I believe that most people asking questions about Catholicism do so to pile on/paint the faithful as backward, etc. They really don't want an answer. One need only to look at the "I'm atheist", or "I left as soon as I could".
The government doesn't support the church any differently than it supports other religions.
So why not ask Muslims how they support the concept of Jihad? Women having to cover? Forced marriage? Intolerance of gays and transgenders? Islam has many followers. Yet I don't see anyone asking for an explanation of why it's followers tolerate/espouse their beliefs.
Or is the question simply asked to vilify people that don't typically believe in abortion? Ridicule those that believe in God?

The question in the other thread wasn’t “why are you catholic?” It was asking how people can still participate in the church while fully knowing about the cover up the church has done for decades to hide large numbers of cases of child sex abuse. In my opinion there is a large difference between the two questions. Several of us have answered the question that the OP originally posed.
Are other religions also covering up decades of child sex abuse? To my knowledge no they are not, but I don’t know for sure.
I think it’s fine if you want to start a thread asking how people can come to terms with whatever religion they practice while that religion does/forces x.

If I am not mistaken, I believe we have one Muslim member. You can just single her out in a thread I guess. We have had several LDS members leave because they felt that people were mocking their religion. I don’t know about lucyg and the Jewish faction. We might have offended her at some time too. I do not believe the Catholic Church is being persecuted here.

To my knowledge, Muslims do not have a worldwide, hierarchical power structure and billions of dollars in their coffers. And I haven't heard any of them trying to legislate their beliefs on the rest of us here in this country.

Confused by what I bolded. That thread is in no way a pile on. What do you see as a pile on? I have really enjoyed reading that thread and all of the heartfelt responses from both sides. Unless I am missing something, I think everyone who has responded has been respectful in sharing their experiences, whether they are still a member of the Catholic faith community or not.
What am I missing?

Catholics are not being mocked or vilified on that thread, and anyone who has read it knows your statement is BS.
Perhaps if Islam was as heavily represented on this board as Catholicism is, someone might ask that question of Muslims. With only a couple of Muslims on this board, I don't think it would be much of a conversation.
Stop trying to proclaim persecution where it doesn't exist.

I read the thread with interest, as it's something I've wondered myself. I didn't really see anyone being disrespectful--just stating what they believed and with many of them members of the church, so they had firsthand knowledge. I'm not sure how people talking about their own experiences, whether it was negative or positive, somehow constitutes a pile-on.

Also, OP has a history (especially lately) of posting rhetorical questions and not coming back to a thread. If she sincerely wanted an answer that would be one thing. Such as this thread started by the OP link. Why ask if you aren’t going to contribute?

I started the thread because it was relevant to me. I was catholic. My family is still catholic. I personally don’t know how people can still be catholic and was curious what the reasons were for people to continue to support the church. I appreciate peoples responses and they have helped me think about it differently.
I don’t think that your statement about Muslims is comparable to the situation with the Catholic Church.

I think it's just the focus right now. With the history of abuse, the Covington School thing, and the abortion ruling in the state of NY people are looking at the catholic church and what it stands for. The Muslim faith certainly has been the center of attention but maybe more so in the aftermath of 9/11.
I think it's a pretty normal defense mechanism for any group to try and divert attention. Catholics will say "what about the Muslims" like right here. In politics the Republicans will say "the democrats did it too" and the democrats will say "the Republicans did it too" and so forth. My own kids do it. But mom remember what she did and she didn't get in trouble".

No. I think the OP is an old pea with a new name... I'm going to come out and say it since she's been such a pot stirrer this week. I believe it's sammel. Yes. The house posting in Wisconsin a while back gave it away for me, as did the lack of capitalization. Pretty sure the OP is Sammel/Oldpeawithanewname and this behavior isn’t new from her.

well.. to have the same discussion on Islam, people would need to know a lot more about Islam.. many practices cited are cultural...based on texts.. but millions of followers of Islam practice in many many many ways...and not all alike.

Just because people question certain things about one religion doesn't mean they're 100% ok with everything all other religions do. But you know that and you're just pot stirring for whatever reason.

And in addition to what everyone else has said.... the OP has no idea what sorts of conversations are going on elsewhere about asking Muslims "how they support the concept of jihad" or "women having to cover" or etc.... She doesn't see these conversations happening. Well I would suggest to the OP that perhaps she needs to figure out how to have those conversations in her life. Maybe expand her horizons a bit. Here in Northern Virginia we have excellent inter-faith dialogues. But perhaps the OP just isn't interested in really learning the answers to her questions....?
Also, there really wouldn't be much point to ask those questions here because I suspect we don't have enough Muslims to have a very good conversation. (I think someone already said that...)

I am an atheist yet somehow, along the way, I learned the difference between a religion and a sect of that religion. I wouldn’t hold all Christians accountable for all of the fucked up things Christian sects do, so why would I hold all Muslims to a different standard?

Interesting that you consider the other thread a pile-on to the Catholic church. It was 2002 when the Boston Globe published their Spotlight series on Catholic church abuses of minors. More than 15 years ago, and yet it still continues. The hierarchy of the church has still not dealt with the issue. And a lot of Catholics are very mad about it. That's not a pile on, that's called protecting our children.

Well if she’s indeed Sammel, she didn’t seem to have much more success in her personal life than she did on the board. It always surprised me she was in education because she seemed to lack any ability to think critically.

Yet one more person to block...what is up with this poster?? Right? I think they are intentionally stirring up trouble. Islam condemns violence. Most Muslims are as horrified by Jihad as Christians were by Timothy McVey blowing up the Federal building. MANY religions are intolerant. Don't single out Muslims with your ignorance. Have ever met someone Islamic? Had a discussion?
