Who on earth would leave pasta out for five days and eat it? It wouldn't even taste or smell good at that point. Blecch. But how timely a thread...I was eating a Ferrero Rocher hazelnut just now and remembered the time I found a hazelnut in its casing on the ground in the park and decided to eat it, out of curiosity. I'd like to say I was 7, but I was actually 44 years old. I thought about making a thread about what things you've found on the sidewalk and ate besides cupcakes but I thought it would be a short thread. (I peeled and ate it, after checking for bugs--i was curious and watching a season of Alone at the time and thinking about how I could feed myself in a survival situation, in that park. I ate the raspberries too. I stopped short of boiling the crawdads I found in the stream) short thread, yes it would! Northern freshwater crayfish taste disgusting Let’s just say I had an interesting childhood foodwise

I intentionally make larger batches of brown rice as well as quinoa to be used in future meals. I leave it on the counter to cool enough to be handled and then measure it out into FreshSaver bags to be sealed and tossed into the freezer. I do label them with the date and contents out of habit as I do with all vacuum sealed stuff for the freezer. I would much rather do large batches than to have to cook small amounts multiple times, even with the ease of the instant pot. I haven’t noticed any difference in flavor by doing this.
And what about the brown rice that Costco sells already cooked in the little tubs? I like that stuff! I don’t buy it anymore because it is so easy to make my own for the freezer, but why is that cooked rice left at room temperature okay?
I haven’t frozen pasta though. Has anyone done that without it being mushy?
I don’t make pasta very often and when I do, it is typically because someone is coming over that likes it so there won’t be much if any left over. When I am alone, which is most of the time, I have been making the zucchini pasta, enough for a meal and one lunch the next day.

We have "family week" in Michigan and some of us stay longer in individual cottages. When we leave we give my in-laws some of our left over items, and one time we found that they were serving mustard that someone had given them the summer before, so it had sat (open) in their cottage that had no power for 7 months. The vinegar in the mustard preserves it. I keep mine in the fridge, but think of the big containers of ketchup and mustard out at Costco/picnic areas, etc. They aren't refrigerated and they sit out all day. I would think the quality would be compromised, but it's probably safe to consume. True, but after a year of a variety of temperatures, I'll pass. I hope, but am doubtful, that it is only mustard. She won't wash her wood cutting boards because she doesn't want to ruin them (their aren't expensive ones), they don't bleach the counters after raw meat has been on it ("we've never gotten sick"), dropped salad in the sandy yard and only admitted it when someone found an elm leaf in it. It's an adventure.

And just for good measure, I am going to gently remind my sons NOT to eat 5 day old, unrefridgerated shaghetti. I assume they know, but just in case.... Right?!?!? I thought "omg, one more thing I need to teach my 17yo before he moves off on his own" but I just asked him if he would eat 5 day old unrefrigerated spaghetti and basically said hell no...... whew at least that lesson is covered now

Other than the fact this kid died, what really gets me is I thought maybe he was living in a college apartment with roommates, and let's face it, most college boys and their living spaces are gross. But he was at home with his parents. Who other than college students leaves food sitting out for 5 days? That is so gross. I can't even go to bed at night without putting away dinner food/dishes. There is no way I could leave the same pot of food sitting on my stove for 5 days. That the kid ate it makes me think it wasn't an uncommon thing in his home.

Left over rice is a staple over here. I ate some that was probably 4 days old--it had been in the ref the entire time. If reheated rice is deadly--then I am a walking talking zombie.....
