But some people do let their kids do all kind of ill behaved things too! yeah- I don't think letting our dogs lick our hand or face is nearly as ill-mannered as some random kid racing up and down the aisles of the grocery store, but I'm biased, I guess- lol. Plus, the licking is sort of a 'bonding' experience-- for the dogs, at least, lol. (also an anxiety-soothing activity, but that's another issue altogether.)

No, I would not. But, I'm a stickler for good dog behavior and allowing plate licking (or really any kind of licking on a person or a person's things) is rude dog behavior. My dog gets whatever he eats in his own bowl. That way he's not begging at the table, standing in the dishwasher (that's TERRIBLE dog behavior) or counter surfing. I'm always amazed at what people will let their dogs get away with. If you wouldn't let your kid do it, then don't let your dog do it. Well, I would make the dog use a fork or spoon, but the lack of opposable thumbs is an issue. My son doesn’t hesitate to eat wherever is left on my plate if I don’t want it so there is that, but he does use a utensil unless it’s the beater from the mixer.

I have a St. Bernard, and we have to train the shit out of a dog that size so that food on our counters and coffee tables is safe. He doesn’t go near it, even when left unattended. I’m just trying to imagine the chaos that would ensue if we gave him people food or let him lick the plates. So, I guess I have a follow-up question, that I’ll be asking in another poll. We have a mix. She half Mastiff, quarter St Bernard and quarter Newfoundland. You can imagine how big she is. She’s also a big baby and super easy to train. She regularly get bits of people food but will go lay down when told to or leave food when told to. I don’t think we’ve let her lick a plate but she just doesn’t bother anything unless she’s given permission

Absolutely not. I can't stand animals that beg for people food, so I don't give any of my pets scraps of any kind. OK, but how do you wash their dishes? I have bright colored dishes with cute patterns for my cats. They aren't dishwasher safe and they get washed by hand.

I voted yes but we really don't let her do it very much at all. Sometimes on a holiday, we'll let her have a bit of ice cream and I think that's about it. But I wouldn't be adverse to her doing it if there was something I thought was OK for her.

Sometimes. Not all the time...like if there's a particularly gravy-ful meal or something...yeah. Otherwise, we make a plate full of leftover meat etc just for them and split it between their two bowls.

I said no, because not all people food is safe for dogs and cats.

On occasion my spoiled baby gets to lick plates. I limit the amount of people food he gets, but I do give him cheese. He can hear a bag of cheese being opened in any room in the house.

This topic was discussed and dissected for approximately 18 pages on the original 2peas board. It was a legendary conversation.
This is why I don’t enjoy eating in other people’s homes. While a home dishwasher does get things clean, it does not sanitize. I would buy new dishes monthly if I could. Stating that one washes the dog and cat dishes in the dishwasher is something I just can’t fathom. There’s a reason we do not have in-home pets. (The horse lives on the farm.)
