I can eat turkey but I don't love it. Can't stand gravy, cranberry sauce, stuffing or pumpkin pie. I like sweet potatoes and that is it.
As the only cook in my family I object to having to fix a prescribed menu that takes hours to cook and I won't eat any of it. I stopped doing the traditional Thanksgiving dinner years ago. I will be happy to cook if I can fix a normal meal for our small family. My mother hasn't cooked a Thanksgiving dinner (or much else) since I was a teenager.
Otherwise we go out. There are few restaurants open on Thanksgiving and you have to go very early to the ones that are open if you don't want to wait in line. Nothing in our town is open so it means getting dressed up and driving an hour round trip to eat out at either 11 am or 4 pm when I'd much rather fix a regular meal at home.
I love the sentiment of Thanksgiving; I just hate being expected to fix a particular menu or trek to another town to a restaurant I don't particularly like.
Wondered if anyone else felt this way?

Turkey is blah. I'll eat it, but I'd never choose to have it. I hate gravy and stuffing or any vegetables that are cooked in some kind of casserole type shenanigans. I do like sweet potatoes a lot, but not the ways they are generally prepared at Thanksgiving (I like them roasted, with some spice - usually Aleppo pepper, not mashed or with sweet stuff on them). I like mashed potatoes. I make a cranberry-orange sauce that I like, but most I don't like. Pumpkin pie is not a favorite. So, basically, Thanksgiving is not my favorite meal. I'm with you

I am not a fan of traditional thanksgiving meal. Turkey is meh. The only turkey I’ve really liked is deep fried. I like mashed potatoes, sweet potatoes, and green beans. We usually have noodles at thanksgiving too. Lately what we’ve done is ordered a meal from a local grocery store. One year we had prime rib. Another we had ham. Not sure what we’ll do this year. It typically comes with sides that compliment the main dish—potato and vegetable along with rolls. We also get a meat and cheese tray and a veggie tray plus a mixed small bites tray for dessert. Then, because no one else apparently has noodles at thanksgiving, my mil makes noodles from scratch and my dh cooks them.

Pick me pick me.
I didn't grow up eating poultry at all because my dad had issues. Once I was out of the family home, I couldn't wait to try chicken, and turkey and duck. I like chicken, but prefer the dark meat. I like duck too, but turkey just doesn't do it for me. I made it a couple of times, and then begged off of it. We usually have lamb. I have pumpkin issues because it requires so much doctoring to taste good. Crikey, sandpaper would likely taste good if you added all that stuff to it. My in-laws like pumpkin pie, but I make a version that is pumpkin swirled into gingerbread that works for me and everyone else. I can't bear cranberry from a can, but am okay with fresh as it masks the lack of flavor of the turkey. I'm meh about mashed potato and gravy is a good distractor. I do love me some sweet potatoes, but can do without the marshmallows on top. I just want it roasted.
Lol anyone want to invite me for Thanksgiving? I sound so grateful and gracious.
ETA: I forgot to tell you my feelings about stuffing. I actually like it. Even the crappy box variety. Oh, and no vegetables in a casserole type thing.

We don't care for turkey - but most everyone enjoys a "left over turkey" sandwich. I love stuffing and I like most of the side dishes -- but I've changed them. No green bean casserole, but fresh green beans wrapped in a bacon slice and cooked; sweet potatoes sliced, with nutmeg and OJ and butter; fresh cranberry relish . So I make the sides and we usually get some good quality deli turkey for a sandwich!

One thing I do is bake a ham in addition to a smaller turkey. It always goes over really well. I also use the Pioneer Woman's mashed potato recipe and it is SO GOOD! Oh and I always bake a couple apple pies and only 1 pumpkin since more of my family likes the apple.

I don't like turkey. Or macaroni and cheese (not sure if this is cultural but it's definitely on my family's thanksgiving table).

I don’t care for turkey, stuffing or cranberry sauce. Thankfully, my Asian/Hawaiian family always has other non-traditional things to eat.

I like turkey but I'm not keen on many of the traditional sides - so we're having roast mini potatoes instead of mashed, a sweet potato and pecan casserole (no marshmallows - and from scratch not the tinned candied yams -yuck), loaded cauliflower, I make my green beans from fresh and cook them up in the skillet with some bacon - yum!
But it's just the four of us and no outside pressure to have the traditional sides...

I am not a fan of traditional Thanksgiving. Lucky for me, DH isn't either. We almost never have a traditional meal unless we are guilted into by his parents. Otherwise, we have Prime Rib or something along those lines. We tried the eating out thing and while it was ok, the older DH and I get the less we want to deal with people. So we would rather stay home and make steaks or something.

I don't like turkey at all. The rest of it is good. Of course, I am the only cooking, so I pretty much have trained my family to like what I eat for this meal. I do like leftovers, so that helps. I would LOVE to go to a restaurant, any restaurant for this meal.

if you are the thanksgiving host, you can cook whatever you feel like. my mom cooked traditional christmas dinner. now that we kids are doing it, we don't. we do BBQ or breakfast or whatever we want to.
my husbands side also did the traditioanl xmas dinner. one year the host had foot surgery and we switched to going out on xmas eve. guess what, we like doing it that way now, and we do it most of the time now. it is ok to make your own or new traditions.
if you don't like turkey, do chicken. get costco chickens if you don't want to cook them. the more important thing is getting together and making memories.

Me!!! I would rather eat something else. I am not a big fan of poultry. I hate traditional green bean casserole (give me fresh veg please), hate stuffing or dressing, and I’m just mediocre on everything else. Although I appreciate my in-laws cooking for us, they do a lot of canned stuff and I don’t care for that at all. Canned yams with marshmallows? Gross. From scratch candied sweet potatoes? Delicious..
Whenever we do Thanksgiving at my parents’, we make a nice meal but choose something else because none of us care about Thanksgiving food. Like one year, I cooked braised short ribs in red wine, and it was so great to not eat turkey.

I don't love turkey. Apparently, a lot of my family doesn't, either, because we added ham last year. But I do like a lot of the sides-- my favorite part of Thanksgiving dinner is some seven layer salad on my buttered Grands biscuit with a little bit of gravy on the edge. Seven layer salad has eggs, bacon, peas, lettuce, and cheese, so it's basically a full meal on its own, right?

Me! ugh. And there have always been just the four of us since we never traveled to extended family for Thanksgiving. Since I hate to cook it has always been a drag to do all that cooking for hours, then we eat it up in a short time, done. For awhile when the kids were younger my dh thought it was a lot of trouble to cook a turkey (which we know it isn't really) so he'd take the kids away to let me work. hahahaha That was only when they were little though. Because I hate to cook my family never learned to like fancier homemade things and were always happy with boxed stuffing, and other shortcuts. But still.... And they liked the traditional things, and everyone likes turkey except me. Fast forward to a few years ago. My dh's sister was getting ready to spend her first holiday season alone since their mom, and her husband, had died. And both kids were away at school and not coming home because it's such a short vacation. Dh's sister asked if he could come up to spend some time with her. She asked me if I would mind that, and after I said no of course I wouldn't mind then she kept saying "oh thank you, oh I'm so sorry to ask P. to leave at a holiday..." etc etc etc etc. Meanwhile inside I was thinking "YES!!!! NO COOKING FOR ME!!!" I've always said -- and my family probably thought I was joking -- "can't we just have pizza and beer for Thanksgiving this year?" lol. So yep that's what I had for my Thanksgiving alone! Got my favorite pizza, my favorite beer, got in my PJs, turned on Netflix...such a wonderful Thanksgiving. lololol

I know I'm supposed to appreciate all that family time but we are down to 3 of us. I see my Mother every day and of course my husband. I cook several meals a week for Mother. He and she sometimes go shopping to places like Sam's and Aldi and have a meal out together. Maybe I could send them off on their on on Thanksgiving? No, I know I can't... but if I could somehow make it their idea...

I don’t like turkey.
One time when it was just my family I made a really elegant pork roast with roasted vegetables and some other stuff. Delicious and much more my preference.

I have no use for mashed potatoes and gravy. I'm just not a gravy/sauce person, and potatoes mashed are just a waste of a good potato, which need crispy edges and soft interiors to reach their full potential.
Turkey is just kind of meh, but better if smoked.

I don't hate it but I'm pretty ambivalent about it. Once a year is plenty for me and I never understood those that turned around and did the same meal at Christmas. It's all so heavy, and I don't know, it's just not what I'd choose to eat if I could have anything I wanted. I do enjoy other people being so excited about it though.

OP, what happens if you cook a regular meal? Does the family object? Do they love traditional thanksgiving food? If yes, I would either order a premade meal from the grocery store or teach them how to cook. Maybe you can have one or two traditional items and fill in the rest with what you want. Either way, still teach them to cook and help out so it isn’t so much on you.

I eat turkey once a year, on Thanksgiving, but I don't care for it. I find the thinnest piece which is challenging because my mom cuts thick slices. Sometimes, there is lamb too, but I don't like lamb at all. I love most of the side dishes. My plate has the smallest, thinnest slice of turkey and lots of sides. I like pumpkin pie but prefer apple pie.
