When people add an s isn't it because you're saying "I'm going to the shop/store belonging to Aldi" = Aldi's store? As you would with "I'm going to the house belonging to Grandma = Grandma's"?
In the UK we had Woolworth chain and I can only ever remember hearing it called Woolworths.

Did you know Aldi is really said ALLdi! Never heard of that one. The name of the stores is taken from the name one of the brothers that founded Aldi .... ALbrecht- DIscount. It seems I say both....I'm going to Aldi but if someone asks me where I got something I say Aldis it doesn't bother me that others might get annoyed about it. In fact I wasn't aware that anyone did.

I think the same thing applies to THE Home Depot too. Depot means a place for the storage of large quantities of equipment, food, or goods. So turning that round it is a Depot for THE home.

"THE" Home Depot is the real name of the store though.... Take a look on their website. And I don't think people are saying "Aldi's" as a possessive, like "I went to Grandma's house". My regular grocery is called "Giant" and I don't say "I'm going to shop at Giant's". lol. -- I know I said "Aldi's" because I thought it was the correct name of the store. I've always heard it said that way so I just said it the same way since we don't have an Aldi store near me anyway. (although now we do! one just opened...I haven't been there yet). I just assumed "Aldi's" was the same as "Trader Joe's". And it turns out that the stores have some vague connection...same parent company or something. Anyway... after this thread I REALLY need to get out to the new Aldi (which sounds wrong...my fingers wanted to type "Aldi's", hahaha) that just opened here!

When I was growing up in NY, we always called the local Woolworth store, 4 blocks away, "The Five and Ten" (5 and 10 cents store). Can't remember ever calling it Woolworth or Woolworth's!

Huh. Well, considering it is "the store belonging to JC Penney", I feel fine calling it Penney's. Considering they will probably go out of business soon, I'm not going to worry about Peas being bothered by what I call it.

I'm pretty sure I say Aldi.
I call the other one Home de Pot.
In my native land, many call it WalMark. (I would never.)

I just say "hey I'm going to Home Depot later this morning...." Even though I know what its real name is. Same as I think "Aldi's" sounds better even though I know it's "Aldi". hahahaha I'm just a rebel I guess.

This is probably related to people adding 's to surnames. There's a meme going around on social media correcting the 's use on Christmas cards. You are not the Doe's. You are the Does. YASS!! The misuse of apostrophe 's drive 's me bonker 's ! The one that bugs me the most is how often " it's " has an unneeded one! Example: A dog and its owner. versus A dog and it's owner.

I am guilty of adding the s on Aldi. I shall work on this. I will never add "the" in front of Home Depot, I don't care what their marketing folk say. I cringe when I hear WalmartS. While we are on this--what about Smokey the bear mascot of the national park system? Smokey the Bear or Smokey Bear? He was Smokey THE Bear when I was introduced to him, so that is what I say. I understand that the parks dept has a campaign to remove "the" from the nomenclature. (Good luck with that for the old folks, I say.) There is no campaign to remove THE from Smokey Bear's name because THE was NEVER part of his name. What confuses people was a song that had THE in it to make it "sound" right to the songwriters. Now as I understand, recently, someone did redo the song to try to keep people from adding the "the".
I live in Lincoln County New Mexico where Smokey was born, rescued and buried. In fact, I went to the 75th birthday celebration this year and had birthday cake for a bear! It drives us nuts for people to add "the" to his name. It is SMOKEY BEAR!!!
