I think people want to sell crafty items and recover 90-100% of their investment. In this business that just doesn’t work, most of the time. There are some items that will hold their value or increase in value, but that is not the norm. I know someone who wants to sell a lot of older stamp but only if she can get back most of what she invested. It’s not going to happen. Papertrey Ink stamps from 2012 aren’t worth their full original value; trends change too quickly.

Oh shit, I gave my niece who is a teacher an entire set of 36 of them with a holder. Maybe I can take a tax deduction I doubt people are actually buying them. Are they?

We have a few women in our area that are advertising scrapbook lots on our Facebook sell sites. The latest was a some really old stickers and papers for $45 - what? Every time I see this type of post I think I should sell some of my old junk too! And to be honest I don't know if the stuff is actually selling or not.

Teachers do use them. Kids LOVE them, they have no shame in their cutting game! that being said that is too high of a price. They are readily available in most thrift stores,

I friend of mine got married to a guy who doesn't get her craft. (grumble grumble). I noticed he has been posting some of her stuff on Marketplace and is pricing it for what it originally cost. He had a white scrap shelf on sale for $100 originally. A few weeks later, it is down to $50.

Yeah, most people put too high a value on their stuff. They loved it once and they think it should be worth almost what they paid for it. Not just craft stuff, but everything. It's psychology.
The red flag for me is "brand new, never used." So much stuff seems like a cool idea, or really great value (so many scissors for so little money!) but never gets used. If they never used the scissors that they bought new, probably while they were still fashionable, I figure I'll probably never use them either.
I actually have two fancy edged scissors that I bought a few years ago thinking I would use them for something that a die would do a much better job of, but I didn't want to invest in dies. Used them once or twice to no good effect. I should give them to a kid or a teacher. Or the thrift shop.

just curious- what would you price those for. The 18 pack with stand sells for $35 on Amazon Prime.
I have a couple of pairs and still use them at times.

Eventually he'll probably have to accept that no one wants to pay more than $10 or $20 for it and it might be better value just to keep it. Especially when buyers want to have the thing delivered to them and then try to haggle the price down a little further.

I had one of those sets and put it in a box for donation along with some other scrap supplies. It wasn't worth spending the time making a Craiglist ad and responding to people who want to offer $3. I'd rather give it away.

You should totally take that tax deduction! I donated a Bind it All and a big box full of assorted O-wires and they happily gave me a donation letter.

I think probably 10-25% of the new value is about right, depending on how available and desirable the item is. I wouldn't expect to be able to get $10 for this set. But I wouldn't even try to sell them - I just don't think you'd get many takers outside of a yard sale or thrift shop (for about $3-5 in that context). I'd just give it to a thrift shop or a teacher.

I'd rather give it away. This is how I feel about all of the things (craft or otherwise) I no longer love or want. Unless it’s a “big ticket” item, I give it away. Things like a die cutting machine or something like that I will sell locally but at a drastically reduced price.

I donated all mine. I agree, the prices are way too high for something with little demand.

In all honesty, it's hard to recoup your time to triage it, price it, ship it because it isn't worth much...Most of what I've purged over the years has either gone into a bundle box of one set price, or I've given it away to a non-profit. I had a good chuckle over those scissors - we sure tore 'em up back in 1994 with CM!!

I actually LOVE my deco scissors! I'll use them instead of a border punch sometimes. LOL!

As an art teacher I would actually consider buying them at that price - it is less than a dollar a pair. I wouldn't use them for scrapbooking but kids love them.
The average person has no use for them anymore. I think that is why I took them to school in the first place. I do wish I had a nice scallop one- that would be convenient to use instead of a border punch.

Still have my fancy scissors in a stand. I took them to a family reunion a couple of years ago where one of the activities was to scrapbook a page about yourself. Those scissors were quite popular, especially with the kids, but some of the adults used them too.
That little wooden stand is back on the shelf in my craftroom. I had planned to donate it after the reunion, but reconsidered it and kept them for the dgk's to play with here.

I peruse the marketplace on FB for craft stuff and random furniture all the time. I literally laugh out loud at some of the prices. There are people who list things for what they paid plus shipping (we didn't always have an Ikea, but now we do) when you had to pay like $300 to get stuff from Ikea. Now it's local, so no one is going to pay $400 for your 2 Alex drawer units that are $119 each in the store brand new. There are also a lot of people who list the Kallax units for over retail by a good $20 or more. This is ridiculous to me because the bigger ones are incredibly difficult to transport assembled...so it's not like there is a perk to buying them assembled because you're spending the time it would have taken to put it together to finagle it into your vehicle (or having to rent a vehicle to transport it). I've seen the Michael's organizer cubes for about full retail pricing, too. No one pays that in the store, they sure as hell aren't going to pay you that for something used! Either people just don't remember what they paid for things or they think people are stupid.

If my husband sold my craft stuff I'd have to sell his fishing gear, gardening items, bee keeping boxes and accessories, general tools, cooking gizmos, books and a crap ton of other stuff. I used to participate in our LSS "garage" sale every year. Since the LSS went out of business I have donated to a school and the Vets.

I could barely even give my decoratiive edge scissors away when I finally decided to part with them 6 months ago. Even the school was like, "Well, we'll take them, but I can't guarantee they'll be used." Have to admit though - I kept my deckle and my scallop edge pairs.
I agree with everyone else though - it's a little crazy what some people post their used stuff at for a price point. I had a friend who admitted he got some shelves that were decorated with a highly recognizeable alcohol label for free from some convenience store that was going out of business. His wife was pregnant and they were clearing out their house to make it more family friendly. He was asking $100 for the pair of shelves - that he got for free. He just kept reposting and drawing attention to them. I couldn't understand why he didn't at least slash the price or just offer to give them away since he got them for free to begin with.

Totally agree. Unless something is a big ticket item I can sell and recoup something it's generally just not worth the hassle and I'd rather give it away.

I remember when the better Fiskars scissors were like $7-8 or so for one pair at MSRP. People balked at paying that (and rightly so) and eventually the Chinese knock offs came out and could be had for less than $2 each, retail! They were so bad though and didn’t cut worth a crap. Another somewhat related thing I never understood was how people thought cutting or punching through aluminum foil would somehow “sharpen” those tools. If anything, logic would tell you it should make them duller. If cutting plain paper would make my mom’s favorite sewing scissors duller I can’t even imagine what cutting foil would do!

And yes, he's got plenty of stuff he doesn't get rid of.

Makes me grateful for my 'as long as the bills are paid, buy whatever you want' husband who basically only tells me to shut up about shopping because I'm telling him about a good sale I'm considering shopping because he doesn't want to deal with me complaining about missing out because I was too busy telling him about it than checking out.
