I never sample more than one grape and if someone else is already sampling, I will ask them if they are sweet rather than test them myself. Do you sample grapes before buying? How about any other produce?

Just an occasional grape. I've never seen anyone else do more than that. I can't imagine taking a bite of an apple or breaking off a piece of celery to taste test it.

I was reading somewhere that people do it also with berries and cherries. I can't imagine opening a berry container to sample the fruit and I've never done it with cherries.

To be fair, I rarely grocery shop, but I just have never seen anyone munching on something in the produce aisle. Maybe in Walmart??... but not in my grocery store.

I have in the past, maybe one grape or a cherry to see if they are sweet. The other day though I saw a family walking through the store eating cherries. I wanted to yell at them, they weigh that you know! And the worse, I saw a guy take a bite out of a broccoli and throw the remainder back into the pile. I told a store personnel, but I don't know if anything was done. ETA - These did not happen at a Wal-Mart. The broccoli incident happened at a healthier grocery store.

I usually just smell them. If they smell sweet, they usually are.

I never have, no. My husband will try a grape before buying. He always pretends to be very particular about how his grapes should taste.

I will always taste a grape first. I hate when they are soft or flavorless and they seem to be 50-50 in quality so before I pay $3.99/lb for them I will eat one.

I wouldn’t dream of it unless the shop keeper offered me a sample.

Nope. That’s theft IMO unless it’s from a sample tray.

Never - and people who "taste just one grape" annoy the crap out of me (firstly ONE is bullshit people put one in their mouth and then get more, so now there's saliva on the grapes as well are dirty finger germs) They are grapes, you already know what they taste like and if they are in season, then they will be fine.
How many people go through one store and they all take a grape, then I want to buy grapes and a dozen dirty fingers flecked with saliva have already been there and all the bunches at the top are semi skeletonized and they look too disgusting to buy...because the people who take the ONE grape, don't buy that bunch, no they go and buy a "perfect" bunch that no-one has eaten from. Because of this then shops are forced to put them into sealed plastic containers...so more plastic crap to clog up our environment.
If the store has a container out with samples of fruit, then that's fine...but even then I won't taste because who knows who may have touched them (and what sort of questionable hygiene habits they had) before I got there. There's people scratching their balls in the car or picking their nose or didn't wash their hands after the bathroom and they are all putting their hands in there tasting ONE grape? Nope, not on and no-one should do be doing it. Yes, on the rare occasion some grapes look unadulterated enough to buy, I wash them before I eat them, but I still don't want to eat grapes that were once covered in other people's bacteria, even if they are now technically clean after I washed them.

Never. And I have never seen anyone eating the produce at any grocery store. That's not ok, "sample" or not.

nope - that's stealing unless the store has samples out. I don't eat anything in the store before I pay for it - and on the rare occasion when my kids were small and they needed a snack, I would purchase the snack and keep the reeipt with me while we finished shopping.
It drives me nuts to see parents grab a bag of grapes or a bunch of bananas or a box of cookies and let their kids munch their way through the grocery store...produce is weighed and the cashier can't weigh what your kid has eaten and judging from the empty wrapper stuffed on shelves, no one is paying for the cookies etc...either

My grocery store told me to sample the grapes after I returned some a few years ago (they were SO bad!).
I once saw a boy, about 6 or 7, standing in front of the broccoli and he just turned his head around and took a big chomp out of it then turned back around without his mom noticing and went on his way. It was pretty funny!

No, I would never taste test anything in a store unless it was offered. I once saw a woman give her toddler twins honey crisp apples to lick while she was shopping in the produce section. She returned them to the pile when she moved on!!! Yes, I told the store assistant.
Recently I saw an old woman looking furtively around while hunched over the broccoli. She was removing all the florets and placing them in a bag so she wouldn’t have to pay for the weight if the stems which she would probably throw away anyway.
As much as I wish stores wouldn’t use so much plastic wrap on their produce. At least I know it’s not covered in someone else’s saliva.

Absolutely not. I never sample grapes or any other produce. And it bugs the crap out of me when I see people "sampling" grapes and other stuff.

I ALWAYS taste a grape or two because my store is not to be trusted. The sign will say "sweet red grapes" and then they'll be sour. I have brought back too many grapes to take my chances now. That's the only thing I'll taste though. Obviously we can't take a bite of an apple, although I wish I could... I've returned lots of apples also...I get home and discover that they're dry and "woody". ick. The store manager at my regular grocery told me to taste a grape before I buy. She said that one day as I was standing there returning my latest batch of disgusting grapes. She said go ahead and taste one and save myself the trip back to the store.

I sincerely wish they would be fine in season! Half the time they are mushy or sour or just taste like shit. If grapes were consistent quality I wouldn’t ever taste them. Even at our highest quality grocery stores with consistently good produce the grapes are inconsistent at best.

My supermarket doesn't have a problem with sampling a grape and I've asked the produce worker before. I've never done it at Costco, TJ's or other places so perhaps different rules at other locations/stores/chains?

My mom did this when I was a kid. Once I realized you pay by the pound, then no. I’ve been known to eat a donut and take the paper to the register to pay for it.

You know, I don't think I've ever asked a worker in the produce department and had them NOT ask me if I'd like a sample. I'm not asking for a sample, more general questions about the item. They always offer to cut open a peach or apple or whatever it is I'm asking about. Well, maybe not a watermelon or a slice of onion, but most other things.
