what clothes do you hang up and what clothes do you fold?
I fell like I should hang up more than I do so clothes are not so wrinkled, but I fell that if I hang knit shirts up they will stretch out.
So how do you decide what to hang up and what to fold?
Thanks, Becky

Basic tshirts, knit tanks, shorts, some sweaters, sweatshirts, yoga pants, pj's all get folded. All pants (jeans or otherwise), skirts, nice knit shirts, blouses, jackets, dresses, etc get hung up.

I've not noticed my knit shirts stretching out when hung. Or at least by the time they are looking stretched they are also looking faded and otherwise worn. I hang all outerwear and fold underwear.

I fold jeans, shorts, under clothes, swim suits. I will also fold most sweaters. I hang a lot because I have a large closet.

Gad,you guys hang a lot! You must have huge closets! I hang dress pants, work clothes, jackets, blouses. I fold tshirts, jeans, sweats. I've probably got a bit more closet space since it is in the master bedroom and is supposed to be for two but it is just me. The other factor though is my wardrobe stays really pared down. My work wardrobe is 6 skirts and 6 blouse/shirts. Week end ward robe is 3 skirts and 3 blouses ~ two sets appropriate to wear shopping and one set for grubby get paint on me type of work. I've got two pairs of sweats. All my jackets are in the coat closet or hanging on a coat rack in my home office. When I buy a new outfit (or get one for a gift) one of the current outfits goes out. I'm not a clothes keeper. I have the bare essentials for what I need and that is it.

So I don't need to worry about knit polo shirts getting the weird stretch marks on the shoulders? That is good to know.
I have the WORST closet ever. It is longer not wide, so the rod goes from the front to back, not side to side. I should check and see if there is a way to change where the door is, because my closet seriously sucks.
DH and I don't change because I sleep on that side of the bed and I like my clothes on my side.

I wear polo's for work, and I hang them all. They are less wrinkled that way. I too use those velvet snuggle hangers.

Everything gets folded except my dresses. My husband uses up most of our closet space so that works better for us.

Answer: depends on the configuration of my closet space.
When I was growing up, my mother hung everything except underwear, socks, and towels. There was just no space for anything else to be folded. This was also true for my first couple of apartments.
Now, I hang all shirts, but pants are folded. The last two places I've lived have had california closet-type setups. Right now, I have two short bars over each other (so, enough space for shirts but not pants) and six very spacious shelves. I actually like the pants folded better anyhow; they never stayed particularly well in pants hangers.

Lounging clothes, workout clothes, underwear, socks, and jeans all get folded and put in my dressers. Sweaters and sweatshirts are folded and put on shelves in the closet. Everything else is hung up.

I hang up my work blouses and slacks. I also hang up my jeans. I fold my t-shirts, casual shirts, shorts, and pjs. I don't own any sweaters (live in the south, don't really wear them) but if I had them, I would probably hang them up. I have a couple of sweatshirts (sports team related) and I hang them up because they are too bulky to fold and put away.

My wardrobe is all casual. I hang up shirts and fold pants. I don't bother to fold undies or tanks (my tank tops are all the skinny ribbed type and smooth right out when I put them on). I don't fold socks but then I almost never wear socks.

I fold everything I actually took the rod out of my closet years ago and put in all shelves and drawers.

I decide based on available space. So I'm probably not much help. For myself, I hang everything except for underwear, pajamas/lounging clothes, & bathing suits. For my boys, I hang only actual suits/dress outfits, and every other thing goes into their drawers, even their khakis & button-downs and polos, which means I do far more ironing for them than for me. We use their closet space for toys & books instead. (I hang their actual dress clothes, which are few, in my closet.)

I hang up almost everything. I don't hang up my workout clothes or my pajamas and I don't hang up my summer shorts but everything else is pretty much hung up. Even my sweaters.

Does it count as hanging if clothes are on the treadmill? I kid, the treadmill is in the basement. I hang blouses, dresses, jackets, pants, jeans, skirts. I fold underwear, socks, pjs, swimsuits, t-shirts and shorts.

We have his and hers walk in closets. We hang everything but jeans and shorts. I even hang my tank tops for layering.
The boys share a large walk through closet and dd has a fairly large closet, though not walk in. The kids' do the same.

There are two closets in our master bedroom and mine has both a long rod and lots of shelves on both sides. I hang all dresses, skirts, most blouses, and most pants. I fold sweaters, t-shirts, knits, workout clothes and all intimate wear (pjs, undies, bras, etc). Some folded stuff (sweaters and bulky stuff like sweatshirts & hoodies) go on the shelves in the closet. Everything else goes in a dresser. I think though that knowing what others do is only useful to the extent that you have the same storage options available that they do. Sometimes you have to make decisions based on what you storage you have. At this time, I have the luxury of deciding based on what I think is best for each type of clothing. But I have lived in houses where the closet was so small that I had to choose based on that limitation. So... assuming you have the options to hang or fold any type of clothing --- my general recommendation is to hang anything that doesn't stretch and to fold anything that does.

I have a big closet. So I have enough room to hang everything. Plus I'm retired so if anything needs special attention, I have time for it. Pants folded on pants hangers, all tops on hangers. I don't wear sweaters but all knit shirts hung on huggable hangers. Only undies and socks and PJs folded in drawers.

Under things, sleepwear, workout clothes and a few rarely worn sweaters are in drawers and everything else is hung up.
We do have a walk-in closet, but it is not huge. After multiple moves a few years ago I really purged my clothes, getting rid of everything I didn't wear regularly. It helps that living in a mild climate means I don't have a winter/summer wardrobe. The biggest pain is cocktail style or formal dresses that I only need 2-3 times a year.
