I am trying to watch well-known and well-loved movies that I haven't watched before. A lot of 'classics'if you will.
Today I watched Steel Magnolias. I was 10 years old when it came out, so never watced it then, but I've always heard how sad it was.
PEOPLE ARE NOT WRONG!!
I loved it, it made me laugh and it broke my heart.
Sally Field by the casket..... Olympia Dukakis telling Sally Field to punch Shirley MacClaine was the best writing ever!
I had to write down tissues on my shopping list because of this!
Should I watch Beaches next?? I've heard similar rumors about that one!

So glad you watched it - such a great movie.
Yes, make sure you have tissues for Beaches

Yes - the scene at the end with Sally Fields is definitely tissue consuming.
Beaches was the same for me - lots and lots of tissues!

You will need a box of tissues for Beaches.
It is a good movie, but not as great as Steel Magnolias.
Have you watched Fried Green Tomatoes yet?

Steel Magnolias is one of my favorite movies. I know I watched it at least a dozen times.
Have plenty of tissues handy for "Terms of Endearment". It is another great performance by Shirley McClaine.

I haven’t seen it in years, and I have a feeling my DD has never seen it. Hmm, think I know what we’ll be doing when she next comes home.

That Sally Field scene I've watched maybe twice. I saw it in theaters, and I've watched the movie a million times since but I have to fast forward because it makes me cry so hard.

Beaches is a must.. such a good movie... and holy moly I think I cried harder on this one that Steel Magnolias.. it's a close call.. I haven't seen Beaches in a long time. Doesn't seem like that play that one as much as Steel Magnolias..

I saw the play Steel Magnolias before the movie came out and then I saw the movie. Both were the best. I love that movie.

I just rewatched Beaches not too long ago. It's sad - but not nearly as sad as Steel Magnolia's for me. But a lot has to do to how much you relate to the mother/daughter dynamic vs the bff.

I haven't watched it in a while but I love that movie!! I ugly cry every single time. One of my friends & I took one of those which character are you quizzes and we consistently come up as Ouiser and Clairee. I didn't care for Beaches though. The only thing I remember about seeing it was that at some point I looked around the theater and everyone else was sobbing. I never watched it again after that, I might feel differently now.

I love those movies! Bridges of Madison County made me cry in the end. Saw it with DH. Went back with 4 other women and I sat in the middle with a box of kleenex...

Another vote for Fried Green Tomatoes if you haven't seen it. I just watched it for the first time last year, I couldn't believe I had waited so long to finally watch it.
YES on Beaches (and you'll definitely need a kleenex or 12)

Steel Magnolias is a favorite of mine too! Back in the VHS days, I wore mine out I watched it so much. It’s such a timeless movie about love, friendship and family. 💕

I had a full-on breakdown in the parking lot after watching that in the theater. I was dealing with some stuff at the time, and that movie was the straw that broke the crying camel's back.
I try to avoid voluntarily watching things that trigger my cry mechanism, because I can't just cry appropriately about that scene in the movie, that page in a book... I gather up the last 4 years of sadness in my life and rehash them, in an epic sob-fest that leaves me hungover and puffy and exhausted.

Steel Magnolias has a special place in my heart. It was filmed and the author and his real family this was based on, is 75 miles from where I was born and grew up. Not only that but Natchitoches is where my aunt raised her 3 kids and spent most of her adult life.
This is especially timely because my aunt died Sunday and will be buried tomorrow. She wasn't in the movie but she did work behind the scenes. I love seeing a few of the scenes around Natchitoches.

I hated Bridges of Madison County. She was screwing around on a truly descent husband who did nothing to deserve it and then if I remember correctly she left information on the affair for her children to find after she died. She was a jerk.

Steel Magnolias makes me ugly cry. The part that gets me is not the part that gets everyone else though. When Shelby is sent to the hospital and Sally Field is walking down the corridor really fast to get to her, makes me think of my mother. She used to do that...when she could, whenever she was getting ready to take on the world.
My mother has really let herself go and just given up in the past 10 years and she isn't even 70.

It's only been in the last couple of years that I've been able to watch Steel Magnolias without crying during the funeral scene. But no matter how many times I watched it and cried I always laughed more tears when it got to the funny part.

they don't make movies like that anymore. I am so tired of all the superhero and action and fantasy and sci-fi movies. After reading this thread, I am going to go watch all these classics in the coming weeks.

Steel Magnolias is my favorite movie ever! No idea how many times I have watched it and I still ugly cry every time. I need to rewatch Beaches. I have only seen it once and I don’t remember loving it. Another one I love is Stepmom with Susan Sarandon and Julia Roberts.

I have only seen it once and I don’t remember loving it. It is one of my faves for sure. Like you, I saw Beaches in the theater when it came out and remember it was good, but it isn't the kind of movie I want to see again and again. I watch Steel Magnolias (and Fried Green Tomatoes) ever time I catch it on. I will sit there and watch it as if I have never seen it before and I will cry as if I didn't know what was coming.

Fortunately the cemetery scene in Steel Magnolias makes me laugh more than cry, but Beaches leaves me sobbing every time .

This was the movie that made me let out a huge sob in the theater. It was out before I could stop it....which made the people around me giggle. I was so embarrassed! I just can’t watch sad movies anymore. They aren’t entertaining to me. I had to give up watching Grey’s Anatomy because I was tired of crying during every episode.

I gather up the last 4 years of sadness in my life and rehash them, in an epic sob-fest that leaves me hungover and puffy and exhausted. This describes me exactly! Especially if it’s about abuse or shitty parents. I ugly cried in the theater during Rocketman cause Elton’s parents were so shitty to him.
