I was getting colour matched for a new foundation by this very nice Lebanese lady. She was the manager of the brand department and very personable. She found the perfect shade for me yay! But the store was sold out of it. She gave me two containers of samples but she wouldn't tell me the name or colour of the foundation. She told me she wrote it down in the book so she'd remember. She didn't want me to know what it was. If I want more product from testers I can have that. I just can't have the name of it. This can't be so difficult. I called today asking if the person on the floor could tell me the name of the colour she matched me to and she couldn't find my name in the book.
This makes no sense at all does it? The manager doesn't want me to know the name of the foundation so I can't buy it anywhere else. It's not even exotic or anything! It's just average foundation.
Please tell me you are laughing.

From a business stand point it makes perfect sense. To get the great match you have to come back and buy from them. If they tell you what you want to know they lose your sale to another store. Even if it is just average foundation they want the money from your sale especially since they took the time to help you.

So take the samples they gave you and go match it up at another store. Not sure why you have to have the foundation name.

Laughing about what? You probably took up a good chunk of this lady's time, no wonder she doesn't want you to then go and spend that $10 in another store. And what does the lady being Lebanese have to do with anything? or is your real point meant to be that Lebanese woman are irrational and so we need to laugh at them?

I can see where that's really frustrating for you, you just want to buy the stuff and they don't have it.
But from the sellers standpoint, even if it's not a super expensive item, they were the ones who took the time to match you up. Once they get the right stuff, you'll know the brand and color name.
I work for a plumber -you'd be amazed at the number of people who make appointments at local showrooms, take up a couple of hours of the consultant's time and then expect to take the list of fixtures with model numbers so they can try to order online for less. It's really not fair to the showroom.

Ok I want the name because I write the names of things down in my planner - products and stuff that works for me. The stuff that didn't. I track these kinds of things in my planner.

I did also buy $110 worth of stuff from her when I found out she was out of the foundation. It didn't seem like such a big deal. It still doesn't!

So when you buy it from them when it IS in stock, you'll have the name and color.

I am still not sure what the secret is, though.
I have to go there tomorrow to look at sheets so I will ask her again. There is an eyeshadow set I want anyway.

I should keep lists like you do, I've been known to buy the things that didn't work the first time and then remember the reason I didn't like it. Eventually they'll get your color into stock; until then, think of it as getting it free, since they seem to be willing to keep giving you samples to use.

I'm actually surprised that a clerk at a retail store wouldn't give you the name/color of the foundation. If she was personally making the stuff, then I could understand. Then again, hair dressers don't want to give out the color/brand dye they use on hair either. Hmmm, I'm a little conflicted.

It's a $10 item that the store doesn't even have it in stock. It seems a bit ridiculous to hold onto that information so that the customer will be forced to buy such an inexpensive product from them at some undisclosed time in the future if they ever do decide to reorder. And what if the customer wanted to research the product a bit further? The inconvenience alone would have me going elsewhere as an FU.

If you bought it at the Bay it wasn't a $10 foundation! And I hate when they are out of stock on something at the Bay Clinique counter, I used to just walk across to Sears and get what I need. If you don't want me to go somewhere else then have it in stock.

You're meant to be getting rid of things not buying more! I don't get why she wouldn't tell you the name and shade, it's highly unlikely they'll go bankrupt if you purchase it somewhere else.

omg I received the worst service at the clinique counter at the bay last month during bonus days! they were way understaffed & kept taking people that had arrived after me instead of helping me get my stuff. I finally lost my patience about it & was probably not pleasant - but I did try to wait my turn. What is it about the bay? Thats not the only department I've received bad service in at that store

I think it is ridiculous that she wouldn't give you the name.
If they don't have it and she didn't offer to order it for you, she should give you the name.
Is it on the sample?
If not that is weird, how are you able to come back and get more. The whole thing is odd.
Also I see no reason to bring her ethnicity into a post like this. What she looks like or any descriptors are just not necessary on this occasion.

I would be annoyed enough that I might not go back. I never end up going at the same times, so chances are, she wouldn't even be working next time or she might already be helping another customer. It also doesn't sound like she left adequate notes for whoever is working next time to be able to find the color which means you have to start over with the next sales person.

Once she figured out they were out of stock, the secrecy should have been thrown out the window. I don't understand why she didn't try to find it somewhere else and have it shipped to you. I don't know what The Bay is, but Nordstrom has done that a few times for me.

Thats not the only department I've received bad service in at that store Yes it always like that when there is Bonus Days, you stand there, there is no queue or anything. If she notices you or you speak up then you get served. I try to go during the week now when it seems there aren't as many people around. Saturdays are brutal. And now that we have lost Sears, it is probably going to be worse.

I had already bought $122 (I added up what I spent and it was $12 more) anyway I wanted this foundation. She looked for it, could only give me samples in a container. I asked her what the colour was and she told me she wrote it down in the book and wouldn't tell me. She already had the sale which is sufficient I would have thought but the secrecy as to the foundation name? She wouldn't write it down. I was the only customer in the department at the time. There was no one else at the counter near me, and she still wouldn't tell me what colour it was. This seems like some sort of game. If I want more samples she said she would just pour me more little containers of samples. I just wanted to buy the foundation. (It's perfect). I can always take the samples I have and go to Sephora and tell them what I know about it and have them match it up, right? I could have gone to the downtown store and bought it there. It's so weird! lainey shhhh. This is something small not huge like 20 hoodies. Small. Easy to store and portable.

First, I get the "hey, I spent all this time and you better not take a sale away from me" thought process. What I want to understand here is this a "made just for you" color? Was it like a pharmacist and she compounded a color match to you? OR is this a name brand counter that has a certain type/color of foundation in a bottle that can anywhere? If so, then I can't see why giving you the name of the color is such a big deal. After the follow-up posts of it not being written down, etc then I would be taking the purchases I had and putting them away for use. I would then be taking my samples elsewhere with the brand name and having another store match it. I would then have what I needed for future purchases. If at the counter where you were then great. If found somewhere else where the item was in stock, then so be it.
It doesn't seem like a $10 purchase if it was a dept store brand of makeup. I'm also not laughing because I just don't have time for games that people play these days. Too many other avenues to get what I need.

That's super bizarre. I went to Macy's and asked to be color matched for an Estee Lauder foundation. The lighting in that particular store is horrendous. The sales lady actually recommended I take home a sample in a small bottle that she poured out of a much larger bottle (like a liter sized bottle). She was trying to write the shade name down for me but couldn't find a pen, so she had me take a photo of the name from the liter. The sample she gave me would easily last me for a week and let me give the foundation a good try before buying. I did end up liking it quite a bit (Double Wear Nude), but haven't made it back to the store to make a purchase.
If you like the foundation but aren't sure about the shade, I would take the sample to another store and purchase it there. I wouldn't return to the same make up counter.

Did they let you order it, so you paid for it and will see the color when they get it in stock? We have been to Sephora and Ulta to buy makeup and we have never had that happen. We have done the 45 min. makeover at Sephora and you spend $50 on makeup. They usually put a lot more than $50 worth on my daughters, and we spend a lot, but they write down everything so we know what to buy next time. We have given the ideas to my mom and mil and they are getting the rest of the makeup for the kids for Christmas. We have also recommended these ladies to friends, so they get a lot of referrals from us. We love Sephora!

No she wouldn't do that for me maryland. I wanted the foundation to be part of my birthday present and I will just take the sample I have to Sephora and explain to them what happened and buy from there. The more I think about this the crazier it sounds. What is the secret? Why can't I buy the foundation at the counter at the Bay downtown if I wanted to. I have no idea what colour it is other than it is perfect for my skin.

I'd be annoyed because I couldn't call and see if it is back in stock before making the trip over. She said she would call, but calling gets forgotten and I want this for my birthday. That's in 2 days. It's not that unreasonable. I can go elsewhere to get it. She doesn't want that.
