SIL talked me into trying out a podcast called S-Town. I'm hooked -I'm not done listening yet. One of my employees heard me listening and got enthralled too so now I'm only playing it when we are in the room together. So in between I started Serial, I'm nearing the end of Season one and will likely listen to all of these back to back. I'm loving it!
What are some podcasts you listen to? I am 100% not interested in anything political. This true crime stuff is fascinating but I am open to other stuff as well. How am I so late to this?

It's the last season of it, but I love Dear Sugars. It's one where you can just listen to one episode. It kind of feels like a mini therapy session. Cheryl Strayed (writer of Wild) is one of the hots of the show. The Daily is great for a quick current events update. I like the political podcasts from Crooked Media too - Pod Save America being my favorite. This American Life is good too.

are podcasts basically like radio shows except for they're available on the internet to be streamed or downloaded?
(I make sure to listen to certain half-hour long satellite radio shows every day during my commute to/from work; are podcasts similar?)

I know this is dumb and I have heard of podcasts before but I don't know what they are? Even my 84 year old mom listens to them, but I can't figure out how to download them anywhere. I don't have Apple anything, and my laptop doesn't seem to be able to handle huge downloads........ (My cellphone is ancient and I don't have unlimited service, so I don't download on there either).

Some podcasts are series (like serial, S town, etc). Most are episodes that are independent of themselves. Usually the podcast has a theme or genre (true crime, health, wellness, politics, etc). I generally listen to true crime or health related podcasts. Some of my favorites:
*health and/or self improvement* The model health show Rise Anatomy of a marriage The Chalene show Fat burning man with Abel James (wish he had more new episodes) Better everyday with dr Brooke and Sara Fragoso Healthy moms podcast The spa doctor Losing 100 lbs with phit and phat
*other* Katie Couric (just found this. Not all episodes are political but some are. I really like it) Serial Small down dicks (true crime/-dick is apparently another name for detective) Daily show
I tried to listen to my favorite murder and hated it. What am I missing? Does it take awhile to get used to?

If you enjoy true crime I can highly recommend My Favorite Murder, Criminal, Casefile and True Crime Garage.
Also, Thinking Sideways. They ended their podcast a few months back, but I think there are close to 300 episodes available. It's about unsolved mysteries, ranging from Chupacabra to disappearances and unsolved murders, Atlantis, maritime mysteries etc. It's fantastic, and one of the more family-friendly ones with no swear words.
The two podcasts you mentioned are both in the true crime genre, so hopefully you will enjoy some of my recommendations. These are all a new case per episode.

I think that many people here want to know HOW to get them....... Do you download an app? Do you stream them? Some of us don't know.
I tried to download the app so I could listen to MSNBC's podcasts, but my laptop wouldn't let me. I'd LOVE to be able to surf around and look for Alec Baldwin's podcasts (he has such a soothing voice). I'd LOVE to get Elton John's podcasts but you have to pay for those.

I like Malcolm Gladwell's Revisionist History. He takes a close look at a topic each time -- could be anything from when McDonald's changed their french fry recipe to Elvis being unable to correctly sing the lyrics of one song (ever!) to why professional basketball players don't use underhand free shots when they're much more accurate. He's a really fascinating guy.
The other two I really liked were S-Town and Serial (season 1.)

You can stream some directly from a website. You can just google the name of the podcast you want, or you can get an app such as Podcast Addict, which is what I have. Apple has their own app. Google Play and Spotify also allow you to stream from their sites or their app. I use Podcast Addict because I can add podcasts from all over the web to the app. It sorts them by category. The app can use what's called an RSS to help you keep up with the new episodes.

My all time absolute favorite podcast is Last Podcast on the Left, but many people here would absolutely clutch their pearls over it. It's comedy/horror/true crime and EXTREMELY irreverent. They won a People's Choice Webby a few years ago and now they sell VIP tickets to their shows for over $100 each!
I also like Stuff You Should Know Fresh Air Dr Death Dirty John This American Life The Moth Daily Zeitgeist Dan Carlin's Hardcore History Lore S-Town Also: Just found a new one - Wolverine by Marvel!
I forgot to add that if you are an Audible member, they also have podcasts - some of which are exclusive.

I like :
Dude That’s F****d Up - DTFU podcast will pull it up on google My Favorite Murder S-Town Dirty John Dr Death Gladiator - this is all about Aaron Hernandez and his fall from grace Believed - this is stories of the victims of Larry Nassar and it is extremely graphic so if you are triggered by the descriptions of sexual assault I would skip this one. It really gives insight into how he got away with it for so long. Watch What Crappens - two men recap bravo shows five days a week Juicy Scoop with Heather McDonald Straight Talk with Ross Mathews Criminal Lore The Daily Up First This American Life Here’s the Thing with Alec Baldwin
Most of these you can stream right from their website, no downloading required. Just google the title of the show and their website will pop up. Most shows will have a link to a streaming site like Stitcher that will let you play the episodes for free. Podcasts are different from audiobooks because the majority of it is free content, it’s like listening to NPR or talk radio.

Look for the purple podcast icon on your iphone. Search for a podcast or browse by topic. You can listen to an episode or subscribe to a podcast and get notifications when new episodes are available.

Get an app so you can find and subscribe to things that interest you. PodCruncher or Overcast are a couple I have used. If you have an Android device Castbox has really good reviews and is free.
I love podcast. I listen daily for the most part. I listen to music a lot too but I don't have as much adult interaction as I would prefer most day so they fill some space in that way.
Favorites of mine:
The Enneagram Journey That Sounds Fun with Annie F Downs Sorta Awesome A Couple Cooks Sexy Marriage Radio Anatomy of Marriage The Big Boo Cast The Simple Show Inside Trader Joes Building a StoryBrand with Donald Miller How I Built This The Happy Hour with Jamie Ivey The Lazy Genius Fun Therapy The Practical Minimalists StartUp Podcast Heavyweight Typology Rhythms of Home Tony Robbins Rise Together The Next Right Thing Restoring the Soul Good To Be Home

And they have some great topics too! Yay! Always love finding fellow fans! I'm a 40-something mom in a conservative area and I feel like I can never publicly admit to being a fan! They actually archived the Facebook page because they realized it was becoming a cesspool. I am a Patreon supporter because I love them so much. They used to be way more responsive to their fans, but they got huge so fast so a lot of that went away. I have had discussions with both Ben and Henry on Twitter and then when I saw them live in Austin, Ben remembered me from our tweets. Henry talked to me from the stage. I talked to Marcus about how appreciative I am of his openness about mental health and he gave me a hug. Now you can't even get in to see them after the show without paying $150 for VIP tickets. They used to just hang out with people in the venue after the show - usually because they were performing in a bar. Now they're playing the Paramount in Austin! I don't begrudge them any of this, though. I'm incredibly happy that they're successful. I like them so so so much more than My Favorite Murder. Their vocal fry drives me nuts and they don't research nearly as well as Marcus does!

If you like Serial’s first season, there is another that goes more in-depth on Adnan Syed’s case. It’s the first season of Undisclosed. The first season of Serial is part of the curriculum for my Criminology class. The Undisclosed season on Adnan is from the viewpoint of 3 lawyers: OMG, I have heard her name so many times. It’s the sister of Adnan’s friend, who brought the case to the Serial people. And, two other lawyers, who understand criminal law. It’s jaw dropping at times.
My professor has suggested S-town. I simply haven’t been able to tear myself away from Adnan’s case.

I listen to a lot of current events podcasts, so I won’t bother listing those since you’re not interested in politics.
If you like true crime/suspense:
A Killing On The Cape A Murder on Orchard Street Moms and Murder My Favorite Murder Atlanta Monster Dirty John
History and Current Events:
Slow Burn (I guess you could call it political, but it’s political history rather than current events) Serial (season 3, the current season, is phenomenal) Gladiator:Aaron Hernandez and Football Inc.
