I've always had oily skin prone to breakouts and always used the same sorts of products (salicylic acid, benzol peroxide etc) recently I had a good look at my skin and realised I had dry patches and the make-up remover I was using didn't clean my skin properly. As a result I started googling skin care products and routines and I ended up looking more closely at some of the newer Asian beauty (AB) products. They like to have shiny/dewy skin and there's a Korean Beauty 10-step skincare routine. I have changed my routine significantly based on my recent travels around the internet beauty skincare sites, although I don't quite do 10 steps, but around 7 in the AM and 5-6 in the PM. The biggest change I made was taking off make-up and I now double cleanse, I use an oil based cleanser first and then a water based one. - Oil cleanser - Clinique take the day off (only if wearing make-up) - Foam/cream cleanser - COSRX - Low pH Good Morning Gel Cleanser Then I added an exfoliating toner: - Glycolic Acid 7% Toning Solution (I also have some PIXI Glow Tonic on order that I will alternate) Next a couple of actives, I alternate between: - The Ordinary Niacinamide 10% + Zinc 1% - Timeless Skin Care - 20% Vitamin C + E Ferulic Acid Serum - Sunday Riley Good Genes Lactic Acid Treatment Then I use a Hyaluronic Acid serum then a light moisturiser and finally a sunscreen for daytime. When I'm working nights, I don't need a sunscreen so I use Bobbi Brown Vitamin Enriched Face Base as a moisturiser/primer Then I put on my make-up Once a week I've been using a chemical peel: - The Ordinary AHA 30% + BHA 2% Peeling Solution, followed by a hydrating AB sheet mask (trying out a different one each time) At night I cleanse first as above then use: - Sunday Riley Luna Sleeping Night Oil - Sunday Riley Good Genes Lactic Acid Treatment - LANEIGE - Water Sleeping Mask (which I LOVE) If someone had told me to change my skin care to a 7 step routine a few months ago I would have told them to go jump...lol, but here I am. It's already made such a massive difference, my skin feels so soft and smooth, the tone & colour are more even and the redness is gone and it looks really smooth when I have make-up on too. Has anyone else switched up their routine lately? Tried any AB products yet? Recent skincare purchases you're loving?

I've really simplified my routine. I'm just washing twice with a foaming cleanser, using a glycolic acid serum and then a moisturiser and eye cream.
My skin looks better than it did when I was using a ton of products, it's not clogged or breaking out all the time.

That is a lot of steps. I would love to have less blotchiness, but I know I could never commit to all those steps! I wash with cetiphil, use a makeup remover from philosophy. Moisturize with Clinique in am. Use a foundation with spf. That’s it. I’m horribly lazy when it comes to my face.

I've really simplified my routine I'm the antithesis of simplification! Although that's what I was doing 3 x Paula's choice products twice a day for several years, but it wasn't working for me. Luckily there's some more options now that have core ingredients that can help, not just fancy creams that don't do much. I’m horribly lazy when it comes to my face I probably would be if I had good skin, but it's always been bad, first acne as a teen, then hormonal breakouts, plus rosacea. Always red and blotchy.

I use a lot of the same products that you do, but I use most of my serums at night. My foundation does not wear well (I have tried several, along with primers and powders) so I have been experimenting with my day skincare routine to see if that will help. I keep trying to pin down a more set schedule that alternates the products, but so far I am not that organized. Also, some days I feel lazy and just keep it simple, other days I do more. Here is a general breakdown:
Night--double cleanse with Tatcha one step camelia cleansing oil then Cerave foaming face wash Tatcha Essence
An exfloliator (either Paula's Choice 2% BHA, Biologique Recherge lotion P50 W (just got this and don't know how much it is helping yet), or Sunday Riley Good Genes) The Ordinary Buffet and/or Niacinimide--I am a little confused about when to use these since their website says not to use with any actives, but lots of people are doing so with good results. I was using them in the morning and may try that again now that my skin is not quite as oily. They have HA in them and I think it tends to make my skin super oily/dewy throughout the day.
Moisturizer--I have quite a few that I have been trying as I go through my stash of deluxe samples from beauty boxes. Currently using Ole Henrickson transformation cream.
If I am feeling like my skin is more dry or I want to take more time, I will use Tatcha Camelia oil or a sleeping mask (I have Laneige, clinique and Ahava sleeping masks/packs from various beauty boxes but am not sure they actually do much for me).
I also have a prescription for Retin-A that I need to try again. I have a hard time getting past the peeling stage. I also stopped using it in the summer since I am outside a lot more.
Eye cream--recently started using The Ordinary's Argirilene on my 11 lines. I use PTR 360 eye cream or Dermalogica eye cream everywhere else.
Morning--Wash with Cerave foaming. Tatcha essence. Then Paula's Choice age defying sunscreen. Eye cream.
I need to do a better job with masks and weekly treatments. I was doing a mask once a week and TLC Babyfacial once a week but have been lazy about it lately. I also recently got The Ordinary peeling product but haven't used it yet.

Any time I change anything up I regret it with break-outs and dry patches. I turned 51 a few days ago and was having more break-outs than my 19yo daughter. I've gone back to my simple routine and my skin is great again. I wash with Kiss My Face olive oil soap, witch hazel, and moisturize with Oil of Olay Regenerist.

I’m another one who simplified her routine. My skin got worse the more products I tried I went back to just using Dove soap, Thayers witch hazel, Mad Hippie Vitamin C serum & Bliss moisturizers. I also use a Bliss mask 2-3 times a week. My skin looks better than it has in years.

I have pretty good skin, so it makes me so very lazy about skin care.
On a perfect day, I was my face with a Philosophy cleanser, and use The Ordinary Hydrolauric Acid 2%, Buffet, and their primer.
At night I use the Ordinary glycolic acid, Granactive Retinoid and rose oil.
On many days, I am lucky to remember to take off my make up.

My foundation does not wear well Yes that's the main reason I'm only using one active on the days I wear foundation. On days where I'm at home I will layer a few more. I've just bought some Too Faced Peach Perfect foundation which is quite 'dry' and so far has been holding up really well with a few products underneath it. (I have Laneige, clinique and Ahava sleeping masks/packs from various beauty boxes but am not sure they actually do much for me). I really love the Laneige, my skin is so calm when I wake up, not a spot of red anywhere and feels so smooth and moist. I think this is going to be a must have for me from now on. I also have a prescription for Retin-A that I need to try again. I have a hard time getting past the peeling stage I have bought Tretinoin OTC in the past and now that I'm learning more, I realize I applied it all wrong. The reading I've been doing says to make sure your face is completely dry (I was using it straight after a shower) and you can also mix a small amount with your moisturiser or HA at first to "buffer" it and it avoids the peeling stage. I might give it another try at some stage. I haven't started an eye cream yet - but was looking at the Glow Recipe avocado & retinol one. I've layered the TO niacinamide with other actives and haven't had any issues.

I’m not sure if layering the serums with actives would cause irritation or if the problem is that it would make the ingredients less potent? I wish they gave more info on what the potential problems could be. Peach perfect is one of the better foundations for me as well.

I was just thinking on the weekend I wanted to start a thread like this.
I don't have a skincare routine. I wash my face in the shower each morning with a goats milk soap. I am soon to be 53 and I have noticed that my skin is dull and the bags under my eyes are more pronounced.
I have dry sensitive skin and with the cold weather coming it will only get drier. I don't wear makeup very often except mascara which I wear everyday.
Any suggestions for something to moisturize and brighten sensitive skin. The easier the better. I am willing to upgrade my routine but don't think I would keep it up it there were too many steps involved. Thanks in advance for any suggestions

plus rosacea. Always red and blotchy. I was diagnosed with rosacea years ago by my dermatologist. I even used a series of prescription creams to treat it. I had that redness for years though. Now, it's virtually gone... even with heat and exercise which used to be two of my biggest triggers. Some red wines still trigger me -- I haven't been able to figure out why some do and some don't. What has changed is my skincare. I had used 'good' products all those years - Clinique, Estee Lauder, Lancome, and the like. When I switched to an essentially all-vegan line, it made a HUGE difference in my redness. I used MyChelle for several years and still keep their retinal serum in my rotation. But I've switched much of the rest to The Ordinary brand (and I used very few products overall). I am convinced that there are chemicals in most conventional lines that were causing my redness. (I read labels and made notes extensively but it's impossible to isolate what as they call things by so many different names.) I do avoid using much if any vitamin C on my face and no retinoids/retin A at all as it's too harsh for me. I also avoid any products that physically exfoliate (beads, crushed seeds, etc). I use the DERMAdoctor Kakadu C pads only about once a week to exfoliate. No vitamin C serums for me. All that to say, perhaps your 'rosacea' is chemically induced, too. I stop all other products cold turkey and went with the simplest, cleanest routine I could until it all cleared up. Now if I want to try something new, I add ONE products at a time and give it a few weeks before I make a determination on it. It sometimes takes repeated use for it to irritate my skin. This is just food for thought for you. I'm happier with my skin now than I maybe ever have been before in my life.

Trouble is mine was getting worse with the simple routine, and now with all the extra steps it's almost gone. I would get out of a warm shower and my face would be covered in red splotches, now after a shower it's almost all white with just two small pinkish spots on my checks and all the other red splotches have completely gone.

I am horribly inconsistent in sticking to a routine, but when I do my full routine it is: AM - - wash with foaming cleanser (currently Lancome Gel Eclat)
- Vitamin C serum
- SPF
PM - balm or oil cleanser
- foaming cleanser
- acid exfoliant (Pixi Glow Tonic or REN Ready Steady Glow)
- spritz (LRP Serozinc is a favourite)
- essence (RMK Skintuner Moist) - probably entirely unnecessary but I enjoy it!
- eye cream
- lip balm
- serum/active - I currently rotate between Sunday Riley Good Genes, a retinol, and Odacite Radiance Effect Concentrate)
- moisturiser
Once a week I'll add in a mask - usually skip the acid/spritz steps when I do that. I like the Body Shop Amazonian Acai mask, or if I want something more hydrating I'll usually just use an extra thick layer of a moisturiser sample (I have a bunch I'll never use up otherwise).
If my skin feels like it needs extra hydration I'll use a hyaluronic acid serum before the moisturiser. Occasionally I'll use a facial oil either instead of or after my moisturiser.
I'd like to add some niacinamide in there somewhere too. Thinking about trying this: Flawless Nightly Serum when I've finished my current retinol. When I'm slacking, the AM routine usually sticks but in the PM I might end up with just micellar cleanser, lip balm & moisturiser. I'm in a lazy period at the moment and it definitely shows on my skin so I need to try get back in the habit. I'm not clear from this whether you're washing your face after removing makeup in the evening? SPF is pretty clogging so double cleansing is recommended to be sure you're getting it all off. Definitely moisturise in the evening too.

I am willing to upgrade my routine but don't think I would keep it up it there were too many steps involved. Thanks in advance for any suggestions I also have dry sensitive skin, but am older (62). After working with my facialist, I have found a fairly simple routine work that has my skin looking good. Much more even skin tone, dry patches kept at bay. The key for me has been the glycolic acid and peptide serums and using the Clarisonic regularly. I get lazy and start skipping any of those and my face revolts. Evenings: - Cleanse with Clarisonic (delicate brush) and a gentle cleanser. Kiehl's Ultra Facial Cleanser is my go to. - Under eye cream (IT ByeBye Under Eye Brightening Cream) - Glycolic acid (10%) - Leniege Lip Mask - Moisturizer (currently rotate between Cerave, Kiehl's Ultra Facial or Embryolisse) Morning: - Splash of cool water on my face and pat dry. - Under eye cream - Peptide serum - Moisturizer (Kiehl's Powerful Wrinkle Reducing Cream w/SPF 30)

My skincare regimen is a bit of a mishmash.
I wash every night with DHC Deep Cleansing Oil and DHC Mild Soap. I find most night creams to be too heavy, but if I’m feeling dry I’ll put on a bit of Bio Oil or DHC Olive Virgin Oil before I go to sleep.
If I’m just kicking around the house during the day with no makeup, I’ll put on some Garnier MoistureBomb. I don’t like how it feels under makeup, though, so I use Olay Complete (with SPF) or Clinique Dramatically Different moisturizer on makeup days. I also use Bobbi Brown Vitamin Enriched Face Base under my foundation.

I am willing to upgrade my routine but don't think I would keep it up it there were too many steps involved. Thanks in advance for any suggestions Neutrogena Hydroboost is supposed to be good and I believe they have a new brightening formula. I'd add a toner. These days the new lotions called 'toners' are different to those horrible Clinique ones that were (probably still are) mainly alcohol that stung your skin and dried it out totally. Maybe try the PIXI Glow Tonic: That will start to exfoliate the dead cells and your skin will start to look brighter. The Hydroboost mentioned above is very popular, although make sure you get Hydro Boost, Gel-Cream, Extra-Dry Skin, because that's the fragrance-Free one & Neutrogena are notorious for shoving in heaps of fragrance. I've been trialling one of their sunscreens and the fragrance is almost enough to put me off. Also consider the CeraVe line of products in all the reading I've done people with dry skin seem to love this range, it's relatively inexpensive and gets good reviews. It contains ceramides which is often the ingredient the more expensive creams use as a selling point. I've been using their hand cream and I love it. Then as you get used to that, consider adding in a Vit C serum.

Oooh I like the sound of that! I did buy an azelaic acid gel but it made anything I put on top of it pill, so it was useless in my morning routine and I gave up using it. I wonder if this would be better? If it works it might be a good alternative to the budget busting Good Genes Alternatively you could try The Ordinary's one...(much cheaper!) and I've been happy with it in my routine.

I would definitely consider The Ordinary as an alternative, on the budget friendly side Garden of Wisdom also have a good option. Their Vit C is supposed to be excellent too. Not sure if you can get their stuff over your way tho...

Ha! I find these skincare threads fascinating. It's all very trial and error for us all, is is not? So true! For example I've really liked all The Ordinary serums I've tried, so I got their moisturizer as well, but within a few minutes of putting it on, my cheeks were bright red. Tried it a couple of times with the same result - so obviously something in there doesn't agree with me.

I’m loving this thread! I’ve become more disciplined with skincare this year and have seen some good results so far. My main concern is some mild hyperpigmentation. I’ve tried The Ordinary’s Ascorbic Acid 8% with Alpha Arbutin 2% and I love the feel of the formula. But my face started getting all orange from the Vitamin C! Does anyone have another TO Vitamin C to recommend? I’m currently waiting for their Azelaic acid serum to arrive.

I'm also using the AB sunscreens which are nice and light not as gluggy as those mostly available here. I'm waiting on a delivery which will have a tube of PURITO - Centella Green Level Unscented Sunscreen which I looking forward to trying. I haven't quite found my ideal sunscreen yet. -------- I wanted to link to this too: The Ordinary regimen guide & routine ordering tips

I used to use glycolic etc but have in the last 9 months started using tretinoin - it’s the single thing that’s made an enormous difference to my skin now I am on daily 0.05. I only use tret, hyaluronic acid and Elemis pcm at night. I’m using vit c and a moisturising sunscreen in the day. I use either Aldi hot cloth cleanser or Clinique take the day off cleanser, depending on whether I’ve worn makeup. .

OMG, when i think of the stuff i used to do to my skin and put on my skin when i was younger..... but the great thing NOW is that being consistent with a skin care has really revitalized my skin. the major game changer during the daytime is the sunscreen. i used to hate wearing it because of how greasy and sticky it was. now i use a japanese sunscreen and i love it's weightlessness and very easy wear ability.

The Ordinary as an alternative, on the budget friendly side Garden of Wisdom also have a good option. Their Vit C is supposed to be excellent too I tried TO vit C and hated it. Ended up tossing the tube. It had an awful smell and I didn't care for the texture. Currently I'm using the Peter Roth Thomas Potent-C Power Serum (sometimes switch it out with the glycolic). It has 20% Vit C, 3% Vit E and 2% Ferulic Acid. The smell is better than TO and I like the texture of the serum.
