My 9 year old cat, Felix, who is the love of our lives, seemed "off" this afternoon. He was hiding behind his daddy's chair (weird place for him) and he was quiet......... Then he peed on a plastic bag on the floor (litter pellet bag)--VERY weird for him--he's never done that!!!! DD went to pick him up and he yelped in pain (weird!).
He laid on the floor and seemed very lethargic (weird!!). He wasn't even responding to his name. Normally he responds to every nickname, quickly! He seemed like he was falling into a very deep sleep. I called his vet and they were just about to close. They told me to rush him to the animal hospital because it could be a blockage (since he's a male cat).
We rushed him in. It's a urinary blockage. They said that if we were any later, he could have died--he's that blocked!! They're keeping him there until Monday, with a catheter and and IV of antibiotics. $1700 later (line of credit with them!), the vet called us and said that his intestines still felt too solid. She went back and checked his scans and saw a mass. Then she checked his xray and saw a mass in his chest. She thinks that he only has a few more weeks to live. She thinks that it's too late for surgery, etc.........
Is this normal? ? He NEVER shows signs of pain or slowing down. We call him "forever kitten" because that's how he behaves! He sleeps in bed with me and DH every single night. He follows us to the bathroom, sits there when we shower......... He has his own place at the dinner table! I can't stress how special he is (and we have 5 cats). He means the world to DH and me (and DD).......... How could this active, happy cat have cancer throughout his body without us knowing?? He eats, drinks, uses the litterbox, and seems fine! I don't get it, but we've been crying our eyes our for hours now.
Anyone have experience with this?? I just can't accept that at 9 years old, he might die any minute.

In my experience, pets are often very stoic when they are in pain. I have lost a few to having them seem good one day and then take a quick turn for the worse. Hugs to you.

I am so very sorry. 9 is too young. I am sorry about your beautiful boy. Our Kit seemed fine until one day she started sleeping in the kitchen floor by the window, someplace she never went because she couldn’t see what was going on and she was a busy body. Took her in thinking it was one thing, turned out she had a brain tumor. Cats are very good at hiding or not showing symptoms until it is too late. Felix sounds like a very special guy. I am so very sorry.

I'm so, so sorry!! I had this same experience with my cat, but he was 18 years old, not a young 9. My Jinx was super active, even for a very senior cat, but one morning I got up and he was laying by the door, drooling and not responding to his name. I scooped him up, took him to my vet, and they found a orange sized tumor in his abdomen. As another poster said, cats are very good at hiding things. Hugs to you, your family, and Felix as you all go through the the unknown.

So sorry. It hurts especially when the cat is younger. As others said cats tend to hide some symptoms. People who study cat behavior like Jackson Galaxy will tell you this as well. {Hugs}
I miss my kitties, but they were 15 and 20+ and lived good lives.

I’m so sorry. Our lab (I know, not a cat) was chasing balls in the field on Sunday and was gone by Wednesday. She has a tumor wrapped around her mesenteric artery. Animals have an instinctual need to mask their infirmities. It really is incredible how strong that need is.

I'm so sorry your sweet kitty is going through that.
In my experience, my kitties have been their normal selves, brave face and playful, until their bodies just couldn't anymore.
Big (((Hugs)))

Our 16 year old chonk Tuxi had had senior bloodwork dome just weeks before, perfect. Nothing showed up (I expected kidneys due to her age and always feared diabetes due to her weight). But her abdomen became swollen, and she was acting weird. Went to the vet, he sent us to another vet with a better ultrasound.
Masses on almost every organ. It had been growing for some time obviously but cats are SO stoic, They drained fluid to give us a little time to say goodbye, but 3 days later it was clearly time.
Very out of the blue for me as I usually lose my old cats to a slow decline of kidney failure, but similar to yours.
I’m so sorry- they add so much to our lives ❤️

I’m so sorry. I had a 19 yr old cat that was full of life. She was still super active, you would have never known her age.
One day I couldn’t find her she was hiding. When I opened a lunch eat wrapper and she didn’t come out I knew something was wrong.
I got her out from under the bed and she had a scratch on her cheek. I didn’t think anything of it. The next day it a mass bigger than a gum ball. In 2 short days she went from running around not to bring able to get up any eat. It was a fast growing cancer and we had to say goodbye. I’m forever grateful that it was so quick and she still had a great quality of life.
I’m so sorry for your kitty.

I'm so sorry you are going through this!
We went though it last year with our 9 year old kitty. I think it is so shocking because 9 seems too young for something like this to happen. Ours was the same, one day she was fine, the next she wasn't. She had two masses, one at the top of her intestines and I can't remember the 2nd as dh was handling the phone calls while I tried to keep myself together. Unfortunately nothing could be done about it. Somehow they hide their illnesses until it's too late.
