Yes to what evevryone else before me has said.
I got the flu about 23-24 years ago. Missed Thanksgiving, and was sick through the New Year. Finally went to the Dr and I had bronchitus. I have never ever skipped a year since. And I have little tolerance for those who don't get the shot (unless there is a medical reason).
I got mine about 4 weeks ago, wanted it in my system before traveling internationally (airplane germs). I was in the pharmacy yesteday and the number of people waiting for a shot was a little nutso.

DH and I got ours a month ago. The last time I got the flu, I went from feeling fine to flat on my back in a couple of hours. Had 104 degree fever off and on for 3 days. Awful. I’ve gotten the shot every year since and so far, no more flu.
My brother had a big, strapping, healthy friend killed by the flu a couple of years ago. If I hadn’t already been a believer in getting the shot, that would have done it for me.

Got my flu shot earlier this week and got the pneumonia shot in August (due to my immune system issues).

And FYI I hate how people call a stomach bug the flu. Two totally different things. Exactly! When people refer to every little virus and cold as "the flu", it minimizes the gravity of actual influenza. The last time I had the flu (in my 30's), I felt like I was going to die. I was coughing up blood. I know the flu shot can be imperfect, as they have to guess at the strains, but I get it every year at work. No regrets.

Yes. The true flu (not a cold or a stomach bug) is horrible. My Mom is a nurse so we've gotten one since I was a kid. The one year I skipped, I had the flu so freaking back in February. I was out of work for a month. I have asthma and it seemed like my lungs and my body fought every illness that spring and I didn't feel like myself again until late summer.

This was the first year I got one. I am turning 60 and figured I should act my age and be responsible!

I work with kids. I get it every year. The school provides it for free. Exactly the same. Flu can run through a building like fire and I want no part of it.

I got one this year. I work on a college campus and have been knocked on my ass a few times in the past 7 years, so I'll try anything I can to avoid a full on flu. I think college kids must be second only to elementary kids in germ spreading.

Nope....never have and I've never had the flu. If it ain't broke, don't fix it. I’m curious...are your children vaccinated? I’m just wondering if this philosophy applies to all vaccines or just the flu shot.

I mean, if the car isn’t broken, why change the oil? Oh, to PREVENT damage from happening to your engine. Huh. Just like vaccines prevent illness in yourself AND those around you. But maybe a car is more valuable than human health and life?

I don't have a choice. At my employment you have to get ALL kinds of shots. So the flu one is a mandatory one. I really started getting the flu one regularly when I worked at my DD school.. then I moved to working at the grocery store.. so between the two I would wear bubble wrap if I had too.

I get the flu shot every year, for the same reasons other peas have stated. I'm also very prone to bronchitis and pneumonia...speaking of which, I haven't gotten my flu shot yet this year because I've had bronchitis and a cough for a month! I got a cold near the end of September, which went into my chest and I'm STILL getting over it. UGH! I've been to the doctor twice now for various meds (no antibiotics since it's viral) and may go back next week to have everything rechecked before I fly to visit DD#1 for Veteran's Day weekend. If I can get the flu shot at that time I will. Still coughing a little and have an irritated sore throat but not nearly to the level it was at a couple weeks ago.

I had a similar thought as I was getting in the car this afternoon.... of course I put my seatbelt on even though thus far I have never been in a serious crash and had an injury. Just like I cannot control the driving of other people who might crash into me, I cannot control the viral shedding of a person who has the flu and goes out in public (regardless of if/where I work or how much I am around certain people) . This whole thread really has me shaking my head as a healthcare provider.

Yes, because I do not have a compromised immune system that precludes me from getting it and herd immunity is a thing.
Basically, fucking science.

How many of you get the flu shot? I am the type of person that hates any type of medicine or putting anything in my body after having a bad reaction to a steroid once. But still, just don’t like it. But as I get older I feel like I might need a flu shot. My chiropractor is dead set against them and I am just curious what others think. Your chiropractor shouldn't be giving advice on vaccines if they're this uneducated. I'd think twice about letting them touch me, personally, based on that shitbag advice.

Dd has hypogammaglobulinemia and due to other medical conditions and severe allergies can not get the flu shot. Ds has severe allergies to ingredients in the flu shot and due to medical conditions can not get the nasal spray. Allergy/immunology told me bot to get it and I trust my doctor. The 1 time I had the shot I had the flu really bad. So 🤷♀️

Basically, you can thank the rest of us who DO get the vaccine because we protect your immunologically compromised family with herd immunity. So pass it on to your friends and fam, and frankly, in your case I'd make a strong argument with those close to me that they wouldn't be around my kids much unless they'd been vaccinated.

My kids are more at risk being at school then around friends and family. But that is life with medically complex rare conditions. Life itself is risky every day. Not going to keep us all in bubbles

Why in the world would you let someone who touches countless people/patients during flu season, and is unvaccinated against the flu, then lay his/her potentially flu-virus shedding hands on you? Especially when he tells his clients NOT to get vaccinated. That makes him/her a danger to society. I keep wanting to give chiropractors the benefit of the doubt as being valuable alternatives to traditional medicine and then another one goes off and spouts anti-science stuff like this and I’m back to thinking they are mostly just quacks.

Yes I get my flu shot. I work in healthcare so that is a given but I got my vaccine even before. I get it because influenza can be deadly. I get it for the babies too young to get the vaccine. I get it for those with allergies who cannot get the vaccine. I get it for the immuno-compromised. I get it to be part of the herd so I can protect those who cannot. Chiropractors have no business advising on vaccines. FTR I hate needles and am a huge wimp with injections and yet I am as fully vaccinated as I can be.

The flu shot is made from deactivated virus; it cannot infect you.

Thanks for the replies. My chiropractor didn’t tell me not to get one, she just said in conversation that she’d never get one. Was just curious as to what other people thought.

But as I get older I feel like I might need a flu shot. My chiropractor is dead set against them and I am just curious what others think. Yeah well, as others have said, you shouldn't be taking medical advice from a chiropractor. There's a good reason why most doctors would never refer anyone to see a chiropractor. I've been told that a lot of (most?) chiropractors are anti vaxxers, so again, don't take medical advice from him her. (Is that even true? I asked someone here whose husband is a chiropractor about the whole anti vaxxer / chiro thing, but she didn't respond.) In answer to your question: Yes I get the flu shot every year, and have done for probably 15 years. It helps that we get it for free at work, so I don't have to go out of my way to do it. I really don't understand the argument that people use, that they've never had the flu so why bother getting the flu shot. ![](//storage.proboards.com/5645536/images/G0Qxztyjs53n1ic_fEBG.jpg) Even before I started getting the flu shot, I had never had the flu, but I'm not naive enough to think I'm never going to get it. I have used the analogy that I've never been in a car accident where I've been thrown through the windscreen, but I'm still going to put my seatbelt on every time I get in the car to help prevent that from happening. I like elaine 's analogy too. Edited to change 'him' to 'her' after reading the OP's post just above mine - we were posting at the same time. And your first post was more than "she just said in conversation that she’d never get one", you said she was dead set against them. Ask her about childhood vaccines, just out of curiosity. I'd love to know her thoughts on that too.

I do not get it. 21 year veteran teacher. Never have gotten it. I do have asthma so 2 years ago, when I told my doctor I did not want the flu vaccine, he asked if I would get the pneumonia vaccine instead. I did. No regrets other than an arm that was sore for almost TWO years. Two years? Find that hard to believe. Mine was sore for maybe 3 days after the pneumonia shot. I think it was injected too high and in the wrong spot. I was not able to wakeboard, hook my bra, move my arm above my head. Happened after the shot. No other injury. It’s the only thing I can think of that caused it.
