I heard Pier One last night isn't going to reopen their stores. The H&M nearest to my house is leaving the mall location, but that might be over rent.
If you had to make a guess, what store is next to close or file bankruptcy?

JC Penney. They’ve been fighting to stay alive for a loooooong time, and I suspect they may not recover from this.

I wonder how many stores Amazon can absorb.

But I guess people feel that way. I hate for any stores having to file because of this situation. Plus I would have nowhere to shop for my craft crap.

I worry about B&N. They were having problems before the shut down. Nordstrom is closing some stores. Tuesday Morning is having problems and will probably close stores too.
And filing for bankruptcy doesn’t always mean the Company will shut down. They could just restructure their debt and stay open.

Penney’s filed bankruptcy. I think the next will be Joann’s or Michael’s Before this, the Michael’s stores in my area seemed to be fairly well run and organized, while our JoAnn stores are all pretty much of a dumpster fire. They are disorganized, understaffed and obviously not well managed. Which really kind of sucks because other than Hobby Lobby (which I hate even more) it’s the only place to buy a variety of fabric. There are quilting shops around but they only sell cotton and flannel.

Bed, Bath & Beyond will surprise me if they don't file for bankruptcy. Not sure how well Talbots is going to do, especially with more people working from home. They have tried a bit harder in the past few years to attract the younger women, however I don't think they are doing that good of a job. DD is 32 and none of her friends will shop there. They view it is as somewhere their moms shop. And this mom shops there less because their quality has declined so much in recent years.
Macy's is a distinct possibility. The stores around here had really gone downhill in recent years. Last year I was in the one in the mall (cut through from the parking lot) and noticed they had really improved the women's clothing section, so maybe they can get it together for the stores they haven't closed.

I agree. Loft seems wayyyyy more able to attract younger mall shopping professional women. I like Talbot's for things like beachy dressy.. That's about it. I'd be a bit sad to see them go. My old faithful denim jacket came from there. Macy's though. That would break my heart. You're right though. They went from being a nice step up from Sears and Penney's, but still more widely affordable than Nordstrom or L&T, to just like like Sears and Penney's (and Kohl's.) Never buy anything there full price. Always use a coupon, code, card, gimmick. It's hard to think of it as being premium, but yet they have that INC brand in there that I love! It's just too expensive of a brand to have to play the coupon code game. I'll go to Kohl's and pay half as much first. At least at Kohl's if you go on the "wrong day" you only pay 15-20% more than you had to. Macy's though.. easily 50% more expensive on the wrong day, and I don't think people will be shopping with the frequency to make Kohl's cash/Macy's Star Money type gimmicks work. At least with Amazon in Kohl's locations, I'm likely to have to go there to return something. I like the Macy's clothes much much better, but it's just not worth it. I'll go to Nordstrom or Nordstrom Rack for quality, and Kohl's for trendy.

Talbots really struggled and shrunk during the recession so I would not be surprised if they don't survive.
The only one around us is in a mall that is down to basically one department store-Sears closed long ago, Macys there is closing and Penneys probably will. It has a huge gym place there. I never go there. There's also an outlet store near us.

Well Penny’s & Sears were the original ship to home brands so it makes some sense. I was always amazed that neither of these 2 companies switched from catalogs to online sales with any great measure of success.

Filing for bankruptcy doesn't necessarily mean a company is going out of business.
I think this could be the final death knell for Sears and the remaining stores could close.
I don't think all Gap stores will close, but I think something big will happen with the company. Old Navy is pretty profitable and was going to spin off to its own independent company, but that was canceled early in the crisis. Athleta is solid. Gap itself is in bad shape.
Victoria's Secret has been in serious trouble for some time; this could be the end or a big change - maybe to online-only?

I’ll be shocked if all the movie theater chains make it through this.
Of the craft stores, I think Joann would be the first to go.
I think stores that rely heavily on browsing/social/entertainment shopping (I’m thinking Ross, Tuesday Morning, TJ Maxx, etc.) are probably in trouble. They don’t have a strong online presence and rely on you coming in to browse and see what’s there for fun as opposed to actually needing something.

I think Gap, Old Navy and Banana Republic will be coming. I think Gap and BR may go away, but ON might survive. I get so many Old Navy emails right now with sales that are practically giving things away, so I think they are desperate. These B&M stores would all be selling tons of summer clothes right now, but only online is. By the time they finally do reopen to in-store sales, they will be more into switching to fall so where are all those spring and summer clothes going to go? Going to be more HUGE discounts and that's going to really hurt. I think this will be true for all clothing stores once things reopen. Where are all the fall clothes going to go when they haven't moved any spring/summer clothes?
All of the smaller stores in malls across the US will be decimated. I just can't see all those little shoe, small clothing and knick-knack stores surviving. Then with lots of the big anchor stores at malls like Nordstroms, Macys, JcPenny closing, malls are really going to hurt even more.

What do you all think about Bath & Body Works?
I thought they'd do better getting hand sanitizer and shipping. One of my orders took almost a month. I placed another and it came fast but I just thought they'd do a better job. And I feel so horrible buying stuff from them without a $10/$30. What's up with that?!

J.Jill filed for bankruptcy, right? I bet others of the women's boutique type stores will as well. I have not heard this, but won't be surprised. Chico's has also popped up as a store that might not make it. What about Brooks Brothers? I haven't shopped there since I retired quite a few years ago, but I know DD and her crew don't. I'm thinking any clothing store/chain that sells business attire and more upscale casual is going to be hit hard. So many people would rather live in their yoga pants and t shirts than dress in regular clothes. Now that more will be working from home, they'll be spending their clothing money on athleisure. We have quite a few local boutiques, both large and small, and while I'm sure some won't survive, I think others will. They are better suited to make quick changes to keep up with the market. The big chains don't have that ability.

I'm going to guess an outlier - Kohl's. I’m not so sure on that one. They had switched to shop online, free pick up in store a while ago and my experiences with that were quite efficient even at Christmastime. Same with the last few times I’ve ordered stuff from there online with ship to home, the orders arrived really fast. A few years ago it was a disaster but now it seems they’ve worked out the bugs. Plus they have their partnership with Amazon for returns and that too has been exceptionally efficient the last time I had an Amazon return. Way easier than finding a box, packing the thing back up, printing a label and then having to take it somewhere to send it back.

My guess is Ann Taylor and Barnes & Noble. Ann Taylor Loft seems ok, but AT always seems to have a color palette for redheads.
BN's business model hasn't adapted. Ours still has a huge DVD department. I also get really tired of being asked if I want to pay to join their club. Amazon has kicked their a$$ on price since the beginning. I've had a gift card from there for months and can't seem to spend it.
Edited to add Talbots. They haven't done anything exciting in years and their market is aging out.
