I vacillate between being horrified at seeing prices over $30 for a good travel mug and willing to pay over a hundred to get exactly what I want since I'm so picky!
I need a mug that holds 16 oz or more I like it to keep my drink hot but not liquid lava for five hours so I can't drink it until lunchtime. I want to pour from my Mr. Coffee in the morning and enjoy it over the next 15-45 minutes and have it stay hot or warm I don't need totally leakproof but it would be nice it wouldn't spill completely if knocked over I have an old car with regular cup holders I want high quality, if there's a decoration I don't want it to rub off in a month and look, like the reviewer of a Pioneer Woman mug mentioned, "mangy" I want to be able to use it for herbal tea on occasion and not retain coffee odors And as if that's not enough, compatibility with a loose leaf tea strainer would be ideal, a basket style perhaps? Or one of those balls on a chain and
ducks
dishwasher safe!

You'd be hard pressed to find a stainless steel cup that doesn't retain some coffee odor unless you scrub it thoroughly with Barkeepers Friend often.
We like the Contigo travel cups

I have this ozark trail tumbler with this lid. I use the tabs mentioned above to clean it every once in a while but it really doesn't need it that often. When I use it for hot liquids, I put two icecubes in and pour the hot liquid over to cool it down a tiny bit, because it will get very very hot. If I'm at work and want to make tea in it, I'll make the tea leaving a bit of room at the top, when it's done brewing I'll put some cold water in to cool it down. You may not need to do this, I actually don't really like hot drinks so I'm probably going to extremes, but I prefer my 'hot' drinks more like lukewarm.

I am another one who uses the Contigo travel mugs. They both came from Target ($10-$20). Link here. I have 2 of them that I switch back and forth for coffee. I use a completely separate travel mug for tea - it's an old-style heavy-duty Starbucks mug that may no longer be available (it's probably at least 12 years old, LOL). All are stainless steel, leakproof, and easy to wash (but not dishwasher safe). They all keep liquids hot for at least 4-6 hours or more (the tea mug lasts longest ~ 6-8 hours). I don't like travel mugs that have handles because the handles don't always fit easily into a cup holder, or into the outer "water bottle" pocket of by commuter backpack.

I like the contigo travel mugs too, but I would suggest getting 2, one for coffee, one for tea, thet definitely retain scents.
The stainless ones are completely dishwasher safe. I put the colored ones in the dishwasher too, but they have peeled some. They do better on the top rack.
I also like that you can drink and lock the seal with one hand.

what about the Yeti 22 oz Rambler cup? This my suggestion as well. I know it's pricey, but worth it. Pretty colors too.

I am on the search for the perfect 20 oz travel mug. I used to swear by the Contigo Byron but I have had non stop issues with the rubber ring coming loose after one to two months of use. I found after reading reviews on Contigo’s site that I am not alone. I can’t review any of their other models but STAY AWAY from the Byron until they fix the issue with the rubber seal (unless you like coffee/tea leaking out the lid .

The Contigo ones are great for keeping your drinks hot (or cold) and are truly leakproof. However, I find them insanely hard to drink from. Very little liquid comes out and you have to squeeze the button to drink. But it’s still the best I’ve found so far. I’m interested in the MIIR or Kinto travel mugs on Amazon.

My son got me a Keurig Mini for Christmas, so I had to find travel mugs to fit it. I got this one www.amazon.com/Rubbermaid-Proof-Thermal-Bottle-Lagoon/dp/B077G4BXX1 in a 10 oz size, but it comes in 16 oz. What sold me is that it's inexpensive and dishwasher safe. Let your coffee cool a bit before you pour it in these mugs as they do keep it hot a long time.

I ran into a friend at an event holding the 20 Oz Yeti rambler with magslider lid so I was able to test it in my car and I think it’s the winner! They offer 20% off to veterans and first responders so DH is going to order me one. Thanks, Peas!

I've had about 3 different travel mugs (I call them water bottles) and I've had a Yeti. I lost my Yeti 26 oz bottle over at my parents house and I loved it so much I replaced it with another Yeti. Others just don't compare-it is that superior. I drive a 1999 Honda Civic LX-a car that is 21 years old, and my Yeti fits into the cup holders. I use mine to hold ice water when I go in my car anywhere and it works amazingly well. It keeps cold liquids cold, and hot liquids hot. Yeti makes water bottles and travel mugs in different sizes and configurations and also you can buy different tops or replacement pieces if you ever need them.

I want to pour from my Mr. Coffee in the morning and enjoy it over the next 15-45 minutes and have it stay hot or warm The mugs mentioned are double walled super insulated meant to keep things HOT for a long time. I don't like stuff liquid lava either. I keep the lid off until I'm ready to leave. You need an old plastic to go mug they didn't hold the heat for as long. Or a non popular brand name not known for 8 hours of great insulation.

I very much like the simple modern voyager travel mugs. 12, 16, 20, 24 ounces. I actually use them for iced coffee to keep the ice from melting too quickly. Sometimes, there will still be ice in them the next morning. However, I think that it will cool off faster if you leave the flip part of the lid open.

I love my contigo. It’s tea only. I don’t drink coffee. I refuse to use any of the other travel mugs we have because they all make my tea taste like coffee. I’d recommend 2 different cups. One for coffee and one for tea,

Another vote for Contigo. My plain steel one has a leak-proof lid (which you can buy separately if you drop and break them - guess how I know ) and all parts are dishwasher safe. If you get a coloured one it is still dishwasher safe but the colour will end up coming off revealing the plain steel underneath. At 7am I pour boiling water onto my tea bag up to the inner line, then top it up with cold, put the lid on and vent it a few times before sealing. It stays the perfect drinkable temperature until I need it sometimes not till 9:30am. I haven't tried it longer.

Here is my take: The best mug I have that does not spill - ever - is the Contigo Autoseal. It keeps the beverage hot (or cold) for a long time. It will have that lava hot in the beginning, but that is the trade off for keeping it hot longer. I tend to click the auto-seal button a few times to let the steam out and that helps cool it a bit. This is my 'truck driving' mug. It can take a bump and fly out of my cupholder and rocket across my cab and not spill a drop. Mine is colored, and it has some scratches but I have had it for years. I had two. I think one of my kids made off with one of them. The one they took had a dent in it. I made the dent by squeezing the cup that hard when I was riding in the cab of the combine and picked up a deer in the header. I wash in the dishwasher. You can flip the inner part of the lid apart - and when you wash, this helps clean it better. Contigo 16 ounce AutosealI send a ton of cups out to the field and most of them return, but not all. So I am not going to spend a ton on these cups. So I get the Ozark Trail ones from Walmart. They do keep the drinks hot. They are 20 ounce though. These do keep the drink hot for a very long time. They also keep ice drinks cold a long time too - no flavor transfer. I wash in the dishwasher, even though you are not supposed to. But I replace the regular lid with one that has a magnetic slider that makes a better seal. It isn't going to hold like the Contigo seal, but it does fine if you are not bouncing through a corn field! I order the lids on Amazon and they fit any 20 ounce tumbler, even the YETI, if you are boujee Magnetic slide tumbler lids.

I’m a Yeti girl, I have 3. It seriously keeps things hot for hours with the lid slid closed but if it’s open I find it cool enough after 15 minutes but still warm for at least 2-3 hours.

We had a tea mug that was perfect. It had two layers to the lid. One for the tea bag and one that sealed the mug completely. Can’t find a replacement like it anywhere.
I have a mug for coffee that won’t hold a thing if it is knocked over in the car, as I discovered yesterday. A 20 oz Tervis is the tea travel mug. It is used for only tea, as the coffee mug is solely used for coffee. The Tervis tea mug is ridiculously stained. The Tervis keeps the tea too hot for about 2 to 3 hours.

I really don’t like drinking coffee out of stainless steel.
You don’t need to keep it hot very long so it seems like just a regular travel mug from like Starbucks would work best. With the lid it keeps coffee hot for at least an hour. I feel those stainless steel ones are for when you need it to stay hot or cold for hours and hours.

I had one and I would spill soda all over myself! I cannot get the hang of drinking out of a reusable bottle. I gave up on them and pretty much only use straws. Or I get a fountain drink from sheetz and wash and reuse with my lid and straw as much as I can. I will look at the recommendations and maybe find something that will work.
