Thirteen are closing in my state. I used to buy my children's clothes there all the time in the early to mid 2000's. Every spring I'd buy a few t-shirts for the season for me. It's changed over the years to be overpriced and not much better quality (or worse) than Target or Walmart.

That's a shame. There are very few stores left in my parent's small town. It would be a huge blow to lose their Shopko. Luckily it's safe for now.

I remember Shopko stores in Reno when we lived there briefly during the early 90's. I thought they were very much like a Target on the lower end side. I hate hearing that another company is folding or potentially so.

I used to love Shopko. I couldn't begin to tell you just how much of my wardrobe and Christmas presents ended up on layaway there when I was growing up. But it has been like it couldn't decide if it wanted to be like WalMart or Target and therefore settled on being the worst of both. Honestly it seemed to me like it went downhill about the time they changed from the red logo.

I've wondered for years how the Shopko near me has stayed in business. There's never more than one cashier lane open at a time, no matter how many customers they might have waiting. Of course, there are rarely very many customers. Sure enough, my local Shopko is on the list for closing.

The ones by me are closing. I’m not surprised. Their stores are old, nothing new or worth it to go there. I go to their eye care place though (appt is tomorrow) so I’ll have to find a new eye doc

Of course, there are rarely very many customers. Sure enough, my local Shopko is on the list for closing. Lately when I've been in there, they don't even have a lane open. They turn on a light and put up a sign that says check out at the service desk. So mine is closing, too, and I can't say that I'm surprised. But I am annoyed, because that's where I get my socks. LOL. They'd already sent out their pharmacy customers to Hy-Vee a couple of weeks ago. (Corporate only gave the pharmacy a week's notice.) I was mad at that, mostly for not being given notice or a choice, but it turns out that HyVee stocks the generics I like, so, well, I guess I stay at HyVee. (Would have preferred to be able to go to my CVS but turns out they're not in my network.) But I have to agree with refugeepea that they've gotten quite expensive. On the one hand, they're kind of doing the JCPenney/Kohl's thing of marking it all up just to put it on sale. But they are also just clueless on some things-- the same hand soaps I can get at Michael's and Joann's for $1 or $1.50 are marked $3.99, so even at 50% off, they're still $2 at Shopko. I did, however, go order four extra boxes of contact lenses, just to have a stockpile.

I guess they had some success with that store model. I just had an exam a couple of weeks ago, too, so at least my prescription's good for a while before I have to find someone new.

I read they were going to be increasing prices of things and then ‘clearancing’ them out, so be careful

Not surprised.
First: They play crappy hard rock music at the store here.
Second: their stuff is junk.
Third: loyality card. I hate shopping at places with loyality cards.

We have two large-ish stores in our town, but we also have two Walmart and Target stores. I rarely shop at Shopko because it seems that the selection and price is higher than Walmart or Target.
In many small towns here and in Iowa, where my parents live, the main store to shop at is a hometown Shopko (smaller version of the store). In my stepmom's town, they also have a KMart that has been there forever. Both the KMart and Shopko have announced they are closing. That will leave very few options for people to get needed items in town. I think part of it is that a lot of people do a majority of their shopping in bigger towns that do have a Walmart, or they shop online. They are upset that the stores are closing, but probably should have done more shopping there to keep the stores. The comments online make it sound like people think stores should stay open for the good of the community, not the other way around.
ETA that I just looked at the list and am surprised that they aren't closing either of the stores here. It seems like the stores in towns with less competition would be more successful, but I guess not since the population base is also smaller.

The parking lot is fuller than it has been in a long time, since people think they are getting great deals. But in reality they are probably paying close to the original price on things. If only they had shopped there to begin with...

I'm bummed because my son really liked the Shopko eye doc he sees.

Oh that's too bad we aren't huge Shopko shoppers when we go to the states but I usually find something at their store to buy not clothing.

Wow, that takes me way, way back. We used to shop at Shopko when we lived in Idaho in the mid-90s. I'm kind of amazed they're still around, frankly!

I thought I was safe because my Pick N Save doesn't have a pharmacy. LOL.

I read they were going to be increasing prices of things and then ‘clearancing’ them out, so be careful This is exactly what they did when they closed ours several years ago. People were swarming the store thinking they were getting good deals! They marked their TVs up so much that even when they were 75% off, you could still buy them cheaper elsewhere. If a store like Shopko can't survive in my small town then you know it's a bad business plan. We are at least 30 minutes from a Walmart here and people were still driving to go to Walmart because it was cheaper than staying here and buying at Shopko. When they first opened, the prices were great and I was happy to shop there. The longer it was open, the higher the prices got. I hated that they closed ours because we needed the jobs here. And it had the potential to be great but instead they kept raising prices. Most people ended up shopping there as a last resort.

Not sorry to see them go.
I had first hand experience of them marking up prices right before merch went on advertised sale just to give a false "sale".
Also had first hand experience of end cap signage for sales mysteriously disappearing when I contested the scanned price, cashier called the manager and I went back to look. Happened enough times that my dh stood by the end cap only to watch a manager race to the end cap to remove the sign before I got there. Complained to the state AG's office and was told my complaint on the practice was "one of many on this issue at Shopko". I believe they were eventually fined for it.
So while I feel bad for the staff losing their jobs, I don't feel bad that such a crappy company with policies and practices designed to rip off the consumer is going under.

My experience is the same as others here. They used to have quite nice, Target-quality clothing. They changed about 10 years ago, I guess, and the stuff is not worth taking home. Ours here still sells athletic shoes at good prices, so I buy new running shoes here often.

I have never heard of them so had to look them up. Looks like they only have one California store way up in No. Cal. Our Kmarts closed up quite awhile ago.

Yes, definitely doing the JC Penney/Kohls thing but failing. I'll occasionally check the clearance clothes section. I typically don't buy until it's marked down at least 50%.
I noticed Ghirardelli peppermint bark on clearance this week for $5.39 a bag. My husband found some on clearance for $2.50 (I think it was Walmart).
