The closet door thread got me thinking - what is missing from your house that you wish you had?
I love our house. Love, love, love it. BUT it has no coat closet! All the bedrooms are on the 2nd and 3rd floors so we really miss having a closet downstairs. We do have a little hallway back by the door to the garage and we've put up coat hooks and bench with baskets for winter accessories. But I wish I could close that off! In the winter its like walking through the wardrobe in The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe.
Not missing, but inconvenient is the door to a giant closet in the hallway of the 2nd floor. It opens IN to the closet which takes up a third of the space.
What do you think is missing from your house?

A bathroom on the main floor. It was the biggest concession I made when we purchased this house and it continues to drive me insane, as I knew it would. But we had to go with what was on the market at the time and it was hard enough to get this one. There were 11 other bids on the house when we bought it. Next place will be a ranch!

Countertops on all the surfaces of my kitchen. We added cabinets when we moved, and shifted the footprint of the kitchen. We put down plywood when we moved in with the intention of adding countertops within the first couple of months. Yeah, it's been 3 years and I'm still working on plywood.

I wish my hallway had a light switch at both ends. It isn't a long hallway, but the master bedroom is at the end of the hall and there is no switch there. There is only a switch at the beginning of the hall (near the living room).
What is so odd is that the half bath is a walkthrough (one side walks into the master bedroom and the other side walks into the kitchen of all places) - that is fine - it is small, maybe 3 feet wide and there are switches on both sides but only one is really needed since it isn't very big. They put switches on both sides there but it never occurred to them to put switches at both ends of the hall.

A pantry. I have designated kitchen cabinets for canned goods/spices and a kitchen drawer for snacks, but I really wish I had a pantry, as I feel like I struggle for space to store food. I also wish we had another bedroom, as we really need the extra space! I feel like if I was looking for a house now, my wish list would be so much different. When I bought my current house, my only real priorities were having more than one bathroom, a two car garage and central A/C.

I adore our quirky little house, but I've lived abroad and there are a few things I wish we could have brought back with us. Top-most on the wish-list are a double garage (heck, a single garage would be nice instead of a 1960s cupboard that doesn't fit a whole car), a utility room, space for built-in closets in the bedrooms, a dedicated spare room for guests, and a wrap-around veranda.

I wish we had a bigger entryway. I have a smallish mat but basically one enters into our living room.

Curtains/shutters/blinds at my kitchen window at the moment. My blinds are old and the cords have started breaking so I’ve taken them down. It’s not a busy street and we know most people who go past and might look in but in the winter I want to be able to close/shut something for coziness as much as anything!

a linen closet in the master bathroom
the light switch going into the guest bathroom should be immediately on the left as you walk in. The door opens in and on the right side. Past that on the right is the light switch. I've lived there over 3 years and still reach up with my left hand as I walk in the doorway.

A garage. I would love a way to walk into the house without getting soaked or have some storage space outside of the living area. Also, a laundry chute. We have a split level with the main areas upstairs, the laundry room is downstairs and as I’m getting older (not ancient, but not as young as I was when we bought it), I could really use an easier way to take the laundry down and back upstairs.

Were missing a closet in one of the bedrooms, an entryway, (its just a hallway) and a pantry. The kitchen is a galley kitchen, and its like its not a part of the rest of the apt. It doesn't get any of the A/C in summer. Were moving next year. 🙂

I wish my master bath had a vanity area for me to do my hair and make up. My chair sits in front of my sink (yeah for double sinks) all day. First world problems

A giant walk in pantry. I would like an entire room for food and appliance storage. I have tons of storage in my kitchen but would much rather have it in a separate pantry.

A full master bath. It has a tiny half bath but I wish it were full. Of course it's a hundred year old house....I should be happy it has indoor plumbing Also an attached garage, we have a small detached one but it makes no sense to park there because it's further back, it's easier to just park in the drive (which is good b/c the mower/bikes/pool pump/tools/etc takes up most of it anyhow )

A garage. It's the first thing I'd do if I won the lottery. We would only have room for a one car, maybe extra deep, but not wider.

Storage. I would love to have more storage. DH built a pantry in the kitchen and a closet in my office, but we didn't have the space to do a bigger pantry and that would have been great. I cook a lot and have various appliances and gadgets. Plus, we have other stuff that needs to be stored. I need more closets, people!

A sink in the laundry room. There is only a small amount of counter space next to the washer, not really enough room to add a sink. 90% of the time I don’t miss a sink, but there ar e times it would really be handy.

LOL, we have a laundry chute that we NEVER use! Partly because we sort our clothes in baskets in our closet before we take them down to the main floor laundry to wash them, and partly because the top of the chute is locates in DD’s second floor main bathroom and empties in a closet in the hall on the main floor nowhere even close to the laundry room. So to use it I’d end up having to haul it all to her bathroom, stuff it all down the chute and sort all that dirty stuff again, ugh. NO. (And what’s REALLY dumb is that the master bedroom closet is directly above the laundry room, and both spaces were added on to the house less than ten years before we bought it. So why they didn’t have the laundry chute put in the master closet or in the adjacent master bath, and dump directly down into the laundry room is beyond me. So dumb.) To answer the question in the OP, there are two things this house is missing IMO. One is a basement bathroom that DH convinced me to overlook when we were considering putting in an offer, telling me he could add one. Only to backpedal on that promise almost immediately after we bought it, saying, “Oh, I’d have to tear up the concrete to do it, so no. Not happening.” Ugh. The other thing this house should have had is a walk out basement. Our neighbors on either side both have walk outs but ours is buried into the hill. I have a basement studio and haul big stuff in and out all the time and really wanted a walk out for that purpose. He assured me that it wouldn’t be that big a deal not having a walk out, except it’s been a HUGE PITA over the years dragging all my stuff up and down the freaking stairs. And guess who never, EVER helps? Yeah, thanks a million for that, DH. One other thing this house didn’t have but now does is a mud room. We had the big closet just inside the garage service door, it was just totally not functional when we bought the house. We pulled out the stupid Rubbermaid wire shelves and hanging rods on three sides and installed built in shelving, two rows of coat hooks, a bench and a column of storage cubbies. So, so, SO much better! And it wasn’t even that expensive. For the $1100 it cost we should have done it right away.

I wish my house had linen closet and separate laundry room/pantry. My laundry and pantry are combined and I hate it. I also wish my laundry/pantry had a pocket door. It has a door that opens out into the kitchen that my DH is incapable of ever closing. I keep threatening to take it off.

More driveway and less grass to mow. We could have moved the house farther back on the lot when we built it to have more driveway space. Instead we have a lot of backyard and not enough parking.

We have only been in our house for a month and a half and LOVE LOVE LOVE it, but would like to look into adding at least a 1/2 bath in the basement (beautifully finished basement that we have made ready for guests - and NO bathroom down there LOL) and a laundry shoot would be marvelous!! Although this house certainly helps me get my exercise. LOL

I cook a lot and have various appliances and gadgets. Plus, we have other stuff that needs to be stored. I need more closets, people! This was number one on my MUST HAVE list when we were house hunting. We crossed off a ton of houses because they didn’t have adequate closets and storage. We moved from a house that had literally ONE tiny closet under some stairs to a house that has TEN closets (four of them big enough to be considered walk in), plus a huge unfinished utility room. Oh, and a four car garage. Guess we really were serious about our storage!

stairs to the upper part of our basement and finished walls/floors in that part.. a previous owner broke out the slab foundation under the back half of the house. we are on a hillside.. and it was a homemade amatuer job. the floors are rough and not complete (have some dirt) and the wall is thin. it has no stairs to it.. just a 2 ft step up.. and since it destroyed the foundation, we had to have a foundation wall put in at the back of the house at great cost (all hand dug).. I wish to rebuild the basement stairs and put stairs into it. repave the entire space. make it useful.. as it is it is just damp. and holds our furnace and hot water tank.
the rest of the house we remodeled and it is pretty good.

A second bathroom (or 1/2 bath) here too. The house is also missing the door to the craft room/office.
