I like him a lot. He is a very accomplished young man, obviously very bright, but also very decent and rational and down to earth.

I’m not worried about his age; anything will be a significant improvement. I haven’t made up my mind yet, though; there are several Democratic candidates that I am watching with interest.
What I like about Pete, in addition to his obvious smarts, is that he is making this more of a competition.

He seems to be a remarkable young man with a charming husband. Rhodes Scholar, served in Aphghanastan (SP), concert pianist. I do like him.O just don't know if this is his time running against dt. We know the Evangelical would not vote for him, too many extreme Christians would not vote for him. I have said that he Democrats had better get their act together ALL of them. They are risking our democracy! The democrats aren't going to get the Evangelical or extreme Christian votes no matter who they put up. We need to quit worrying about that and be Democrats.

I don't want to derail this thread -and I agree with you on extreme Christians - but I do think there are many Evangelical Christians who are looking to the Dems as a place to land. We know we cannot support Trump. I've realized that I will most likely have to vote Dem to keep Trump out. I've recently read that atleast 20% of Evangelical Christians are 'moveable' this Election cycle and for the Dems to ignore that 20% all together will be a costly mistake I believe.

Would those “movable” Evangelicals christians be willing to vote for a gay man for President? Is that part of what makes them movable? Or would a gay candidate turn them away?

Actually, he speaks 8 languages. English being one.

I would say, some would. Sure, there will be some who won't but there has been a whole splintering of the Evangelicals over how gays are treated. Look at Jen Hatmaker after she took a stance of inclusion. There is a large number (like me and others on this board) that would vote for a gay man and not think twice as long as his policies lined up with something we could support. What makes us moveable is that in the past, we normally would be a Republican voter - even if we didn't completely support the candidate or their policies. Now that isn't an option for many of us. We are looking for a candidate that can move the US forward - and if that candidate has a D or R behind their name isn't relevant anymore. Our vote is no longer guarenteed to the Republicans.

I have not found dirt to-date.
I can’t believe how low my expectations have become in these Trumpian times. Does Mayor Pete speak in complete, lucid sentences? Yes. Is he part of a corrupt grifter dynasty? No. Good enough. If he wins the nomination I’m voting for him.

I love what I have seen. When I hear him speak about his faith it makes me so happy. I am as liberal as they come on social values and I love that he speaks so openly about his faith and what it means to him because I believe the same things. He is a Democrat I think my husband would actually vote for (he didn’t vote last election because he was so stupidly anti Hilary even though he didn’t want Trump to win). He is a Republican through and through, but I think he would actually vote for Pete.

I have some friends who are big political donors and really get involved with politics. They are traveling to South Bend to hear his announcement. I put a lot of stock in their opinions and have been keeping my eye on him. I'm still a Beto supporter as a Texas gal but the race will be very interesting this year for the nomination.

I saw a clip of John Kasich talking about the leading Dems from a recent poll. He made a comment about how Beto and Pete appeal to the same groups generally speaking and that for now Pete appears to be winning that group over (not to count out Beto but that Pete has the momentum and could pull away).

I like him quite a bit. Mostly likely my top preference, although I really like Yang. He won't go anywhere because people don't listen to what he says. That is to say they hear something and refuse to listen to the why.
Mayor Pete is so SO brilliant. He is well-spoken and calm. Calm! Can you imagine? I feel that I could truly love him as a candidate. Every single word he has spoken I have found myself nodding in agreement.
@zingermack - LOL!

I’m moving closer on my bench to Pete. Not that I don’t still love Beto, but so far, he really hasn’t shown me much. Now that I really think about it, leaving my heart out of it ~ I’m moving even closer to Pete. But - we ( USA ) need a candidate who can beat asswipe.

I feel like Mayor Pete is coming out of nowhere and generating the same kind of genuine excitement that Obama did. I can’t tell you how many “non-Democrats” I’ve seen express admiration for Mayor Pete. He’s definitely my choice, but I will vote blue no matter the candidate. Trump needs to go.

Frankly I’m not interested in courting Evangelical Christians who won’t vote for a candidate because they’re gay. Evangelical Christians overwhelmingly voted for Trump— you can’t get someone who more obviously lacks “Christian” values. If they’re willing to move their own positions some, I’ll welcome them.

I just read an article about hi coming from nowhere a Obama did, and Mayor Pete has more experience too. And someone just mentioned his calmness, which is delightful. He has answered every question asked. He certainly is well rounded, eclectic knowledge and experience. What wonderful parents he had!!

I can definitely see this. My dad is a 75 year old retired southern baptist missionary and he is even excited about Pete. LOL I doubt (but cannot say for sure) if he's ever voted Democrat in a National election, but he is excited. He thinks Pete would be a good VP, then after 4 years to gain experience, President.

As with the Republicans in 2016, the Democrats have a gaggle of candidates running to replace trump. Because there are so many choices, we need to start weeding them out.
So far I have tossed out Sanders, Biden, and Beto. I’m also adding Mayor Pete to the list.
At this point the reason may seem minor to some, but we have many months ahead before we start voting for real and as quickly as they were tossed off my list, they could be back on it as someone I could wholeheartedly support instead of just showing up to vote on Election Day 2020.
My reason for tossing Mayor Pete was a remark that he made about Hillary that I felt threw her under the bus. It was a remark, IMO, that was aimed directly at the “never Hillary” crowd. To me that is pandering at a group that help put us in the mess we are in today.
I’m done with pandering and I’m done with candidates that feel they have to tip toe around groups of people instead of being honest with them, being honest with all of us. So if any candidate does either of these things, they are off my list.
The bar is so low when it comes to comparing trump’s intelligence to others, that I could make a strong argument that my dead cat Fred is smarter then trump.
If you want to make a true comparison on intelligence , then compare Mayor Pete against President Obama.
Pete Souza, President Obama’s photographer, has been doing a great job on Instagram pointing out, by pictures with a little narrative, trump’s shortcomings compared to a real president. Today’s installment was particularly good.
Our goal should not be to just get someone smarter then trump in the White House, but someone with the same type of dignity, intelligence, integrity, empathy and grace that we once had in the White House.

I am a Christian who is surrounded by "Christian culture". I know of no movable Christians in real life. I know Christians who moved before this last election, but the ones who didn't move then, I believe they won't be moved now either. They will vote for Trump again. It makes me absolutely crazy.

He believes we can fight climate change without phasing out all fossil fuels. I think the term he used it’s not an either/or choice. I disagree.

Ok, sometimes I follow that thread, sometimes I don't. LOL It moves so quick. Thank you for sharing why Beto's not your guy. Im still researching and learning about him. Will need to google and read up on this.

I remember hearing him on Wait Wait Don't Tell Me last year and he was great then.
I wonder at what point Evangelical Christians will look back and realize they supported a horrible man & were complicit in allowing horrible policies to hurt so many? I am a Christian, but was also a never Trumper right from the beginning. I don't know how to explain it, but I feel his bad (rotten) spirit.
