For me at least. I’m in a restaurant that I frequent often for a quick afternoon snack. Place is open from 11am to 1am and has early bird specials on apps from 4-5.
They have a new waitress and I am in her section. About two minutes after she brings my food she puts my ticket on the table too. Ok, a bit soon, but whatever. I’m about a third through with my food and she asks if I’m done and starts reaching for my plate. She comes over a little bit later and tells me she’s not trying to rush me but could I go ahead and pay because she’s about to get off and I’m her last customer. Whoa. I’ve never been asked that by a server before. If one left before we were done another server took over.
She asks while my mouth is full and when I nod she just stands there. I told her she’ll have to come back in a bit so I can find my card. She tells me she needs me to hurry because she’s going to call a guy and see if he’ll go out with her. But she doesn’t want me to feel rushed, of course.
I go out to eat way too often and have never experienced this before. Anyone else?

I've had them bring the ticket super early, but never had someone be that up front about wanting me to pay. Something tells me she wasn't wanting much of a tip.

Sounds like it may be her first.....and last (and short-lived) waitressing job. When I was a waitress if I was off and needed to leave on time I’d have another server take over (I’d introduce them to the table and explain) and we’d deal with the tip the next day.

For me, that would rate a call to the manager with a complaint. The new waitress needs to be an ex-waitress if that’s her idea of customer service.

I cannot say that I've had a similar situation. If I was you, I'd pay and not tip. In the grand scheme of things, I don't think it warrants expending energy on a call to management/anything beyond that. I think she'll talk her way out of that job in no time flat. Natural selection and all that....

I've had a waitress ask if we could close out our bill because she was leaving, but I think it has only happened once or twice. Usually, the waitress will bring the bill early and say she is leaving and tell us who will be taking over for her and to take our time. She doesn't ask for us to pay right then and there.

I go out to eat way too often and have never experienced this before. Anyone else? I have had servers tell me that they were about to get off while I was still mid-meal. They have either turned the ticket over to someone else to collect, waited for me to finish, or let me pay before I was done. I can't remember any that weren't reasonable requests made well and giving me plenty of time. Sounds to me like you got a young server who was given a table too near the time they were supposed to get off. Or, you got someone who just plain didn't care and couldn't wait to be doing something else.

Sorry, I have to ask, are you in an area where the minimum wage for servers is now equal to the actual minimum wage? I have a feeling service could look very different when that happens. Servers will not need the tips as much, they will still need and want them, just not as much.

I have had servers need to leave mid way thru a meal. They have always brought another server with them to introduce. Each time I have given original waitress her tip and when I paid the bill, an amount for the backup waitress.

I recall it happening, but only when my party was lingering at the end. Not when we still had food in our mouths! That's crazy.

I've only been asked to pay early when we were lingering near closing and we've been invited to continue chatting while they do their cleanup, but they'd like to close out their registers. In your situation, I think she was very rude.

I have actually had that happen many times recently. Many times. I thought it was super annoying but I just thought it was a new trend. Interesting.

i have been advised that someone's shift was ending and "danielle will be taking over if you need anything".... but umm... never asked to pay so server can line up a date??? that kinda falls into "not my problem" territory.
when people do tell me they are going off and i am done but lingering, i will settle up the bill so they get their tip.

If I was actively still eating, not even half way through my food, I wouldn’t pay yet. You’re not obligated to, so she would not make me rush. Send a new waiter or waitress and I’ll pay them when I’m done. She was being rude.

She probably won't last. She was very rude. Even if she wanted to close out your tab, she shouldn't have reached for your plate, and she shouldn't have told you about some rando dude she wants to go out with. I probably would've paid up, then asked to speak with a manager. Not to get her in trouble, but to help her, really. Someone needs to speak with the manager so she can be better trained and the manager can let her know that she's being inappropriate before it turns into a really bad situation where someone does throw a huge fit.

It sounds to me like she wanted your tip before she left for the day. Jokes on her, as she wouldn't be getting one from me.

Yes! We do on our way out the door when we have exceptional service and/or food. The look of dread most people have when we ask to speak with the manager makes me feel bad.

Oh, I always tell the server that they did such a good job I want to tell the manager. LOL that makes more sense. We thank the server for the excellent service and then ask to speak with the manager on the way out the door. I always assumed if someone saw the manager called over in the dining room they would assume the worse...but probably not if we are all smiling now that I really think about it.

When I was waiting tables, I just finished up my tables, closed out the last tabs and left. If I had to leave before a customer, I just chalked it up to a loss. Sometimes the server that took over would give me the tip anyway, sometimes they wouldn't. Life's too short to worry about one tab. She was rude. Usually there is side work that needs to be done before leaving anyway. I would just do my side work and then close out the tab when the customer was leaving. Super weird IMO.

I’ve experienced that a couple of times before. But only at the end of the night. Like the restaurant is getting ready to begin their shut down procedure. Otherwise they just hand us off to another server and it’s not a big deal.

I have an honest question. If you posted or liked a post saying you'd call management - would something like that truly compel you to call and complain?

I’m the person that reads the waiters name on a bill and writes a yelp review with it. I don’t speak to the manager because that takes time, I assume they would profusely apologize and offer me something free but I don’t need any of that, it’s not life shattering. I feel Yelp is like a comment box that top management does pay attention to as I usually get replies from the restaurant.

I have an honest question. If you posted or liked a post saying you'd call management - would something like that truly compel you to call and complain? Rushing me in general? Probably not. If they tried to take my food away when it was apparent I wasn’t even close to finishing? Yes, I would. Asking me to pay without making sure I was finished eating and didn’t want anything else? Probably not. Asking me to hurry? And then providing a personal reason why I need to do that? Yes, I would.

I don't liked being rushed (even though she said no rush), she was trying to rush you along.
I would have said, I'll pay when I am finished.
I would also ask for the manager, and inquire why I was seated at a table with a food server that was nearing the end of their shift, and because of that, they are now trying to rush me.
I wouldn't rush. It's not the customers fault, if they are unknowingly seated at a table or in a section with a "soon to be off" server. The restaurant should have a fill-in or overlap server to cover shifts ending or break time.

I often get my ticket early during lunches - I really appreciate that because usually, I'm on my lunch break and it's much more convenient to have the check and be able to ready it at my leisure than to have to hunt down my server at the end of a meal.
I've only been asked to pay early in situations where we're finished and it's nearing closing time.
If I'd been rushed like that before I was half way finished with my meal, I would NOT be happy. I don't think I'd call a manager over or anything, but I might have a gentle talk with the server - clearly she hasn't been adequately trained and as a former server myself, I think I could convey how inappropriate it is without coming off as a total bitch and getting anyone in trouble.
That whole business about her telling you she was going to call a boy and ask him out made me cringe - I was trained not to ever get personal with the customer. The owner of the upscale restaurant where I worked didn't even want us to give our names (I thought that went a step too far, but she was an old-school snooty Southern debutante - we were "the help" and our names were irrelevant in her eyes as far as customers were concerned).
