I'm apparently in the market again.
Ds was driving back to school last night and his car overheated. We went to check it out and hit 3 or 4 deer about two miles from where he was waiting. I'm hoping beyond hope that they're able to repair my car but dh is pretty confident they'll total it out. Two days ago dh pulled the engine from my mini to give it a winter makeover so we are technically down 3 cars in 2 days. That's cool.
Of course, I'm at the worst possible time to be buying a car. I have zero idea where to even start or what I need.
It's just DH and I most of the time. Unless it's a holiday and family is visiting. I use my 3rd row once a month or so I'd say and I carry a decent amount of cargo to work and home from costco a few times a month (it would fit in most cars)
I don't think I need a third row, it's easy enough to take two cars most places as little as I need it. I'm a little worried to not have it though.
Good in weather is always a plus, I'm not ready to go sports car just yet.
Definitely no minivans.
Current car is a kia sorento SXL.
What is the best way to do this?
Overwhelming is a great word for this month.

I have a subaru hatchback impreza. and we have an outback. I can put lots and lots of stuff in my car. it is comfortable for long drives. and I love love the "geezer features"... the side warnings, the back up warnings, the variable cruise control .. If I lived in snow country, I would get an outback. these cars last a long time.

I have a Nissan Pathfinder Platinum and OMG I love it so much! It does have the 3rd row for the rare time we will need it, but 99.9% of the time it is just folded down. So much room for those in the 2nd row. Front row is super roomy too.
I am in No. IL and we have already had a few significant snowfalls. It handles like a champ in the snow. Due to rain all day yesterday then below freezing temps we had a lot of ice over night/this morning. No problems driving to work.

Toyota Highlander, we actually love them so much we own 2. There is not much I don’t love. I have back issues so the 8–way automatic adjustable driver’s seat with 2 memory controls is a huge help. As are the heated and otherwise very comfortable seats. The lumbar support is automatic and adjustable. It’s a smooth, comfortable ride and the engine accelerates quickly and smoothly. The back are is big, which we use all the time even with just the two of us. I will never again go without a rear view camera or push button opening hatch. Controls on the steering wheel keep my eyes on the road. I love the shelf on the dash. I didn’t think I would but it comes in so handy. The console holds quite a bit, I even put my small purse in there. There are built in sunshades for the back 2 seats, we keep them up year round to help with sun exposure and heats. I wish the front row seats had them too, if only for parking. IWe are in South/Central Texas, so I haven’t driven on ice yet. Handles very well in downpours.
DH, @ 6’5” and a big guy with huge shoulders fits very comfortably in either seat and fits in the back seat. He doesn’t like not having bucket seats otherwise he’d say it is very comfortable. Im 5’4” and also fit comfortably. It was hard to find one that fit us both well. And we are both able to easily get in an out. Not too tall for me or short for him. The a/c split between the front two seats and controls for the back a/c in the front are great. What else? Oh, I like the blinking light on my side mirrors and light plus audible alarm for the back camera when someone is in my blind spot or I’m getting too close to a person or vehicle. Always ranked at the top or near it for reliability for mid-sized SUVs.
I don’t like the leather dashboard, bad idea in the Texas sun. And my arms rested more comfortably in the older model Highlander than they do the newer model. I don’t remember if DH or I have 3rd row seats. One of us does and it was easy to use. I just don’t remember which one.

I have a 2019 Toyota Highlander and love it! I had a 2004 Honda Pilot that I loved until I bought the Highlander in January. It rides like a sedan but has lots of room for our *stuff*. dewryce said it all! When DS (6'2") sat behind me in the Pilot, I practically had my knees in my mouth. With the Highlander, I don't even have to adjust my seat there is SO much room in the second row. DH says it is truly amazing how much room there is!

I have a VW Tiguan - until tomorrow! It’s been the best car I’ve ever had. It’s spacious (certainly by UK standards), comfortable and well-equipped. But it’s manual transmission, and because my DD is disabled, she will only be able to drive an automatic. She sits her driving test next month, so we’re getting a new car tomorrow. It’s the Seat Ateca, which is almost identical to the Tiguan, but a lower insurance group, so DD will be covered to drive it. Do Seat sell cars in the US? I’m trying to remember if I’ve ever seen any there...

Do any of you regret going from a SUV to a sedan?

Nissan Altima - Base Model.
I lease my cars and I'm on my 5th Altima.
I love it because even with the base model, I feel like I'm driving a luxury car. You can get all the bells and whistles, but even th base has power everything.

We have a Ford Flex - it's roomy (seat 6 and the middle row seats are comfortable for both DS 6'3" and BIL 6'4" - both big guys.) and comfortable. I don't drive but DH says it drives well.
We also have a Cooper Mini - it's fun and cute (and surprisingly spacious for a small car) and has good gas mileage but it's better as an around town car than a road trip car

I have an Infiniti QX50. It’s the smaller mid-sized SUV and more car-like. I like the luxury and safety/convenience features and the backseat folds down to haul what I need. DH wanted another sedan but I put the kibosh on that since it limits what we can transport. One year he bought a large flat screen tv and it didn’t fit in our car. I had to drive home and get our SUV. I remind him of that when he talks about having two sedans. If cost is a factor the Nissan Rogue is the equivalent in size.

Do any of you regret going from a SUV to a sedan? I've only ever had sedans, but I would imagine anyone going from an SUV to a sedan would find it hard to get used to not being able to see over other cars on the road, and when backing out of parking spaces etc. If you still want the height but not the third row, look at a smaller 5 seater SUV.

So glad you guys are okay. We rented a Jeep Compass in the summer and the cargo room in the back was really small. My friend owns a Jeep Grand Cherokee and barely has room for two sets of golf clubs in the cargo area. I would not recommend a Jeep for the amount of product you need to haul around. We just bought a Dodge Journey. Lots of cargo room in the back and still a decent amount of leg room in the back seat. I had 5 of us in the Journey the other day and it did not feel crowded. I also really, really like the new Chevrolet Blazer. I just did not like the price tag. But you should go check them out, it is a really awesome vehicle.

I would buy a subscription online to consumers report and look at their ratings. that will help in selection process.

Do any of you regret going from a SUV to a sedan? I haven't gone from an SUV to a sedan but, DH drives a Mercedes which is a nice car but I hate driving or riding in it for any length of time. The seats in an SUV are more like a chair ~ does that make sense? ~ which is great for my back. Driving in a sedan, my legs are more straight out which is terrible on my back. JMHO ~ but you asked.

I have a BMW X5 and I love it. I have the optional third row. It’s really only ok for people 5’3’’ and shorter, and that only if the person is able to climb back there. For me and the kids it works so well.
I love how easy it is to drive even with the size. I like the cargo space. I love the birds eye view camera (this was a must for me). I like the luxury - the dash, lights, extra large sunroof, heads up display. Dh uses the parking assist - it scares me. But it’s very cool when he uses it. If I wanted to downsize I’d go to the BMW X3.

I'm not ready to go sports car just yet. So... you don’t want to hear about my Corvette? For real, if I was in the market, I would definitely test drive a Range Rover. And my mom just bought an Audi Q8, and it’s really nice. I do like driving the Jeep Wrangler we have for the kids, but it’s sort of a pain to get into/out of the back seat, and I hate the looks of the 4-door ones. If I was an empty nester, though, a newer one would also be high on my list. It’s fun to drive, maneuverable, and has the benefit of being a 4WD that’s good in the snow, but can also be a great summer car. (We have a soft top on ours that flips open from the front, which is super handy! It’s like a sunroof!)

I was going to say I loved my car because it's a convertible but that doesn't help your situation. Had I not gotten the Mustang, I would have gotten an Outback. But I had a bad day so I bought a convertible instead.

i have a 2006 nissan altima. my mom gifted it to me last february when she got a new SUV. it has ac. i LOVE ac. my old car was a 2003 honda accord, black with black leather interior. and a sunroof. that sunroof didn't do me a LICK of good stuck in bumper to bumper traffic in the sweltering summer. it just made me hotter. i used to bring wet wash clothes to put across the back of my neck to cool me down when i knew i would be stuck in traffic. so that's probably not what you are looking for - doubt you are gonna go out and get a 2006 nissan altima. but damn i love that car and promised myself i would NEVER EVER take ac for granted.

Subaru Forester. AWD, sporty, fun, lots of cargo space. Excellent ratings. If you want the 3rd row, Subaru came out with one this year. Ascent, maybe? It starts with an A.

I’m looking at the Subaru Crosstrek - what about that? I have a Subaru Crosstrek and love it. Mine is a 2015 and I have had no issues with it. Gets good gas mileage. Cruise control adjusts to speed of car ahead of me. Good amount of storage space and leg room. I got the roof rack and the remote ignition as extras and most of the rest was included standard. I just got my first new set of tires at 70k miles.

This is exactly why I'm so lost right now. I drove a couple of corvettes a few weeks ago, you know because I had a SUV almost paid off that I was going to drive forever. I currently have a mini cooper convertible and the kia and my husband has a Hyundai veloster. I bought an explorer sport trac a few months ago but it's in VA and I wasnt planning on picking up until spring and itll be more of a dog/work truck. I was considering selling the mini, giving the veloster to a kid, giving DH the suv and buying something fun but now I'm going to have to go practical :/ Ugh. I feel like sporty, trucky, and practical will be well balanced for the 2 of us I'm not ready to go sports car just yet. So... you don’t want to hear about my Corvette? For real, if I was in the market, I would definitely test drive a Range Rover. And my mom just bought an Audi Q8, and it’s really nice.
