than HOA neighbours would tolerate

We live on a dirt road off a dirt that has no traffic. We have no hoa. We should have covered it. It was out of sight unless you drive in our driveway
Right now I am just sad and I need to be sad for a little bit longer. I am sorry if my post makes some of you handslappy. I needed to get this out. You can’t make me feel anymore stupid or sad.

I just looked at your post history. You've posted about raising turkeys, having a pre-formed pond a neighbor gave you a year ago that you just recently installed, needing to drain the water weekly so you decided to build a MARSH on your property, decorating for Christmas year-round, your neighbor trying to buy your house at half what it's "worth," and that's just the first page of your most recent posts.
As I said... there's more going on here. I'm guessing your neighbor was happy to have something against code they could get enforced, to make a small dent in their annoyance.

I'm sorry. Could you not have just moved it for a day?
Around here if the vehicle is moved every x # of hours/days then it isn't in violation.

Most of our neighbors raise animals/ livestock. We are on enough acreage for people to do that. I only have birds. Decorate for Christmas is inside my house. Why would what is inside my house bother anybody. But let me tell you those Christmas lights are going up and staying up this year! My ducks like their pond. And the “marsh” is not even the size of a regular in ground swimming pool. It more of a drainage area for the pond What’s wrong with a marsh anyway? My property is big enough, is a rural, and I like cattails and marsh plants. The house my neighbor wanted to buy is not the house I live in. It is the one my son lives in. And you are right the neighbor that complained would love to see all our birds and their houses gone. BUT the funny thing is , THEY DONT COMPLAIN WHEN MY HUSBAND PLOWS THEIR DRIVEWAY, in the winter! Guess who isnt getting the driveway done this year. And guess who isn’t getting their potholes filled in either. Btw I added geese to the mix. They love the pond even more than the ducks.

Too much work to keep moving it, until all the parts came it. As sad as I am , it was time. Just think how happy my neighbor will be today. Moving it completely made somebody’s day.

I pay taxes so my city code enforcement can deal with issues like this instead of taking it into my own hands. Yes, it might have been code officers who were offended---and no one complained.
In my city, the code officers patrol and cite those who are out of compliance.
ETA: I just read that they gave you the name of who complained. I'm sorry it all came to pass.

They didn’t give us the name. They can not do this. The couple happened to stop by and asked a couple of questions that were almost word for word on the notice. We said nothing to them about the notice. Too much of a coincidence.

Count me as another who is confused about why the car had to be towed and junked. We don’t have the time or place to store the car until we can start working on it. The notice said we had to remove it. My son can only keep it for a couple of days. It is time for it to go. The money to fix it is money that I can put to paying off my new car. It doesn’t make sense to spend a thousand on a car that is only has sentimental value.

I was just going to say, can the neighbors see your place? Then, yea, I'd put up a fence, or plant some trees/shrubs to block their view.

I'm sorry it went down that way - I'm sure it's not how you intended for any of it to end! Your DS is okay after the accident, though? If so, then try to keep that in the front of your mind. He's not nearly as as replaceable as a car - even a sentimental one!

I'm really sorry. That car clearly meant a lot to you.
Our neighbors across the street (sort of-- their street is perpendicular to ours) have had a clunker Monte Carlo in their driveway since we've lived here. That's 22 years this Fall. We've never seen the car drive and have no reason to believe that it's functional. Maybe a decade ago they poured additional concrete to the side of the driveway for the sole purpose of housing the car. In addition, they park about 3-4 other cars in the driveway on a daily basis because their garage is full of junk.
Clearly, the car has to have some sort of sentimental value. I can't think of any other reason why they'd have this nonfunctioning ancient vehicle in their driveway for more than two decades. It's hard for us as neighbors, however, to see past the fact that the car is an utter eyesore in our suburban neighborhood. I've never called the city about it because I'm not convinced that the neighbors are doing anything wrong. I can't lie, however. When we've had strong winds I've said I wouldn't be too sad if a tree or huge limb fell on it (though I think they'd probably still keep the car).

Our neighbor has a Dodge Dart he is working on. the same year as he was driving when his daughter was born. His old car had no floorboards and they could turn heat on or roll the windows down. But he treasured that car because the daughter was almost born in it. His wife was afraid that if the baby was born in it she would have fallen to to the roadway! You never know the story why somebody keeps a piece of junk.

You never know the story why somebody keeps a piece of junk. Agreed! I can also see that it depends on where the junk is kept and how intrusive it is to others. Again, I'm very sorry you're going through this. Especially so if the car wasn't visible except from your property.

I'm sorry, I understand about getting attached to a car (or other object). You didn't deserve it. Focus on how that car might bless some other person down the road and give them freedom in some way - if it's on on the road, then the parts or the salvage $$ that it creates. You're doing a good thing.

I was so upset when we traded in my mini van for DH truck, I made DS go with DH to the dealership. I couldn't leave her there after everything we had been through together, good and bad, for almost 13 years. The sinful number of trips to Disneyland, hauling kids on field trips, decking her out for Trunk or Treat, the projectile puke when they were little to the smell of 6 tween basketball players after an all day tournament, the near accidents, the time she caught on fire....They gave us $5000 for the trade in, and I knew she was going to the junk yard.
I got DH hand me down Jeep Cherokee, and I took it to our mechanic a couple of days later, for a weird noise DH swears he couldn't hear. When I told him my van was gone, and that I felt irrationally bad about abandoning her, he laughed, hugged me and said it's totally normal. Then he said remember when you junk a car, older car parts are hard to find, so it's like donating rare organs to cars. Your van might have the exact part someone desperate not to have to buy a new car right now needs. It made me feel better. {Hugs}
