When do you cave and turn on your heat? It has been dropping to 3 or 4 celcius in the evenings here, and hour daily highs are only predicted to be around 10 or 11 degrees. (don't ask me why, but our thermostat is in fahrenheit even though we follow the metric system around here - has been since we built the house, have no idea how to change it) So our thermostat has read about 66 in the mornings. Kids are starting to complain a wee bit. But I'm holding out. I almost caved this morning, and just turned the fireplace on for a bit instead. When do you cave? When you can see your breath in the morning?

My heat is set to come on when the indoor temp dips below 65 (18-19 celsius) But for now the day time highs are still in the upper 70 to mid 80s. I've turned the a/c off so the house warms up good during the day.

Our heat is set to come on if the inside temperature drops below 64.

I'm not even in a cold weather area and I'm going through to clean the vents and turn on the heat today. It's supposed to be in the 50s all week and that's too cold for this old girl.

When I am cold. I have turned it on 2 or 3 mornings so far, and then once the house warms up, I have turned it off again. When the sun shines, it shines directly on the front of our house for most of the day, so as long as it's sunny, we aren't cold.

We turn it on when we are cold, no matter what the date. We've had a number of nights where the temperature has dipped into the 30s and 40s. It's been running when it needs to for a few weeks already.

Our heat has been on for quite a while already. We've had days with a high in the 30's and 40's. That's too cold to not have the heat on. Doesn't matter what the date is - if it's cold the heat goes on.

Two nights ago we had on the air conditioning. Last night the heat was on. There was a thick layer of frost this morning at 6:30. I used to wait until November, not anymore.

We heat our house mostly with wood pellet stoves. So technically we haven't turned on our heat yet (we have forced hot water with an oil furnace)... But we have used the stove a couple of times. They were on last night as we were supposed to get to freezing.

We turned ours on a few weeks ago. It is set to 66 during the day and 62 at night so it doesn't run all the time, but is there when we need it. I hate being cold in my house so I don't wait until a certain date.

I understand the mind set of the way olden days on waiting to use heat since it was all firewood. They knew the early fall wasn't as cold as it was going to get and wanted to make sure the wood pile would last the worst of the winter weather. But with modern furnaces I don't see a reason to be uncomfortable in my home. So I don't worry about the month. Only what temps make me comfortable.

I have a gas fireplace so right now it's enough for us. As long as the daytime temps stay in the mid to high 60s I won't turn the heat on. I'm hoping to get another week or two before I have to turn on the heat.

I leave the heating on auto and set to operate when the indoor temp drops below 19 celsius. In the past week it has come on once in the late evening, and a couple of times early morning....so the temp' seems to be dropping now in my part of England - later than usual this year!

As long as I can possibly stand it. Usually the days warm up enough to take the chill off. This week we're expecting low 60's and rain all week. With the cold nights, this might be the week I need to turn it on Of course the kids have been complaining for weeks, lol.

You guys are tougher than I am. Ours is set a 69. Us too! We don't dip below 70. I like it to be about 74 in the house! I like to wear tank tops and yoga pants. I will go without other things in order to be comfy in my home. I am home a lot and I hate bundling up and I'm always cold so I keep the heat on.

What's funny is most people complain about high electric bills in summer due to air conditioning. It's the opposite at our house. Our winter electric bill is much higher than our summer. I keep the air on 76 or 78 degrees in summer and we have a lot if days that it is 100 degrees here. I'm fine with 78 and a fan.

We talked about turning the furnace on last night. Instead we got out an extra blanket that we both ended up throwing off the bed in the middle of the night. We'll probably turn it on low just to cut the chill in the next couple days but won't bring it on full for another few weeks.

I have set it to 60f. I caved last week when it dropped to 45. However, temps rebounded to humid and in the 70s for a few days but today I woke up to 29f This morning I think Fall is firmly in the house! Unless we are having visitors we usually keep it around 65.

I turned our heat on at the beginning of September after our huge snow storm. Then off, then on.... Today it's going to be 22, so it's off again.

It's 15 degrees in my house this morning and 1 degree outside. I am happy with a sweater but I suspect DH will be putting the heat on today when he gets home or at least the fireplace (it's gas). I don't wait for a specific month to turn the heat on, I just enjoy the cold for as long as DH can stand it.

Here in MI, the really nice fall days don't last long. When the overnight lows are consistently in the 40's or lower, I have the heat set to come on at 65F. During the day, it stays at 68. My house retains heat pretty well so it's not kicking on a lot right now. That'll change when November hits.

You guys are tougher than I am. Ours is set a 69. I'm with you! We usually have it set to 70 through the winter. DH has been known to bump it to 72 on occasion! I'm not really waiting for any specific date - more of a cost saving measure. Last winter was pretty cold here, so our gas bill jumped up $20/month. So I'd like to try and get it a little lower.

We have been using the wood fireplace in the lowest level of the house for a couple of weeks already, which warms the rest of the house a little bit. Yesterday morning I had my husband turn on the gas fireplace in the great area (open kitchen/dining/living room) because it was chilly in the morning. Yesterday it was about 50* outside so he fired up the huge outside wood heater thingy. It made it really warm in here, so we just kept it turned way down. This is our first winter here, so we are trying to gauge things.

I had on my heat last night and this morning. It wasn't freezing (40's) but I'm a punk and I hate falling asleep/waking up to a cold bedroom.
ETA: we live in an apartment so no thermostat, we can just turn the heat on and off.

Mine has been on for quite awhile. Like volt I see no reason to be uncomfortable in my own home. Mine is set to 71 during the day and 67 at night.

We caved weeks ago ... you probably saw my photo of that freak September snow storm here in Calgary ... if it is colder than 21 degrees in the house in the morning, I turn on the furnace ... that's what it's for

Ours has been on/off for probably a month. It's in the 20s, and 30sF in the AMs. I like to turn it on in the mornings to get the chill out as I am getting ready. Then I turn it on when I get home. Turn it way down during the day. We have only had the wood furnace on a few times, because it just gets too warm with that.
