Dh and I as well as DD (Aspie) use the flat sheet. Ds (Autism) hates the flat sheet and uses just his light weight comforter, and in the winter adds a blanket or two.

I use a flat sheet and 3 dogs to cover up with every night, year round.

...we stripped the comforter out of the duvet cover and just used that. . So if comforter = duvet why don’t Americans call it a comforter cover? Comforter doesn’t really equal duvet. A duvet is a cover for your comforter, typically used on down blankets. I don’t think they are really used on a regular stuffing comforter, but they might be. I think some people have just gotten lazy and use duvet and comforter interchangeably, but know they are not the same thing.

That what we do exept that we each have our own duvet , you can go for a visit under the other duvet and after you come back to your own . When we were in Europe, I loved that the hotels and air bnbs all had 2 duvets on the bed. No tug of war over blankets and you can adjust covers if you get hot or cold without disturbing your partner. At home, we have oversized blankets and duvets on our beds (king size on queen bed) which helps with the tug of war

I have to have my flat sheet!! It does annoy me when the sheets aren't long enough to properly be tucked in. I'm old school, so I make hospital corners and I like my bed very tightly made and neat, always. It's sick, but if one of us gets up to go to the bathroom at night, I'll be freshening up the bed and making it all tight again, like a hotel!! I'll see if I have a current pic... My twin. I used to get up and straighten the sheets and blanket while XH was asleep in bed, before I could go back to sleep. I can’t stand mangled bedding.

No flat sheet here. I really don't find washing a duvet cover every week to be a big deal.
We don't own any blankets, I can't remember the last time I used one, maybe not since my teens.

And always a flat sheet or the comforter will get nasty and smell pretty quick on hot nights.

Ok, I think i based that on what someone else said further up thread. So can you explain how they’re different? It did I miss an explanation? And the purpose is much like other bed linen etc - to keep you warm/cool as appropriate when you sleep 🤔

The purpose of them is exactly the same as any other bed cover, you sleep under it for comfort and warmth.

Flannel sheets, blanket, and bedspread. 364 nights a year! I sleep in my little cocoon with my head peaking out from the covers.

I use a light comforter and a weighted blanket. The flat sheet just gets bunched at my feet since I move in my sleep, so I don't usually use it, and I like to be bundled up anyway. If I get warm in the summer I just turn the fan next to my bed on.

Thank you, I had missed that. From what I can tell a comforter would probably be called a quilt here. The definitions vary depending on where you look. Most definitions indicate that both are intended to be the top layer of bedding, but a duvet is usually used with a duvet cover, while a comforter is used as is and often matches the rest of the bedding. Some descriptions say a duvet is fluffier than a comforter, but that isn’t universal. Some people use duvet to talk about the cover, but most use duvet to describe the filled part that is placed inside the duvet cover. A quilt would be flatter, in my opinion, than a comforter, which is usually filled much like a duvet, although many times it’s synthetic fill rather than down. I think comforter and duvet are almost the same thing, but duvets are usually white and then expected to be used with a cover.

I always use a flat sheet, I don't want to wash my blanket weekly.
To me (I'm in the US):
Comforter = usually a fluffy decorative bedcover that is used on the top of the blanket.
Duvet = the white fluffy thing that you have to buy a duvet cover for, and they are the devil to put together.
Quilt = store bought or handmade quilted bedcover that has a thin layer of batting quilted in between the top and bottom pieces

I have to have a top sheet. I don't want to take off/put back the duvet cover any more than necessary. What a colossal PITA!

Whatever goes in a duvet cover I believe is really plain and the duvet cover is the decorative item. A duvet in a duvet cover and a comforter are used for the same thing though.

The only problem with that is king sized pillows on a queen bed are a bit oversized, but’s better than too small pillows.

I like a flat sheet. I get hot when I sleep and often like only a sheet on me. DH likes a down comforter. If I didn’t use a flat sheet, I’d be sleeping with no bedding much of the time.

I couldn’t live without a flat sheet. That’s the only thing I want touching my face besides the pillow. I leave it long enough to fold over the blankets/duvet.
I often get hot and fold ( never throw ) the blankets off me and just have the sheet over me. Until I want the blankets back.
I never make a mess of the bedding. I have to have it neat, evenly spread, something about the weight evenly distributed.
