Do your kids (or you) have a significantly different first name and nick name? Care to share?
These are mine...
Alexandria (Ally), called Beans
Benjamin (Ben), called Pork
Yes, my kids are Pork & Beans. TOTALLY not on purpose! DH noticed it when the boy was 2.

No nicknames in our immediate family. We gave a DD a pretty (and long) name and discouraged nicknames from the get-go. I didn't want her given name to not be used. That was my reaction to having short name that I never liked (mom didn't believe in nicknames having lived with one her entire life). My oldest niece has a nickname I gave her when she was little (I didn't care for her name) that is still used by family 35 years later. The nickname actually suits her and is a diminutive of her actual name.

I shorten DD1's name but she doesn't have a nickname. DD2's name is too short to shorten but I do sometimes still call her bubbles. We used to call her this when she was tiny but I have no idea why, it was just one of those names that came out of the blue one day and it stuck. It's only me DH and her sister that do though, no one else.
I assume that Alexandria is a boy, yes? I've never seen it spelt like that, In the UK it's usually Alexander for a boy and Alexandra for a girl. Alexandria to us is the town in Egypt.

All the Alexandria's that I've known have been girls. It was pretty popular when DD was born in the 80's. It made my list but DH vetoed it. Most of the girls we know go by Alex (which is why DH didn't like it.)

I grew up with a nickname for my given name. I hated it. It's not a bad name persay and it suits me fine, but people always assume that my given name is something else. My ex-husband goes by a nickname too and people often addressed mail to a proper name that was incorrect. So we were very particular when we named our kids to give them names that couldn't be shortened and had no nicknames. I had no desire to pick a beautiful name for my child and then not use it.

Funny story. When Jeremy and I got married, his youngest child was 4. I got our marriage license in the mail and I made a comment about how I could now go change my name. The little one piped right up and said, I think you should choose Stephanie. We all laughed super hard and sometimes just as a joke, they will call me Stephanie.

A coworker calls her dd Bean. Of course now whenever I see her I can't remember her real name. Is it weird to call someone else's college age child Bean? Asking for a friend....

I am amazed how opionated people are about other’s names (for the record, I am super guilty of this -especially creative spelling). My son is Charles III. We have a Charles and a Charlie and I couldn’t picture myself calling a newborn Chuck. So he is Casey. People try to tell him all the time that Casey isn’t a nickname for Charles. His response? “My mom says it is.”

At an old job, I went by Samantha even though my name is Christine. It started out as a joke with one of my co-workers and it stuck. A couple of my other co-workers called me Samantha also.

My youngest was born at home and when he was but a few minutes old, we introduced him to his 3yo brother using his first/middle name: Shaun Michael.
When our 3yo tried to say it, it came out 'Machoo' and that's been youngest DS' name ever since.
He's 21yo now and has actually looked into getting his name legally changed but the cost is a bit prohibitive for him right now.
ETA: The then 3yo's (now 23yo) nickname is Doodlebug/Doo because his favorite toy as a kid was a Magna Doodle. He would actually sleep with it.

Younger son is called Bug. Our daughter was called “the bug” for years. When she entered Jr High all her school and sports friends started calling her a shortened version of our last name. The same with my DH. I share their last name, but no one has ever called me that. I have an ugly, guttural first name I hate. I’ve had so many people over the years tell me I don’t look like a “xxxxxx”. I prefer my middle name (which was supposed to have been my first name - but that’s a whole ‘nother thread )

At an old job, I went by Samantha even though my name is Christine. It started out as a joke with one of my co-workers and it stuck. A couple of my other co-workers called me Samantha also. Haha. My name is Andrea. NO ONE calls me that except my neighbors. At work people call me Adrienne or Angela and my family calls me Ann or Annie. People from my youth call me Red (I am still a redhead, but I get a little help!). My Swiss family pronounces my name with an accent "Ohn-Dray-Uh." I introduce myself: Hi. I am Andrea. People respond "Hi Angela/Angie/Adrienne." Hence the running joke at work. I wanted my kids to have a long name and a nickname. The girls use nicknames, but my son does not. He gets called Red a lot as well. I call him Boo. He had a lot of boo-boos growing up. Very big feet that it took him a while to grow into. Until then, he tripped a lot! I wanted to call my son Sebastian, but I was overruled. I would have then called him Bash. I still feel a bit sad about that.

They're two different names, it's not just a different spelling. Like Diane is not Diana, Alexandra and Alexandria are different. Both are fairly common and usually get shortened to Alex or Lexi.

My name is Virginia, but I’ve always been called “Ginny.” I have never liked having a nickname.
My daughter is Patricia and her friends in high school called her “Patty” but she dropped that in college.
My son is Thomas, Jr. His dad goes by Tom, so we’ve always called him Thomas. (I didn’t want him to be a “Tommy” as an adult). His friends combined his first and last name and gave him a nickname that sounds like a dinosaur. In retrospect, Tommy would have been better. 😀😀😀

DH has a long Spanish name that we shorten to a little, 2 letter abbreviation. I actually don't like the nickname and he doesn't love it but it's just easier! It's also too late - everyone calls him that now.

My mom calls me Toots all the time. It’s shortened over the years from Tootsie Toy. Santa even marks my tags that. So much so that my nieces know when they see the tags. My name is Kelly, so I don’t know how she go that.
My Brother is Bo, shortened from Timbo (his name is Tim). he’s also Bo Jones a lot.
My kids don’t have anything super specific for nicknames that we use. Sometimes I just say Boy or Girl. So I kind of chuckled last night when I was watching Bird Box.

I don't have one. I occasionally call my oldest Kee. As a child she had friends who couldn't pronounce her name and a beloved preschool tea he'd started calling her Kiki to make it easier. My youngest is Alanna and I sometimes call her Lanabelle.
DH however uses his nickname 100%. He's a Wayne Jr and his dad is called Wayne, so to avoid confusion his parents referred to him as Russ, which was his dad's nickname in the Army (our last name is Russell). DH wont answer to Wayne because it doesn't even register with him. Even in the doctor's office they often have to call him twice. 🙄

We live in small farming community.. my son has a very popular name for his age... like all the Aidens of today... so there were 6 guys on a 14 guy football team (we play 6 man football here)
So anyway they all got nicknames and for jr and high school my son was Kumar... is in harold n kumar... his bff was harold.... even some of the teachers called him kumar... weird
So if he randomly sees someone he went to school with he still gets called that... lol

DS1 goes by a nickname the is short for his name. Everybody uses it. His full name is rarely used.
DS2 has a camp nickname. It is only used by people with whom he attended summer camp - and many of them don't even know his real name. At home he is always his relatively short full name.
DD has a series of nicknames from when she was little but I am really the only one who uses them. Everyone else uses her full name.
