I am about to start my 3rd steroid pack since the beginning of November. First my face was peeling and looked burned and my DR thought it was a reaction to some Peter Thomas Roth stuff I had used on my face. Got that cleaned and healed and then my eye lids started peeling two weeks ago. Took all the medicine and it looked like it was healed. Now my eye lids are peeling yet again, and my Dr is wanting me to start a third Prednisone pack for 10 days.
The Dr isn't really sure now whats causing this to happen. At first he though I was allergic to something but now its happening for no reason. The only thing *I* can contribute to it is all three times its happened has been in a very high-stress time for me. My eye lids are raw. I have thrown out all makeup and got new brushes so I dont think its makeup related or that I am cross contaminating anything. I have been using throw away makeup removers pads.
So, would you continue to just take more steroids? The DR just called me in another round without seeing me. I have a Dermatologist appointment for mid Feb as that was the earliest he could get me in.
So far, his treatment plan has been:
3 - rounds of steroids by mouth 1 shot of steroids tube of ointment to use - been using daily and does nothing when I dont use it in combo of the steroids.
When I went in originally, he did test a scraping of it and said it wasn't staph. I do have hypothyroidism and my inflammation markers were 3x the level they should have been.
So, what would you do?

Hmm. That is a lot of steroids considering you're still having the same problem.
I'd be tempted to skip the oral steroids, use the ointment. Could you try seeing an opthalmologist since it's your eyelids? They usually can get you in quickly.

I should have added that in the OP. I can call the Ophthalmologist - I figured since it wasn't my actual eye ball they wouldn't treat it. But leet me call.

Well so much for the ointment then! Could it be a yeast infection? Have you been using vitamin C (retinol) on your face?

Are you still using makeup on your eyes at all? If so, stop!
You can develop allergies at any point in life to something that you never had an issue with before.
If you go a month without makeup and the problem is still there, you’ll know it isn’t the make up.
eta: tea tree oil! I hope that it was diluted! That would burn the heck out of my face.

Nope, not wearing any eye makeup and barely wearing any other makeup. Ive had no makeup on since last Tuesday. The peeling started again today. I have quit everything skin care related except for washing my face with a makeup wipe and then Cereve moisturizer and Vit C (Dr approved this). And oh yes! The tea tree oil is diluted!

Phew!
Then I’m guessing it is thyroid connected. My Graves’ disease was first diagnosed when I went in with eye issues - mine were puffy and peeling too. And when my immune system goes out of whack with thyroid antibodies, my eyes puff up.
Do you have an endocrinologist? If so, I’d schedule an appointment.

Vit C can make your skin peel; does it to me. I thought I had something weird going on, then realized what it was.

Stop with the Tea Tree oil - diluted or not. It can irritate your skin. I would even consider stopping the Vitamin C. Both are unnecessary products until you figure out what is happening.
I know the Vitamin C is "doctor approved" but considering you are on your third steroid pack I'm not sure I would have 100% faith in what s/he is saying since things are not clearing up.
As for the dermatologist not getting you in until February - I would ask my doctor to call the dermatologist to see if you could get in sooner.

Will also call tomorrow about getting moved up in the line.

I’m not sure, this sounds horrendous.
I would probably switch to a dermatologist, because they specialize in skin. And I would stop wearing eye makeup altogether.

Would it still cause peeling on my eye lids? It shouldn't but it's easy to get some in places you don't intend to; I remember doing that. Specifically on my eyelids. Must have crept there from putting the retinol on my crow's feet, lol!

My husband is a derm PA. I read him your post and he said if he saw you in clinic he’d advise fragrance free dove soap, free and clear brand shampoo, and a fragrance free moisturizer. NOTHING ELSE. No hair dye, no hairspray, no perfume, no makeup of any kind, no nail polish, no topicals including vitamin c or tea tree oil. Must be symptom free for 3 weeks and then can add one product back in every 3 weeks. Okay to do the steroids (cream and oral) but must be symptom free for 3 weeks after finishing them before adding any products back in. Good luck.

No -the only symptom on that list is the flaking eyelid. Well, flaking and it burns where the skin is raw. Defiantly not crusting, no swelling or anything else. The Dr mentioned it could be related to an auto-immune issue but he hadn't gone into what that would mean. He just keeps throwing steroids at it. And yes, the steroids will work but as soon as I stop them, it comes back.

Be careful using cortisone cream on your face. It can lead to a skin condition called perioral dermatitis which is very difficult to clear up.
Hope things clear up soon! I agree you need to take a complete break from facial products for the time being.

But also ask how it works. I did that once for my primary, and when an earlier appointment came open, they just moved my appointment time without calling me to ask if the new time would work. I currently have an appointment in a different department where I couldn't get in until March, so I'm on that cancellation list now, but they said that when they get a cancellation, they start calling the list. The first one they get through to, or the first one to call back to confirm, gets the spot. That makes more sense to me.

Stop everything including your detergent, shampoo, hair products, and and any other stuff you use. Use plain water to rinse off your face. If you have to use a cloth to clean your face, then make sure you rinse it out several times to get any detergent residue out of it. You will want to do this if possible before seeing the dermatologist or endocrinologist. They will want to rule out all these things before moving on to looking into other causes. So get a jump start on it and keep a record of all you have done to show you mean business.

FWIW, when I started going to the thyroid eye disease clinic at U of Michigan, I wasn’t allowed to wear any make-up on my face (or anything else, including moisturizer) and could only wash my face with Johnson’s Baby Shampoo.
It couldn’t hurt to follow similar guidelines until you see a dermatologist and/or endocrinologist.
The tissue around your eyes has a same neuroreceptor as your thyroid tissue. If your immune system is attacking your thyroid, it often attacks the tissue around your eyes, thinking it is also thyroid tissue/the enemy. A weird quirky fact that only people with thyroid issues due to autoimmune diseases need to know about.

Since it’s only the lids now, I would not do more steroids. Instead, google lid scrubs and do those 2 times a day either Johnson & Johnson baby shampoo.

The raised inflammation factor, and the fact that is happened during stress sounds autoimmune to me. I read once that the good bacteria in our gut drops almost 50% during stress. Since they are starting to believe an imbalance of bacteria can cause autoimmune disease, there could be a correlation here during stress which causes a flare.
Or maybe it’s diet. Do you tend to alter your diet at all during stress? Like extra sugar or too much ice cream, etc.

After developing an allergy to toothpaste recently I realized the products we use that seem simple really do contain quite a few ingredients that could cause problems.

What shampoo/conditioner/gel/hairspray? Whatever is on your hair is on your pillow and therefore in contact with your face/eyes. Just something else to consider.
