And only the OP will get flack for it. The 27 other peas who agreed with her are off the hook. 3 weeks ago I had no clue how serious this was. I didn’t agree with her op but I was of the mindset that the media was blowing it out of proportion. I was stupid, I was uninformed. I wasn't one who agreed with the OP (or even saw the OP until today), but 3 weeks ago I was flying across the country to Arizona for a work event. Besides a little extra hand sanitizer, nothing was different. It was just being talked about. Heck, the next weekend I was at an event for set-up (canceled during set-up). That was just 10 days ago. Thankfully we've learned a lot since then, but I don't think people agreeing with the OP on March 3rd made them completely irresponsible. I can't speak for the Walter Reed biologist...

I can't speak for the Walter Reed biologist... yeah we got back from San Diego on February 27, by the 3rd we were finally coming out of jet lag. It was still a joke at the time or maybe we just weren’t paying attention. But the people I said were over reacting look like fucking geniuses now!

I actually feel like this is similar to a lot of people who voted for Trump, and now regret that decision. The information about him was out there but if you just relied on word of mouth and certain news sources you really had no grasp of how bad it/he was. But then, you know, he became president and shit hit the fan so you paid more attention and did some digging on your own, face palmed and thought “what was I thinking?” Now you’re on the side of good, and doing what needs to be done

(((hugs))) to everyone. I've had plenty of times in my life when I underestimated the extent of a problem or in hindsight regretted something that I said or did...so I can give a lot of grace to people who misunderstood or underestimated this pandemic (but OP's friend was irresponsible in what she spouted to OP). Looking forward to the days when we can all hug our friends and loved ones again. Personally, I don’t think that the microbiologist friend actually said much of anything reported in the OP. I know Walter Reed and the caliber of personnel there. It is right across the street - literally - from NIH. Chances are, if there is a friend who works in Infectious Diseases at Walter Reed, she would have had some professional contact with Dr. Fauci - be it at a conference or work training seminar. There is quite a bit of exchange between the two institutions. She wouldn’t have said much of anything quoted in the OP, if she exists and actually talked with the OP on the topic. It would be nice if peppermintpatty came back and just apologized and said that it wasn’t her finest moment, but she posted here on another thread today, so apparently is standing by her words on this thread.

There are still plenty who think it's an overreaction. We've got the POTUS standing in a briefing today saying that we might not need to continue all this social distancing, and millions of his devoted fans hanging on every word. We've got Rand Paul waltzing around the Senate after he'd been exposed like it was no big deal, and doubling down on his decision to do so even after he tested positive. We've got the governor of Florida letting everyone have their spring break before he would consider shutting anything down, and the governor of Texas criticizing Trump on one hand, but on the other hand refusing to issue a statewide shutdown. No surprise if the OP is standing by her words. Depending on who you listen to, this is either a major deal or no big deal. The death of facts in this country is going to cause a lot of actual death.

I'm glad she came back after this pile on. If every pea who ever said something another pea didn't like or agree with, the board would just be an endless stream of apologies. Maybe she is just letting it drop. Maybe everyone should just let it drop. Otherwise, maybe we should be fair to the OP and track down every post by every person who downplayed this or said we should be more worried about the flu and require them to apologize too.

A friend of mine is a Microbiologist who works at Walter Reed in the Infectious Diseases department. Her department tracks infectious diseases around the world. She works with things like Anthrax, Ebola, etc. so I totally believe what she says. I asked her yesterday what her take is on this.
She said that she is so tired of the media blowing this all out of proportion. Everyone in her department says the EXACT same thing, It's a virus. It's a cold or flu like symptoms. The only new thing is that we haven't seen it before and just like every strain of flu that comes out each year, it's new. There isn't anything different other than the media is predicting a doomsday event. No kids have died from it nor have they found any kids with it. Those who have died had weakened immune systems. Healthy individuals should be fine.
I asked her about them calling it a pandemic. She said it absolutely is NOT a pandemic. The reason that China and some other countries are going into lockdown is that if Northern India gets it, then there will be a problem because they lack any type of adequate healthcare or measures to control it.
People die from the flu every year, this is absolutely no different.
She said the best thing to do is get your flu shot and wash your hands! We do not need to make a run on the grocery stores!
Curious if you and your friend still believe this to be the case?

To me, this is different. She posted a lot of misinformation and attributed it to someone who should be an authority, misinformation that could lead to someone being exposed to the virus, passing it along, getting sick themselves or worse. Is she responsible for others’ behaviors? Of course not. But she can certainly influence them, and right now it’s dangerous to let the OP stand as written.
