UPDATE: after leaving it that I would not have time to go downtown for this item, and that sending it to MN is illegal, tonight I received the following: I just can't even. Now I'm supposed to drive downtown to buy the stuff and then acquire packing materials to pack it like fine china, before standing in line at UPS to ship it. My response to her was that I was sorry, but as I'd mentioned, I am short on time this week, and that the store will certainly ship it for a fee of it can be legally done. *** ... and with whom you were never close, due to a large age difference, Facebook messages you out of the blue and asks you if you would help procure a particular liqueur that a friend of hers would like to give her husband for Christmas. State law prevents her from having the the liqueur shipped directly. She wants you to drive to the large liquor store downtown, where she has found via Google that this liqueur is sold, buy the liqueur, and ship it to her halfway across the country later this week (so it's in time for Christmas). She would presumably pay for the liqueur and shipping. How hard do you work to make this happen? If at all? We're talking an hour and a half spent going downtown to procure the liqueur (in rush hour traffic because you work full time and can only do this after 4) plus packaging the liqueur and shipping it next Saturday morning. I'm not sure if I'm being a grinch or if she's being ridiculous. Thoughts?

"Sorry, I'm really busy closing out the semester and just don't have the time to run downtown."
I think it's pretty darn presumptuous for anyone that you don't have a close relationship to ask for a favor that will take at least two hours out of your life and require you to deal with both city traffic and the post office at Christmas.

IF I had the time and IF she paid me up front for the booze and the shipping I would do it. Mainly because it's Christmas and the person receiving the gift will probably be thrilled to receive it.
And...she is being rediculous to ask.

I wouldn't do it and you are not being a Grinch. They would have lost me at "haven't seen in 12 years but WANTS....."

If state laws prevent the alcohol from being shipped directly, would you be doing anything illegal by shipping it to her yourself?

Honestly I would do it if it were semi convenient for me - just for the novelty of it and to do her a favor. If I were working 60 hour weeks and super busy —I would not.

Also, she's being totally ridiculous -- and the FB message better have been very beggy and have included lots of nice things about you and your kids/family.

How about she orders it and has it delivered to you. When it gets to you it is already packaged and you just have to send it the rest of the way. Of course two things to consider- Do you or someone over 21 have to be there to sign for it, and is that a problem? Does the state law also prohibit you from sending it across the border or just the distributor?

I'm fairly certain it's OK for me to ship it as a gift. It's not OK to sell liquor across state lines in some states so that's why it's not ok to ship.

Can't ship alcohol through the post office at all. They won't ship it. Also from that article:

I remember when I shipped a package a few weeks ago that I had to say it was NOT alcohol! They knew that, it was a very flat package but I do remember NO alcohol. Glad you got your out!

You, like someone else said you can’t legally ship alcohol. I actually just found this out because I was wanting to ship some hard cider to my MIL in a different state.

where does this person live that they can't get it locally-ish? Rural Minnesota. She says no distributors for this particular thing in the Twin Cities area. I gather she Googled and Spec's came up as a distributor. But only the Smith St. location downtown actually carries it.

I'm just curious to know where she lives, what the liqueur is and why she can't buy it in her own state.
The only thing I can think of is that it is absinthe.

Not going to type out the name because I don't want this thread to appear in her next Google search. 🙄 I guess it's something that's not widely carried in the US.

Nope! Just hi, would you be able to do this thing for my friend you've never met. 😂 That and the legality would earn a hard no from me. "Sorry, the PO & UPS & FedEx here told me I can't ship liquor to you." If she comes back with internet info saying it's A-OK, just repeat that your local shippers won't do it.

My sibs in Texas (Dallas area) can't get their hands on Whisper Creek Tennessee Sipping Whiskey. It's nothing extraordinary and not expensive, but we all met up at a cycling event in TN a while back and had some in hot chocolate and it was delicious. I looked into sending them some and it wasn't possible.
There are some wines I can't buy in or get shipped to Ohio.
It has to do with protecting in-state business and that sort of thing. I do't know the details, but when I asked an online wine merchant why I couldn't have one of their wines sent to Ohio, that's what I was told.

I see you have your 'out' but I'm assuming she did the googling thing and assumed it'd be easy/nearby/convenient for you to pop into town to the store and get it. She maybe doesn't realise that it's an hour or so drive away maybe? Anyway, you have your answer and that's good

Why doesn't she just contact a store in a state that IS allowed to ship it to her?
