I don’t get it. Does cat food and cat spit permanently adhere to dishes?!?! Apparently it does

No, but mostly because there is so much food that is dangerous for them. It is more about pet safety then a ridiculous fear of cat cooties. My husband does share his otter pops with one of our cats, she only gets a few licks because of sugar, but go ahead and judge all you want! I do let them occasionally lick a yogurt spoon if one of the cats happen to be handy when I am eating plain yogurt. haha!! our dogs KNOW the sound of me tearing the foil top off of a yogurt cup, now... they each get their own little lick of yogurt (off my finger). I've also let them have a lick or two of a popsicle while I'm eating a fruit pop, and sometimes, they get ONE piece of popcorn each-- gotta be fair, and give one to each dog. I've also let the cats drink milk out of my glass before, too- more for the entertainment value of them trying to get their head into the glass, lol! (but that's a bad habit to get into, because then whenever I have milk, I also have a cat sitting on the chair hanging over my shoulder like a vulture.) Ours is the bread bag. Dh gives them the bread ends so every.flippin.time. the bread is open they come racing into the kitchen <sigh>
My dog gets yogurt for the probiotics so he has his own large container of greek yogurt Dang that dog is spoiled!

Let? No. But he sure as hell tries, especially when I'm loading the dishwasher. I attempt to discourage it because he also tends to nose around when I'm unloading the clean dishes and that grosses me out, so I end up having rewash anything he's touched All that said, he does get far more people food than I really care for but we don't feed him from the table, he has to wait till we're done eating. Except for popcorn and pizza crusts, he has decided that those are his and will freak out running in circles as soon as the popcorn popper comes out (or I open the bag to go in the microwave). Pizza he'll sit there and watch dh or ds eat just waiting for the crust to finally come his way, he's not as bad with me because I rarely actually give in.

It's not a big deal to me. The dishes go through the dishwasher and we always run the extra sanitation cycle so we're good. Pretty much the only time the dog has access to a plate is in the morning after I've had my english muffin. There is usually some melted butter left and he loves that! He waits patiently beside my desk chair until I set the plate down for him. If he was pushy or rude about it, then he wouldn't get any! Everything that goes through the dishwasher gets sanitized, and I don't see how dog spit is more gross than people spit, so whatever. If you're grossed out, you're not invited for dinner! 😂 I'm not grossed out. What time should I be there for dinner? Should I bring red or white wine?

I’ve been preoccupied lately RE: keeping the spreadsheet, but it would be interesting to compare which Peas let their sloppy little children kiss them directly on the mouths vs. who wouldn’t eat off a dish that a dog licked that has been through the dishwasher cleaned with detergent and water heated to over 120°. Kids are just as gross as pets IMO. Hahaha this made me laugh too much to even feign outrage that you called my kids "sloppy little children" !!! And for the record, I responded in the affirmative to both polls - yes my sloppy children kissed me on the lips when they were little, and yes my dog licks my plates clean on occasion.

Crazy4scraps, Yes, she sure does. Her name is Velly Bee and she's a member of the family. Pet skunks are descended as babies but need spaying/neutered at 6 months. Can we see pics of Velly Bee? Or have you already shared some?

I was thinking the little toddlers and such that kiss with their mouth open because they don't know how to do it yet. The recognizing pea thread brought up peaing in the shower. I wonder if that correlates to dog or child slobber.

I would not let an animal lick the dishes. If I were giving a pet leftovers or something, it would go in their bowl or on a paper plate.

I get grossed out at a lot but oddly, this registers very low on my radar. My dog will lick plates on occasion. She really doesn't get table food. Maybe she gets a plate of some tiny scraps like once every 4-5 months? This is not nightly. HOWEVER....! I always joke that one of her favorite activities is licking the plates as I try to load the dishwasher. I always say she's going to be sorry one day when she gets a knife.

I'm kind of grossed out by it BUT I admit that's really weird of me, because I put the pet dishes in the dishwasher and I know they get sanitized in there.
But I cannot handle the peas who put the toilet brush in there, or who pee in the shower. I also don't like the dog licking me and most definitely not on the face. Blecccch

When the original thread was going, and now, we were living in Korea. No garbage disposals, have to scrape plates into food waste containers and they are picked up. Compost isn’t really an option as urban apt living. My housekeeper saw me scraping the plates and then rinsing them to get everything off (sinks have a food trap that needs to be emptied too) and then loading them into the dishwasher. At the time we had a Lab, and she scolded me up one side and down the other for wasting water and not having Cleo clean them And when I thought about it- she was super right! The dishwashers here are craptastic, dishes must be pretty spotless before going in or it gets clogged up and the food baked on if we use the dry cycle. Now I only let my big mix dog do it, the little white fluffy and the border collie have food allergies. And not all the time, because I don’t always remember and it’s faster to just rinse them in water than to call Lola (dogs are generally not to be in the kitchen though that does not always stick!). But CMON PEOPLE! You have never cleaned out the fridge, had a dish with green mold on it, and put it in the dishwasher? Cut chicken and washed the cutting board? Marinated raw beef and put the glass dish in? Just imagine the germs possibilities there. How in the world could dog saliva be somehow worse than any of those?

I wash ours daily, the water bowl maybe weekly. Would you use all separate dish cloths/scrubbers? Bleach your sink afterwards? Do you not prep any meat for you to eat?

I have a St. Bernard, and we have to train the shit out of a dog that size so that food on our counters and coffee tables is safe. He doesn’t go near it, even when left unattended. I’m just trying to imagine the chaos that would ensue if we gave him people food or let him lick the plates.
So, I guess I have a follow-up question, that I’ll be asking in another poll.

That is beyond disgusting. That's quite a visceral reaction.
I don't find it gross as much as I do find it probably bad for training and dog manners.

Only you would know if your kids fit that description. My own kid was a sloppy kisser (well, pretty sloppy in general when she was little) and I wouldn’t generally kiss her on the lips but I would eat off of a dog licked plate that was sanitized in the dishwasher. That’s why I’m curious! FTR I don’t let my dog lick me on my face either if I can help it!

Absolutely not. I can't stand animals that beg for people food, so I don't give any of my pets scraps of any kind.

yes, and we often joke it is clean enough to put back in the cupboard. Right? There is not a skerrick of food left on the plate after the dog has licked it clean. I could easily let the dog spit dry and put the plate back in the cupboard and no-one would be any the wiser. RELAX people, I would never actually do that! I've actually just grossed myself out.

I can't answer for psiluvu, but yes, we have a separate sponge for washing the cat/dog dishes and wash them in the garage utility sink, not the kitchen sink. They do NOT go in the dishwasher. Ever. And while I don't exactly want to use the words 'gross' or 'revolting' in regards to pets licking dishes or them being washed in the dishwasher, I do find it icky. I will admit to being totally gagged at the thought of the same sponge/dishcloth being used for pet dishes as for human dishes, though. That goes way too far for me. Sorry.

My in-laws had “special” bowls for the cat stored in the cupboard with all their other dishware. I used one to eat cereal and they were appalled that I ate out of the animal bowl. First of all, they are all the same corelle dishes in the same cupboard, how would I possibly know the difference? Secondly they were clean. I don’t get it. Does cat food and cat spit permanently adhere to dishes?!?! Logically, I understand this. But I still find it gross! I have no idea why. I keep the dishes I use to mix dog food separate, and I wash them separately. Pointless, I know.

I have a sponge I use for my dog bowls, and I use bleach spray liberally when I wash them. And yes, I spray and scrub the sink after. I do the same after I've prepped meat for cooking. I have a stainless steel cutting board and I love bleach spray.

How often do you change your dishcloth/sponge? The dogs’ bowls were always the last thing handwashed. I use cloths. Find sponges disgusting. A clean cloth is always used for a fresh sink full of dishwater. They are never reused. As for the dishwasher, hot water and detergent is killing all sorts of things from viruses, raw meat yuck, raw eggs...it can handle dog and cat germs too. It made my life tons easier when I bought the dogs dishwasher safe bowls.
