I keep having the same conversation with a friend of mine. My dd only has 3 weeks at Christmas while her dd has 6 weeks off. I only remember 6 week breaks when I was in college and am wondering what your school gives off for the winter break. We both agree that 6 weeks is way too long if you are going to sit on your butt and do nothing. She thinks Vassar's 6 week break is unusual. I have told her it isn't.
How long is your kids/your break?

Both my kids had about 3 weeks off. My college had a 6 week break, but they had it set up like an optional mini-semester, with lots of fun mini classes (glass blowing, star gazing, cooking).

I had just over 2 weeks off. I only had one class the 2nd half of the last semester (online courses only go 8 weeks at this school) and the final assignment was due on the 19th. Next semester starts Monday, the 7th.

My oldest does not start back until mid January. It’s been nice for her, worked a lot. Me not so much as I am stuck watching her terrible dog when she works

Where I went to college was on a quarter system, so break was 3 or 4 weeks. Spring was only a week though. Started mid late Sept and ended mid June. 10 weeks per quarter

Our state schools here have a five-week break, I think - same as it was when I was in college back in the day. I definitely wasn't allowed to sit around all that time, though - I either did temporary jobs or went back to my previous summer job as a seasonal employee.

DD came home December 8th and classes don't start again until Jan 22nd. The university has a mini winter semester that many take advantage of, especially the international students.
DD has to go back early for her campus job, so she leaves sometime next week. Then I will be sad.

I have 2 kids in college. DD has 4 weeks off and goes back mid-January. DS has 6 weeks off and goes back the first week of February, but his school also offers a J-Term. It’s a 4 week semester where they take the same class each day, usually about 3 hours long. He took an English class one year and a study abroad class last year, but this year he decided to take the month off to apply to grad school and look for jobs. He’s a senior and only needs engineering classes now, which are almost impossible to take in one semester because of labs and the time spent outside of class with homework, so none are offered.

Depends on how the exams fall, but I've never heard of a 6-week winter break. My son was done on the 16th (yes, he had an exam on a Sunday) so he has 3 weeks.

My kid is in a small liberal arts school and has 4 weeks off. My guess is that the schools with longer breaks are offering mini-mesters.
Most of the college kids I know work in some capacity over the break. My DD has been very lucky to have a job since high school that she can just walk back into over summers and breaks.

Three weeks for mine. She'll fly back to school on Sunday. I'm envious of you with kids who are home longer!

My daughter gets 4 weeks off, but her university does Greek recruitment in the January, so she goes back a week early for that.
I do have a staff member who works for me during the holidays when he's home from college. His winter break runs from Thanksgiving until Jan. 7. They are on the quarter system, though. They start right after Labor Day and fit in 1 quarter before Thanksgiving. They then have 2 quarters in winter/spring, starting early Jan. and not ending until mid-June. Kids can take a 4th quarter over the summer if they wish.

DS was done 12/14. We picked him up 12/16 and he goes back 1/20. This year the long break is helpful because he's having a dental implant which needs 2 weeks of healing before the follow up appointment.

Four weeks for dd. She tried to go back to her summer job (cashier at Ulta) but they didn’t end up needing extra seasonal help.
She’s been writing a lot of music and working on a few assignments for next semester.

My break was 5 weeks, and my brother in law, who attends my alma mater, still has 5 weeks this year as well.

I went to a school with a quarter system, so we went back to school right after the new year. Our break was about 3 weeks. My sons went to colleges with a regular schedule so they didn’t start back until almost the end of January, so 5-6 weeks of break.

Three weeks here. But last year it was only two weeks. Not sure what normal is at this university since this is only his second year.

I have three (!) kids in college this year. Two in state schools (same state) with different breaks!
One has 3 weeks off (private school) One has 3 weeks off (state school) One has 5 weeks off (state school)
Those are the schools' scheduled breaks. One of mine was finished with finals the first week of December (the 5-week break one) which added 3 weeks to her break. But she worked until the 20th so didn't get it all.
I got 11 straight days off. I was beside myself with joy. But I had to use my vacation days and weekends and holidays to get to 11.
ETA: Not ONE of them has the same spring break on top of it all!!
Fortunately, the two who graduate this year graduate 2 days apart. PHEW!

My daughter that is a senior in undergrad got 5 weeks this year. When her sisters were there getting their undergrads, they got 4 weeks. My daughter in med school gets 4 weeks BUT this is the first year they have done that. In the past, they only got 2 weeks. This was her last Christmas break as she won't get anymore in med school. And for me, I always thought I got 4 weeks but truthfully I don't remember (early 80s). I just know that I would fly home to Europe to be with family but don't think I got 6 weeks.

My youngest (DS) doesn't go back until February. Crazy, right?!
But he is taking a "winterim" class. It's a mini semester so the actual class is 3 days a week but longer hours per day. (3+?)
DD school has a winterim too but shorter. Regular classes begin a bit earlier (jan 20-soemthing?)

DS is only home for 3 weeks, he heads back this weekend and starts classes on Monday. He is at a very large public university.

My dd is December 22 to January 28. Her school has a "J term" (January term) which allows kids to travel, take courses etc... and that happens during those weeks off.
OP - how does your friend's child like Vassar? It's top of my dd4's list.
