This is a ridiculous fluffing of the egos of those foolish bishops. They have so much more to worry about than this. But let's get some publicity that will take the public's eye off the never-ending issues with child molestation by priests. Like arielsmom, I'm glad I don't participate in this nonsense anymore.

It's up to the individual whether they themselves have gone against their faith surely. Isn't that what it means when you go to confession?

Are they also going to deny any catholic lawyer for representing anyone in a divorce court too? No of course not, the lawyer isn't getting a divorce. That is no different to President Biden supporting people's choices. Pres Biden himself isn't committing any personal " sin" he's representing the people, all of the people, in America. Personal beliefs should not enter into your decisions when you take up the job of public office be it the President, congressperson or anything else.

Are they refusing Communion to the politicians who back the death penalty?

The church is supposed to be against that too.

It’s such nonsense. Do they decry every Catholic using birth control, or every divorced and remarried Catholic? Or every Catholic who supports abortion rights? Or every Catholic who provides these services?

I stopped receiving Communion long ago and shake my head when I see 95% of parishioners getting up to receive. Hypocrisy, thy name is organized religion, starting with the pedophile priests. Let he who is without sin throw the first stone.

I am a 69-year old non-practicing “cradle Catholic.” Devout parents, 12 years of Catholic school. Still cling to some beliefs. I was hopeful that Pope Francis might be an instrument of change for the church, but recent rulings on homosexual relationships were very disappointing, though not surprising. I hate that the church is seeing fit to castigate President Biden. His strong faith could have been an asset to the future of the Catholic Church, now they are trying to turn it into a fight. I feel sorry for the President, he and Jill are between a rock and a hard spot. I hope enough American Catholics push back against this, and push hard….

So SO many reasons I am no longer a Catholic and this is just one more. A bunch of old men making decisions for women. These old men were probably stunned to have the backlash. They are completely out of step with reality.

From what I remember from my childhood years, the Catholic communion wafer just sticks to the roof of your mouth and hangs there for way too long, impossible to be unrooted even by the mightiest of tongues, inconveniencing you without meeting any basic needs like the dreaded mid-mass hunger. Very symbolic of the Church.

The American bishops going against the Pope's explicit demand is also telling. There are several Catholic Churches at work through the world and they're serving very political agendas such as getting their biblical beliefs written into federal law. And hiding their criminals in plain sight.

I was not raised Catholic, but yeah I don't participate in religion either because of stuff like this.

I am a faithful, practicing Catholic - and a feminist, and a Communion-receiving sinner. I'm imagining a "sin screening" (like Covid screening) taking place at Mass... "Please stop at the confessional in the side aisles for screening before you join the Communion procession."

The American Catholic church has made itself a political tool for the far right. Might be time to rethink those tax exemptions.

How about ALL churches that want to get into the political arena with their support and preaching.
