in your vehicle? and did you miss it? I have a decision to make. My dh wants to buy me a brand new SUV. it would be a basic, with added ins of remote start and heated seats. My 2 must haves. BUT it would not have a sunroof. Right now I have a massive sunroof. Am I going to miss it? In the winter I close it off anyway, but in the summer I sort of like it to lighten up the inside, but I rarely open.
Thoughts?

I haven't experienced the scenario that you mean, going from having one to NOT.
But I don't use mine very much. Sun, moon--I just rarely use them.
When I drove a minivan, I used to "vent" the sunroof when I parked in the summer, to help let the heat out. But for some reason, I haven't done that in my 2 subsequent cars. (HEE! I said SUBSEQUENT...)
In my current car, I haven't gotten the hang of the buttons that control the sunroof and on occasion, I accidentally bump one and the roof starts to open, or tilt, and I have to fiddle and fiddle to get it to shut again.
I wouldn't miss it, I don't think.

My current car, Subaru Crosstrek, is the first car that I've owned without a sunroof in 30 years. The model I wanted didn't offer a sunroof. I really miss it about a dozen times a year. You know, those perfectly sunny days, when it's not too cold and not too hot, not too windy and not too much pollen, when there's no one in the car to talk to and there's nothing on the radio that I'm trying to hear. So yes, I miss it, but the practical side of me knows it's frivolous and I will live without it...until my lease is up.

I never really consider that a must-have feature, but I sure do like having one. Our climate here is such that I really open mine up fairly often. In fact, we had gorgeous weather last week and I had it open virtually every day.

I wouldn’t miss mine. I rarely even slide back the cover to let the sun shine in. The only time I use it is on really hot days, to vent out the heat when my car has been parked in the sun for awhile. And then I close it back up once the interior has cooled down.

I had a 2001 with one. When I bought a 2014, I didn't upgrade to one and I realized that, while I didn't have it open very often I did keep the shade open. I truly felt claustrophobic and a moon roof was a must-have for my 2017 purchase.
I suspect it has to do with how you use it now.

My SUV has a sunroof and I always forget about it. It wouldn’t bother me to not have it as an option.

From time to time I have wanted to begin a thread here asking about sun/moon roofs --Does anyone really use them?
We NEVER use the one we have. I like the idea of it, but when I open it, the noise is so off putting that it gets immediately closed. The climate here is too hot to let the sun shine in with just the "window" feature being used. This is the second (maybe 3rd) car that we have had with a sun roof. Not a feature we use.
Our second car, an SUV, does not have one. It is not a feature we wanted.

I did and I haven’t missed it for a single minute. In fact, when we traded in my 2014 Escape that had one for the 2017 Escape without, I specifically told the sales guy that I DID NOT want the moon roof or the worthless SYNC navigation. We saved a bunch of money by leaving off those two features. DH would sometimes open up the roof but I always hated the noise, hated my hair blowing around in my face and hated having the hot sun beating down on the top of my head (thinning hair + sun = sunburned scalp, so no thanks).
I’m with you though on the remote start and heated seats. I won’t ever have a car without them after having them. I don’t miss the SYNC navigation either since I can use the GPS on my phone and the maps work through the car’s video screen.

I didn’t really use the moonroof. I can take it or leave it. I paid extra to have heated seats added. Well worth it.

I love having one and when I bought new car a few months ago it was a major consideration. Mine is pretty large and I always have the cover open to let in more light and it just feels roomier. I live in the Seattle area so it’s closed most of the year but on those nice falls bd spring days it’s open and always open in the summer. I like the fresh air and it’s not annoying and blowing wind everywhere like having your window open is.

My brother in law is an auto body mechanic and refuses to buy cars with any sun or moon roof because he’s seen too many crumpled cars with them he claims they really compromise the structure of the vehicle and make it less safe.

I went from having to not and didn’t notice a difference. I never opened the sunroof ever. Maybe once to see if it worked. Not needed for me.

DH has had one off and on. He loves it and uses it frequently. But he’s in the military and has a short haircut, so no hair to get tangled in the wind!
In MN, my must haves would be auto climate control, remote start, heated seats and a heated steering wheel. That last seems frivolous, but I’d never go back to not having it and I don’t even live in MN anymore. It heats up quickly and when your hands are warm, it makes it better while you are waiting for the seats to warm up.
And my two cents is to buy a vehicle that has been previously leased. Get a special edition or limited edition. You will get all the bells and whistles and carve $10-20,000 off the price for a year old vehicle. We only by ones with low mileage. DH bought his LE Jeep Cherokee will all of the above, leather seats, a sunroof, etc, 21,000 miles, and saved $15,000.

DH and I both have sun roofs and I know we use ours quite a bit. We don't open it all the way, but we will have it to were the sun shines in. I would miss not having one - but if I had to choose, I would pick heated & cooled seats over the sunroof.

Yes, my last two vehicles had one and I honestly never used used it other than maybe three times a year in October, if that. Actually I used the one in my Eclipse a lot more but in the 300, almost never, because the wind patterns were different in that car and it was unpleasantly windy and too hot in the sun. Would never chance it at night due to a (very rational) fear of bugs getting in the car after an unfortunate June bug incident.
So my new car, also a 300, did not come with one and I don't miss it a bit. Too hot here, or humid, or whatever.

Your thread title reminded me that I even have one. I had to get it to have the other options I wanted. So no, wouldn’t be an issue for me. I don’t like light, but would love to use it at night. Except I’d get home and be unable to sleep due to allergies.

I live in California.... I have one in my Charger. The shade is always open. I frequently open it all the way. Yes, even in the mornings when it’s in the 30’s. I LOVE it! DH has one in his Sequoia. The shade is also always open. It gets opened all the way when a kid farts. Lol Our Corvette is a removable top. It’s always off unless it’s raining. I’ve also got heated front and back seats AND heated/cooled cup warmers! I didn’t even know they made that feature! Had my car not come fully loaded (bought used) I would not have added in the seats and cup holders. Very thankful it does have all the fun stuff. I also really like my remote start on those frozen mornings.

At the age of 53 (last year) I was FINALLY able to buy a car that I loved. Teens and 20s - bought what I could afford. In my 30s and 40s with kids - I bought practical cars.
When it was my turn to buy a car just for ME? It had to have a sun/moon roof. I didn't even know I wanted that until I saw cars with and without and made up my stubborn mind that I HAD to have that.
It was completely ridiculous, but I felt I'd earned the right to be ridiculous. As far as I was concerned, this would be the last car I ever bought and I wanted it to have what I wanted it to have.
A sun/moon roof was the deal breaker at the umpteen dealerships we went to.
And I LOVE it. I don't open it up as often as I thought I would, but I so very much love the option to do so if the mood strikes me.
It brings me joy and I think I'd have a hard time going to a vehicle without one. Just 'cause it was a statement moment for me.

I went from a sunroof to a convertible to no sunroof. The weather is either too cold or hot af with a sprinkling of sunroof days. I don't miss it at all. Plus we still have one car with a sunroof and I don't use it.

I love having mine and although times like this, winter in Wisconsin, I don't open it much I still like having the extra light coming in.
If it has snow on it, I make sure to remove it for just that reason. More light. Maybe seasonal affective disorder related (?). I don't know but if makes me feel better.
ETA Subaru Baja- they come standard.

If no sunroof had been an option on my current car I would have gone that route. I have one and it is very rarely opened. In the summers I will use the tilt feature to help vent the car, otherwise I don't open it. Don't even push back the sun screen because I don't like the glare from overhead. The remote start and heated seats are much more important. My current car even has second row heated seats, front seats with cooling and a heated steering wheel. Don't think I can go back to not having a heated steering wheel!
