Exactly. When in the past has this been done? Were people taking Bush or Obama flags to sporting events? Why are they now taking Trump flags? One reason - to "own" the libs, to "trigger" the minorities, etc. It's this idea that you MUST put people in their place. In the past, it was entirely possible to attend a sporting event without having someone decide that they needed to force you to do something. You could buy a cup of coffee without someone saying "yeah, you need to say Merry Christmas to me or I'm gonna be mad." It's coffee in a red cup. It's a basketball game. Buy the coffee and drink it - or don't. Go to the tournament and play - or don't. The thing to always remember is that the people who believe this way and think that this is the right thing to do are outnumbered. How do you know? Companies like Gilette are making ads calling for kindness, civility, etc. and pushing back against these beliefs. That means that their marketing department did research and found that the potential to sell more product was better with THIS message than a different message. It's calculated - they did the math and found that the numbers were on the side that wasn't wearing MAGA hats. Have you seen a single commercial (other than Trumpy bear type things) where the MAGA message or the build the wall message has been used to sell products? Even one? Compare that to the number of companies who have come out publicly as opposing those messages. I think because the predominantly black team sits out the National Anthem in the locker room at every game, which, let's face it, most people see as a political stand since President Trump is against it, the kids decided to show their support of President Trump. You can't let one team choose a political stand and not the other one. You can, that’s the beauty of free speech.

The boys who sit out the anthem are protesting injustice regardless of what Trump has tried to make it into. The boys who wear the MAGA hats and carry the Trump banner are protesting what, exactly? Blackness? Not just President Trump making it into something; without the Media the kneeling would have gone no where. The boys wearing the MAGA hats and carrying the Trump banner are not protesting; they're showing their support of President Trump. Just like the black boys in the locker room are showing their support of black issues by sitting out the National Anthem of the country they live in. I beg to differ—it gained momentum and was shouted out by trump

Sorry, totally disagree. Never in the history of our country has any protest around the flag been seen as an insult to the president himself. Only in Trump's messed up head. Sitting out the anthem is not general support of black issues; it's a protest of a specific injustice toward black youth. So on the one hand you have kids protesting a specific injustice, and other the other hand you have a raucous, jeering crowd set to intimidate and demean. I don't see that as equivalent at all. I never said the protest of the flag was an insult to President Trump. Where did you get that from ? The boys are showing support for their President and the black boys are showing their support for, as you say, “specific injustice toward black youth”. Both politically charged issues. By the way, I bet neither group could state why they supported Trump or what are the specific injustices they themselves have suffered. All these things are pushed by the media, parents and coaches/teachers. Not really... Trump banners at a school function= political issues “Black boys” speaking out against injustice against their race = civil rights and humanitarian issues. NOT. THE. SAME.

I'm stuck here.. The boys are showing support for their President and the black boys are showing their support for, as you say, “specific injustice toward black youth”. I don't have ANYTHING nice to say in response to what you've typed, so for now I will not say anything. Actually “merge” stated “specific injustice toward black youth”. And it was YOU who claimed that they were both POLITICAL issues

Do you think that the black students would be unable to come up with specific instances in which white supremacy affected them? That is the purpose of the protest when the national anthem is sung/played; America is not the land of the free for everyone. Also, while I have never experienced the specific injustices related to white supremacy, I would still feel comfortable participating in a protest against it. Many white folks participated in the March on Washington, even though they did not suffer racial injustice. Liberation is for everyone. I am sure that the students who support Trump could come up with their reasons. I'm not sure they'd admit them to everyone, though. In my mind, freedom and equality for all isn't a "politically charged issue" or a partisan issue. It's what's right for human beings. If a political party is against that, they're immoral. I’ve watched news coverage of various demonstrations and when asked what they have to say, most of them look like a “deer in the headlights”. I’m sure both these groups would be the same if asked. I doubt that very much. I believe that if you asked a group of white privileged youth why they were sporting the maga gear and chanting trump’s catch phrase of the day, the majority would be flustered or recite propaganda talking points. If you asked a group of black boys why they were protesting injustices they experience as black youth, I’d bet a years worth of paychecks that the majority of them would give you very concrete and factual reasons.

I would love for a news reporter to interview those black boys and hear about the injustices they face everyday. Are you serious? You're aware you typed that out loud aren't you? Exactly. I was going to respond but I promised myself I wouldn’t. Garbage and her words are what’s wrong with a lot of the apologists—take your pick—white privileged, trump et al, conservatives, Republicans...

I would say that in addition to supporting Trump, the boys are supporting his racist policies and ideals. And using his tactics of fear, intimidation, and taunting to do so. And the black boys are hiding in the locker room for what purpose ? I’m sure they don’t know but I’m sure you know what they think too. Unbelievable. Truly unbelievable.

those specific boys? Not yet but damn, how many young black people have to be speak out about the racism they face daily before your satisfied? I can’t believe you actually need to ask? Seriously? Yes, very seriously. Some people just follow the leader and have no concept what they’re really representing. Kinda like your ignorance right?

Why is it "the boys" and "the black boys?" That speaks volumes.
Here's the thing, I get that the rural school might be upset or annoyed or whatever about the players not being out on the court for the anthem. I live in an area like that and it definitely would not go over well here. This is Trump country. But the Trump banner, I hope, would not happen here.
I could see a lot of patriotic or flag based clothing as a counter if the student body knew the other team was going to sit out the anthem, but that would require planning and our students don't really have that in them. I think there was an adult that planted the idea in their heads.

Shortly before Christmas the Mpls Roosevelt team played the school where my daughter attends. They've been on our roster for a while. They traveled 3+ hours to play a game in a rural area on a Saturday. It's a very white area, but I would not say it's Trump country. Democrats do well in elections here. We were sitting in the middle of the gym and we turned toward the flag during the anthem, so we didn't even notice the team exit the gym, nor did we notice when the team came back in. If you were sitting in an area where you could see the entire gym during the anthem you would notice it. It wasn't until about a week later when we were with some of our friends who were at the game that it was brought up. It was brought up in more of a "This was the first time we've seen it" kind of way. I'm sure there had to have been people at the game who were bothered by it, but it was a pretty full gym and I heard nothing at the game. So if they were bothered, they simply went on with watching the game.
We enjoyed the game. They beat us, but our team played well and it was an enjoyable way to spend an afternoon. It seems crazy to me that I happened to watch this team from Mpls play not that long ago considering we live so far from them. People in the community of Jordan have not come across well at all. I read in the Star Trib that their team was supposed to play in a tournament hosted by the Roosevelt school today and they decided not to attend. The coach from the team they were supposed to play was pissed. The Jordan school has a real issue to deal with. A lot of their people suck as human beings.
