Maybe the forest of red trees is a nod to their pals in Russia? The trees by the fireplace weren’t bad but I would have left off the gold eagle tree toppers. The eagle tree toppers are disconcerting. A little too "Reichsadler" for my taste. [ Are those the gold star family trees?

The red trees and Be Best accents are horrible. The rest is really pretty.

Looks like we may have found that Walk Away movement after all. the decor - ugh! Melania still hasn't figured out how to put her arms in coat sleeves, and why is she wearing a coat inside? Don't they heat the place for her. there is nothing classy about her at all..

The red trees are awful. The Be Best wreaths and ornaments are so ridiculous that I can't even believe they are real. The rest is actually very pretty. All of the gold touches remind me of some of their old family pictures in their gold plated apartmen.

red trees (I guess that's just going to be a spooky Xmas hallway forever now) and wreaths made of "Be Best" pencils (because she's not doing anything else with them). haha!! what ARE those red trees made out of, anyway? they don't look like pine boughs; just red clumps of *stuff* stuck into a tree-like shape. Apparently they took peoples' dislike of the white hallway to heart and waaaaay overdid it in the opposite direction. (maybe?) anyway, there are some GOOD comments here... thanks, guys, for making my back-to-work morning slump more amusing!! ETA: bits and pieces of each of the areas are nice, but there's no cohesive theme. Is that the way it usually is? Or is it just the way the video is making it look? I mean, really... beautifully-decorated trees, then wreaths made out of pencils? really?!? ETA2: the SKETCH of the red trees could be pretty, but the execution lacks something-- like light!! maybe if the trees had lights on, it wouldn't look quite so oppressive? And the eagle tree-topper looks a bit too much like it's *looming* overhead waiting to pounce (like Snoopy when he pretends to be a vulture). Dyed snufflupagus? Sesame Street is in mourning.

Beautiful! I love it. The brass ornaments and city scape are my favorite. Melania looks lovely too (as always).
My sister (a horticulturalist with Smithsonian) applied to help with the White House decorations this year but did not get selected. I think that would be so cool to be a part of putting it together.

As many times as she's worn a coat in warm weather, I've just always assumed she must be cold natured. With larger rooms like those, especially if it's drafty, the coat doesn't surprise me, but a cardigan would be a better choice unless she's actually heading outdoors before she goes back?
The red trees don't bother me, but wouldn't be my first choice either. Most Christmas decorations are pretty to me when they're lit. Slap some twinkling lights on an outhouse and it still looks cute. Lol

I like the cityscapes. They appear to be laser cut wood to me, but someone above mentioned gold, so I'm not sure. At any rate, I think they are interesting and different.
Is it possible the pencil wreath WAS actually made by children? Haven't children made decorations in the past?

She is so slimy it is hard for me to see anything past her. It is depressing to see her in the White House.

I love the city scapes. I have seen the WH decorated for Christmas before because a friend worked for the press corps.. they do an amazing job making it look festive and beautiful. The green traditional trees with the white lights are lush and gorgeous, I haven’t seen the red trees but in the pictures the red trees feel dominant and imposing and the green ones feel warm and inviting.

Yes, the red trees are not attractive (individually, as a whole, or in any environment) Heavy and oppressive.
I can appreciate the "Be Best" theme (even if it is a farce of a campaign), but the execution seems poor. If they had students make items from local schools or something, then it would be cute and relevant, but I really don't think that is the case.
Most everything else is pretty. Love the cityscapes. The one room looks a little too much like a "Christmas Tree Showroom." But, it might always look that way. I can't remember.
I find it painful to watch the first lady most of the time because she seems so uncomfortable and stiff. There are times when she seems more genuine and at ease and it isn't in the WH or with Trump. I am not sure if it is her hatred of the job, part of her natural demeanor or if it is the "look" they want for her (some rep/PR/person in charge of her thinks it looks sophisticated but it comes off unnatural and aloof). I am guessing it is a bit of it all.

Loved all the trees with white lights. The red trees are overpowering the hallway - the scale of the trees is too big...and way too many.
Why is she wearing her coat inside? Weird.
All in all, I think the volunteers that did all of the work did a great job (except for the red trees).

Emily C Singer...
“Melania's Christmas decorations look like they're straight out of the Shining”
Kind of does look like that when you think about it.
The red trees remind me of skirts of ball gowns which makes sense when you consider the person making the choices.
IMO what she did was bring “New York Sophistication” into the White House which is the people’s house.
What is missing is the whimsy that is associated with Christmas and appeals to the “child in all of us”.
Once you get rid of those ridiculous red trees and the half assed attempt with “Be Best” the decorations are pretty but more geared to adults than children.

The White House Christmas decor is lovely. The red trees could use some lights in my opinion. But overall it's beautiful.

Maybe they're getting ready for the Red Wedding? Most of the rest look really nice and reflect the hard work of all the volunteers. Any Be Best bologna is just that: junk lunch meat. I did think the mantle was pretty with the gold cityscape. But that wreath is trash. I liked the mantle. The rest not so much. The red trees were scary. It actually reminded me of The Handsmaid's Tale.

I might like the red trees better if they were made of something different - and had lights. I have no idea what the material is, but it's weird looking.

I don’t like the hallway full of red trees. I would like them more if there weren’t so many of them. And they are so big they take up most of the walking space. Maybe if they were interspersed with green trees? I like the green and gold with the blue accents. I could do without the “be best” shit. What a failed campaign. It’s like the word “fetch”. It’s never going to happen! Let it go!!!!
Why are there so many shots of Melania walking away from the camera and audience? Explain what I bolded, please. “Fetch” is never going to happen? Were there efforts? I.must.know. the line you’re drawing between these two things. LOL. (Sorry. Per usual, I perk up at word discussions. And for the record, the red trees seem jarring, but somebody took a risk, so there’s that. Maybe they read better in person. In answer to the “What are they made of?” question, I submit that they’re made of shredded secret documents from “Red China.” #recycle #reuse.)

It’s a play on a quote from the movie Mean Girls: “Regina George: Gretchen, stop trying to make fetch happen! It is probably a great opportunity for designers to showcase their ideas. I'd love the red trees if they had been decorated. The only thing that really stuck out of place was the Be Best wreath. As a teacher, I was like nooooooooooo! How could they waste those pencils? I can't tell you how many pencils I bought over the years because we ran out in April.

I just took a quick look down memory lane to previous decorations and first ladies.
As a whole, I will give Melania's WH decorations credit. They are very attractive with only a couple exceptions. They are sophisticated and well executed and more polished than many of the previous years (although most years there were definitely gorgeous and similar looks presented--just more diversity in looks). I didn't even hate the white hallway last year (I really think the red trees are way off though). But, of course there is a but....when looking at the last two years, they lack spirit. They are gorgeous and sterile. I think the Be Best tree is their attempt, this year, to add that layer of whimsy. Doesn't do it, but they tried. It says "Trump's" White House and not "The People's WH" (but at least it is Melania Trump WH decor and not Donald's tacky style)
Last years video was similar in that she never seems like she is REALLY interacting, but at least they showed her trying to interact with the common folk and she smiled a few times. This year's has such a weird vibe. "Watch me while I reflectively contemplate and inspect the work of my minions that occurred while I was away. Do not touch. Do not interact. Move along..."

I hate that shade of red against that shade of green carpet. The trees are berries and just too heavy and blah IMHO. Even a little open branches, a fairy lights, twigs, white or green foliage would have helped lighten this look. I can't even respond to the bebest wreaths.
