I love tater tot hot dish. It might be called a casserole in other places, but it's hot dish in MN. I like lefse and can make it on my own grill. I love fried walleye. I enjoy a salad that is more like a dessert than an actual salad. We buy homemade pasties that are made by church groups doing fundraisers.

my parents were from the midwest.. but their odd food habits had to do with ethnic dishes.. and not "midwest".. like my granddad put sugar on leaf lettuce, and would break up a slice of white bread into milk to eat it. my dad puts butter, brown sugar and cinnamon on brown rice. we only ate brown rice at our house. my mom liked brown sugar cake (with hot sauce), basic stew.. beef, carrots and potatoes. we all eat brunost..norweigen cheese we don't eat peanut butter sandwiches.

I can't ever figure out where I am from. I'm not from the traditional Midwest (although I don't believe that is truly the midwest) and not really the north. The old travel books had Colorado in the Southwest, but that really doesn't seem right.

Sloppy Joes, 3-tiered German chocolate cake made from the recipe on the back of the baking bar, 4 layer carrot cake from scratch with cream cheese frosting, raisin cream pie. apple crisp with oatmeal crumbly topping, my Grandma's baked chicken, banana cream pie with the meringue toasted just right, rhubarb pie with a scoop of ice cream, corn-on-the cob fresh from the garden dripping in butter and open-face roast beef sandwiches with a scoop of mashed potatoes and brown gravy covering everything. I think I'm making myself hungry. lol I do like orange jello with grated carrots and crushed pineapple though.

Um, I think jello is part of our main food groups!
My favorite is Orange Jello Salad. Mandarin oranges, grapes, pineapple, and strawberries, all in a purƩed cottage cheese and Cool Whip schmooie, flavored with orange jello powder.

Pasties and pierogi always remind me of my grandparents and midwestern dinners. We're going to be making pierogi on Thursday with dd and her fiance. DH and dd learned all the tricks from my MIL... make the most tender dough and delicious filling. would love a good recipe for Pasties!

I am not sure if I fall into the Northern category...but I am Northern New England so that has to count for something. tourtiere (meat pie) ooooh, do you have a good recipe? Sorry, I donāt. But I did see that King Arthur has a Tourtiere recipe up and also Gesine Bullock-Prado has one up on her website that looks good. My father is the tourtiere maker and he learned from my grandmother. I can remember he couldnāt get a recipe from her so he had her over to make them. The entire thing went along the lines of: Father: So how much potatoes grandmother: oh just enough to make it this consistency Father: so how much of this spice do you put in Grandmother: oh just enough to taste it. Father: so what ratio of pork to beef. grandmother: depends on what you have available etc, etc, etc, ETA: King Arthur Tourtiere recipe. Their potatoes look cubed but our family always grinds/mills them with the meat. Gesine Bullock-Prado This one is quite different from ours (potatoes, beef, pork, spices) but looks really good. I really like her recipes.

Mom was Italian, Dad was German. We had a lot of pasta or potato dumplings with sauerkraut at our house growing up! Do you guys remember a while back someone wrote a newspaper column for the NYT where they listed the alleged favorite regional dishes I believe for every state, and the moron had grape salad down for Minnesota. What the what? Sorry, NO, just no! In all my 50+ years I had never even heard of that abomination much less tasted it! ~link to story about the story~
I think it was last year when I was visiting friends from South Dakota, they had a bowl of it in their fridge and asked me if I wanted some. Not wanting to be rude, I said, āsuuure...ā Iāll just suffice it to say, I quite honestly never need to try it again because it was a pretty bad combination of flavors and textures. It was odd to say the least, and the first thought that popped into my head was, āWho *ever* thought to mix these particular ingredients together? Ugh.ā And because I know the rules, that this post is worthless without the recipe, here ya go:

The old travel books had Colorado in the Southwest, but that really doesn't seem right. Same here.. I was born in Missouri but moved to different areas of the US.. Missouri, Kansas, Tennessee, Louisiana, California and Colorado. But I consider myself Midwest mainly because I feel that is where I learned anything that I would consider lasting..driving, cooking, habits.. etc. But I 'think' this is Midwestern.... Pork Tenderloin sandwiches... YUMMY...
