While you claim you hate trump, it’s clear you and others do not understand the damage trump is doing to the foundation of this country. The issue is not extreme lefty vs extreme righty, but the corruption that surrounds trump and those around him. The steps they are taking to protect themselves and they don’t care what they destroy in the process. To trump and the others, the Constitution is just a piece of paper they wipe their collective asses with. The question that should be asked, even if the Democrats chose Sanders as their nominee, would he be as petty and vindictive as trump? Would he be as corrupt? Tell the lies, lies, lies and more lies he tells every single day? peatlejuice If dt remains in the WH we may not have a country. Your children/grandchildern might need to learn Russian or Chinese IF they can even breathe the air and drink the water. Several people have already stated that they are sure there will be a peaceful turnover should dt lose. dt has already stated he has the police, military and his bikers who support him and at a certain point it might get bad, really bad. If the NRA thinks their guns will be safe long turn, they are ver wrong.... He WILL take them away!

As a left-leaning independent voter, the more I see Democrats adopt a position like Merge's, the more inclined I am to vote third-party or not vote at all. I've said it before, and I'll say it again, I'm not willing to trade one extreme for another. I loathe Trump and the current iteration of the GOP; my vote is the Democrats' vote to lose, and this "damn the moderates" attitude is doing it. Sounds just like the "I can't vote for Hillary because....." People couldn't vote for the intelligent flawed candidate so they allowed the uninformed, narcissistic, infantile flawed candidate to win instead. Hope you enjoy another 4 years of Trumpism, white nationalism, Trump making bank on this 394839 golf trips, his embarrassing daily tweets, his conspiracy with a foreign government, his lies, etc. and MOST IMPORTANTLY enough far right wing fringe judges to set back women's rights, minority rights, LGBTQ rights, disability rights, etc. FOR 30-40 YEARS!!!

I'm far more interested in the young and the disenfranchised who never vote. Let's get them out and voting. And I would love for them to vote, but year after year, we see that they don't and the older generation does. If the older generation stays home or votes for Trump because the democratic nominee alienates them, then the election is lost yet again. I know plenty of the older generation that aren't Trump supporters who are still pissed about the last election. Ideally, they would vote for anybody but Trump, but in reality they might not. I believe this election is too important and we need not only not Trump, but a strong democrat that can appeal to many people. RBG is not going to live forever and if we miss this chance, the court will swing so far to the right that our country will be screwed. The more extreme a candidate is, the easier time the right will in vilifying the person. FWIW, I am not a fan of many in the running for the Democratic nomination and I would be hard pressed to be excited and campaign for them. I want someone who is liberal, but not so far to the left. You lose people like me when Sanders and a couple of the others come into the picture. Well, if they want to change stuff they need to vote - you can protest till the cows come home but it won’t effect change if it isn’t followed up in the voting booth.

“Tesla cars are made in California...”
Response from supporter.
“They are glorified golf carts and come from Scandinavia or some similar country.”

If we don’t, then maybe this country deserves trump and his destructive ways. The ONLY reason I won’t say I won’t vote for Bernie is that he is way way way less corrupt that Trump. However, the left is not devoid of corruptness which is why I will not say I will vote Democrat no matter what. No, you don’t get a blank check, no. Trump's 'SNL' attack crosses the lineBy Dean Obeidallah Updated 9:55 AM ET, Sun March 17, 2019 Editor's Note: Dean Obeidallah, a former attorney, is the host of SiriusXM radio's daily program "The Dean Obeidallah Show" and a columnist for The Daily Beast. Follow him @deanobeidallah. The opinions expressed in this commentary are his own. View more opinion articles on CNN. (CNN)After NBC aired a rerun of '"Saturday Night Live" on Saturday, President Donald Trump renewed his criticism of the show on Twitter. This piece originally published on Feb. 17, 2019. On Friday, President Donald Trump declared a national emergency because, as he put it, there's a "national security crisis on our border" marked by "an invasion of our country with drugs, with human traffickers, with all types of criminals and gangs." With that type of calamity bearing down on our nation, you would expect Trump to be laser focused on the threat in the days that followed. But this weekend, Trump managed to find time to watch NBC's "Saturday Night Live," which he notably hosted twice in the past, and then took to Twitter to not just slam the show, but to suggest there needs to be "retribution" and that the comedy show should be investigated. It was the latest escalation in his war on free speech. He first tweeted Sunday morning, "Nothing funny about tired Saturday Night Live on Fake News NBC! Question is, how do the Networks get away with these total Republican hit jobs without retribution? Likewise for many other shows? Very unfair and should be looked into. This is the real Collusion!" Then four minutes later, he tweeted in all caps -- telling us how he apparently now views the iconic comedy show as part of those threatening our nation: "THE RIGGED AND CORRUPT MEDIA IS THE ENEMY OF THE PEOPLE!" Could Trump be laying the ground work to declare another national emergency to silence SNL?! Aside from the absurdity of the idea, it also violates the First Amendment right to free speech, as the American Civil Liberties Union was quick to point out. But before you dismiss the idea entirely, keep in mind two things. First, an Ipsos poll in August found that 44% of Republicans believe Trump should be able to close news outlets for "bad behavior." Do you have any doubt that if Trump called for comedy shows to be more "fair and balanced" in their criticism of Republicans, his base would not cheer? We might even see a majority of Trump fans support silencing "SNL," especially since the right has long viewed Hollywood and the entertainment industry as anti-Republican. (Of course, Trump and his base would undoubtedly never support forcing Fox News to truly be "fair and balanced.") And, second, this wouldn't be the first time a GOP president used his powers to silence comedic criticism. In 1969, the liberal-leaning CBS comedy show "The Smothers Brothers Comedy Hour" mocked then-President Richard Nixon to the point where the comedic duo made it onto Nixon's "enemies list." Nixon then used his well-placed allies in the ranks of CBS executives, including CBS programming chief Robert D. Wood, to get the show canceled. ** www.cnn.com/2019/02/17/opinions/snl-trump-emergency-declaration-obeidallah/index.html

Still dragging dead man.
But, hey, some will still vote for him or for a 3rd party - so we get to keep our dignified POTUS for another 4 years. Glory!!

It really is just as simple as that. It really is. People keep making the mistake that trump is just like other politicians, but he is not, he is in a class all of his own. And as such this country has never been under this type of attack before. I’m really tired of suggesting the reason for trump was because of Hillary. What it does show is a level of ignorance for those who chose not to vote for her. And I will say, if she had lost to one of the other 16 Republicans that ran for President, we would not being have these types of discussions. What we would be discussing is how destructive the Republican agenda is to the people and not how destructive the current President of the United States is to the foundation of this country. Like I said, come November 2020, the voters of this country have two choices, either for this country, or against this country. And we will see what is important to the voters of this country. But to be honest, I don’t hold out much hope the voters will do the right thing and vote for the country, especially after the mid-terms. Based on their inaction in doing oversight in Congress, not one Republican running for re-election should have been elected. It’s clear that some didn’t understand the magnitude of the threat trump is, and I’m no longer confident they will by 2020. Especially when I hear there are conditions that must be met before voting against trump and for the country.

linkWell who knew. Kudos to trump, jr. When I first read the story, the twitter name of the student was provided. So of course I checked her out. She represents the extremely far left. In other words, whatever cause she is pushing, she didn’t do herself any favors. IMO. From guacamoley... “In An Unqualified Miracle Donald Trump Jr. Just Came To The Defense Of Chelsea Clinton After She Was Publicly Accused Of Islamophobia”From the article. “A vigil held for the victims of the New Zealand massacre reached a boiling point when Chelsea Clinton was accosted by an incensed New York University student accusing Clinton of: “all that you have done, all the Islamophobia that you have stoked.” The New York Post identified Leen Dweik as one of the students cornering the former first daughter from a video circulating online. She can be heard yelling: “This right here is the result of a massacre stoked by people like you and the words that you put out into the world.” Dweik was reacting to Clinton’s earlier comment disparaging Rep. Ilhan Omar (D-MN) who was accused of making anti-Semitic comments. Before attending Friday’s vigil inside NYU’s Kimmel Center, Clinton spoke out against the attacks at two mosques in Christchurch that left 49 people dead and at least 20 others injured. “Heartbroken & horrified by the white nationalist terrorist attack during Jummah on the mosques and Muslim community in Christchurch,” she tweeted. “Keeping all affected by this tragedy in my heart and prayers. We need a global response to the global threat of violent white nationalism.” Clinton, who is pregnant with her third child, remained calm and listened to the infuriated students. “I’m so sorry,” she said. “Certainly it was never my intention. I do believe words matter.” Many people defended Clinton, including Donald Trump Jr. “It’s sickening to see people blame @chelseaclinton for the NZ attacks because she spoke out against anti-Semitism,” he tweeted on Saturday. “We should all be condemning anti-Semitism & all forms of hate. Chelsea should be praised for speaking up. Anyone who doesn’t understand this is part of the problem.”

I thought Chelsea handled herself as well as she could. Dweik did herself no favors, but Chelsea handled her like the grief-stricken fearful person Dweik likely is - given the savage and televised nature of the attack.

With all due disrespect, since that's how you're speaking to me and those like me, fuck you and the Democratic stance that only the ultra-left truly understand the threat that is Trump. Do I think Bernie is as morally devoid as Trump? No, not even a little. If he didn't hold such extreme socialist views (particularly in the economic realm), I wouldn't be so hesitant to vote for him, as I'm willing to go much farther left than I'm typically comfortable with during this election because of Trump. But I'm a realist, and Trump's immediate successor is only going to have a limited ability to undo the damage Trump has caused. An extreme leftist successor will simply result in our country suffering from terrible right-wing morality politics and terrible left wing economic politics. I can't have children, revirdsuba99 (and thanks for the daily reminder of my infertility), but for the record, my refusal to vote for a left-wing extremist is because I do believe that if our country is weak both morally and economically, we will be just that much more vulnerable to a foreign country takeover. Plainly speaking, Democrats of the Pea board, if your candidate loses this election, it's not them, it's you, that will be the cause. You can't go around accusing moderates of being stupid, or blind to the issues, or anti-American, just because we aren't willing to sacrifice our own morals and beliefs for a different set of extreme beliefs, and still expect to win (or get our votes). Today, you've pushed me closer to a third-party vote than any of your candidates have, including Bernie. So take your bullying and self-righteousness, and shove it. With that, I'm out. You all clearly don't want to hear any view other than the extreme left.

To those who have conditions about what Democrat they will vote for in 2020, here is your other choice..
trump
”What the Democrats have done in trying to steal a Presidential Election, first at the “ballot box” and then, after that failed, with the “Insurance Policy,” is the biggest Scandal in the history of our Country!”
”Just spoke to Mary Barra, CEO of General Motors about the Lordstown Ohio plant. I am not happy that it is closed when everything else in our Country is BOOMING. I asked her to sell it or do something quickly. She blamed the UAW Union — I don’t care, I just want it open!”
This is the guy who makes decisions that affect all our lives and may do so for years to come.

That he has already sold our country to Russia's whims in hopes of building a tower in Moscow with his name on it? That his racist and incendiary remarks have triggered a civil war in our country? Yeah, news flash, I know that about him. I see that he's taken our car and driven straight towards the cliff. But I will always hold firm that voting for an extreme leftist will overcorrect the car and take us straight into the semi in the opposite lane. We have the ability to pull our car away from the cliff edge without slamming into the semi. Just because you are too short-sighted, too pessimistic, to see the world in anything but absolutes, doesn't mean the rest of the world has to see it the same way as you. But you know what? Go ahead, try and convince me why the semi is a better option than moderately correcting towards, say, the ditch. Without calling me stupid, avoidant or anti-American. I don't think you can actually even put together a case without relying on an insult or a bullying tactic.

Then make sure there is a presidential candidate that people who aren't so far to the left will support. But to completely discount those people will be why there is another four years of Trump. You can't just blame people like peatlejuice if you aren't willing to take her honest opinion at face value and instead blame her. If the democrats put up a candidate that turns off the independents and the moderates can get behind, it is just as much their fault.

To those who have conditions about what Democrat they will vote for in 2020, here is your other choice.. trump ”What the Democrats have done in trying to steal a Presidential Election, first at the “ballot box” and then, after that failed, with the “Insurance Policy,” is the biggest Scandal in the history of our Country!” ”Just spoke to Mary Barra, CEO of General Motors about the Lordstown Ohio plant. I am not happy that it is closed when everything else in our Country is BOOMING. I asked her to sell it or do something quickly. She blamed the UAW Union — I don’t care, I just want it open!” This is the guy who makes decisions that affect all our lives and may do so for years to come. I hate Trump with a passion and I will probably vote for whomever the democratic nominee turns out to be, but that doesn't mean everybody will. It is in the country's best interest that the person the democrats put up is electable by a myriad of groups and not just the extreme left or the young or the minority or the union or the white male...the person needs to appeal to all of the groups. I will say that if the dems put up someone completely so far left that I have issues, I will probably vote Republican for the Senate and the house if they aren't morally corrupt to hold that person in check. Which sucks because then if Trump wins, we've given him the majority again.

peatlejuice I appreciate your perspective and suggestion that the Democratic Party needs to look for some attempt at a middle of the road compromise to get the idiot out of the Oval Office and set our country back on a track that is sustainable in so many ways. After all, isn’t the unwillingness to compromise one of the big complaints with how the R’s are trying run the government these days 🤷🏻♀️ Thank you for attempting to share your perspective on this issue and I do appreciate your cliff analogy.

Nope. I'm not taking the blame for anyone's decision to vote for a shitty candidate. Trump is an unmitigated disaster, and if you voted for him or vote for him again, or vote for a third-party candidate and hand him the election indirectly, that is on you entirely. You all are like the abusive husband saying, "look what you made me do!" after he beats the shit out of his wife. You had a choice in the last election and you'll have a choice in this one, and that's on you. It's not on us to run a Republican in Democrat's clothing because Republicans lit their party on fire and poured gasoline on it. Perhaps so-called moderates should take a harder look in the mirror vis a vis their willingness to hand the country back to this malignant narcissist because they don't like the tone of an individual on a message board. We heard plenty about how Hillary "forced" people to vote for Trump or a third party last time, and I for one am over it.

The Democrats have been put in a terrible position. Not only are they expected to appease all of the unhappy Republican and Independents, they run the risk of alienating liberals who are hungry for real progressive change, a candidate that they're passionate about. The Democrats have been trying to appeal to moderates for ages, running centrists for decades and Republicans don't vote for them. The Republican party has gone full-tilt right and the Democrats have shifted that way along with them. A course adjustment a bit left isn't necessarily extreme, especially when policy by policy, liberal policies are more popular. A few more left wing representatives aren't going to turn the country into Finland and it doesn't mean that more moderate Democrats are going to disappear. Democrats are expected to offer up THE magical candidate that will make EVERYONE happy and if they don't....then EVERYTHING will be their fault. AGAIN. ( the next two years may kill me )
Every once in a while it would be nice to hear a diatribe about how the Republicans need to get their party in line and appeal to the masses.

I voted for Hillary and absolutely believe that those who voted third party are at least partly at fault for Trumps win (cue the people who did that defending their choice). And I will probably vote for whoever runs against him, but I do not believe all the people will and while you may be okay with finger-pointing after the fact and being pissed and over it perhaps a better tactic is making sure the person nominated appeals to the most people. Why is it the moderates who should have to compromise if the far left won't?

I disagree. We lost in some states because it was all about the minority and underprivileged voters. She lost a lot of white males and females because they felt alienated. Whomever is picked to run has got to appeal to 90% of people who are moderate to left. We can't win if any of them stay home en mass as trump supporters are die hard. I'm far more interested in the young and the disenfranchised who never vote. Let's get them out and voting. Agreed. I'll point out here that a lot of whites felt alienated in the last election cycle because Fox and Russian bots told them to feel that way - and will continue to tell them. When the Daily Caller and Breitbart are foaming about the war against white men, the war against Christianity, the war against conservative free speech, and painting Democrats as the bogeymen responsible for all this, of course their watchers/readers feel alienated. I'm not sure how far the Democrats should have to go to appease the feelings of those who ride the Breitbart white outrage machine.

Every once in a while it would be nice to hear a diatribe about how the Republicans need to get their party in line and appeal to the masses. I think most people think that the republican party has jumped the shark. And since Trump is their likely nominee, there is no reason to talk about getting their party in line because he is malignant. Not only are they expected to appease all of the unhappy Republican and Independents, they run the risk of alienating liberals who are hungry for real progressive change, a candidate that they're passionate about. If those progressive people won't vote for a more moderate candidate, then Trumps 2nd term is on them as well. I don't think there are enough progressives to carry the country.

I think this is where we are at and as usual, I can find a quote from The West Wing I want to win and I don't think the current ultra progressive movement, whether it is Bernie or the younger progressives, is the way we are going to win.

Why is it the moderates who should have to compromise if the far left won't? As was pointed out above, it's not possible to run a candidate who appeals to all people. We run a moderate and risk the liberal base staying home, or we run a liberal and risk the moderates staying home. Of the two groups, after the last election, I have far more faith in the liberal base turning out for a real liberal than I do for the moderates turning out for a moderate. I don't personally think it's helpful to classify real, mainstream liberals as far-left. As was also pointed out above, the Republican party has moved so far to the right, and the Democrats with it in many ways, that traditional liberals are seen as far-left wackos by those inclined to think so. To the current iteration of the GOP, anyone who supports a woman's right to choose or thinks we don't need to deport every last working immigrant is suddenly a crazy, far-left socialist. As far as why one side should have to compromise? I dunno. I think moderates screwed us over in the last election. It's their turn to take one for the team.

We run a moderate and risk the liberal base staying home, Do you really think the liberal base would stay home though? I don't. I see them coming out to vote. I'm watching the replace "the Republicans with Democrats" and the huge swing going on in Colorado right now. Colorado has voted blue in the last 3 presidential elections. Due to some policies that the democratic control government is putting in, I can see it going red if the Democratic candidate is too far left. Colorado doesn't have too many electoral votes, but it does have some. Hillary needed 38 more electoral votes to win. If the next person loses Colorado, that makes 45. Where are you going to pick them up? Which states are most likely to flip? What do those states want? I don't think this is about base or moderate or centrists this election because we've shown that we can win the popular vote. We need to win the electoral college.
