I'm relieved to find out that my Seattle based DDIL's company is having all employee's telecommute until further notice and my DS's office is on break for the next 2 weeks, so that helps me breathe a little easier. For 2 weeks.

Feds are investigating the WA facility where the deaths have occurred. Says the state fined them last April for not following infectious disease procedures after a flu outbreak. Issues were found to be corrected 6 month later, but did they continue to follow protocols after that? www.khq.com/news/feds-investigate-nursing-home-as-u-s-death-toll-hits/article_63bacc24-5ee7-11ea-a358-0384cb1b4f13.htmlIf there were not following correct procedures, it's horrible that this facility could have possibly prevented the spread, or had no or fewer deaths. Lots of peas have said they have family members in similar places. Are you hearing from these facilities that they are following strict procedures for this or at least what they plan to do? What have your facilities done in the past if they have a flu or norovirus type break out?

So after a deadly and destructive tornado blows through Nashville (and Cookeville Tn), Nashville has its first confirmed coronavirus as of last night. I am not one for hysteria regarding this stuff, but it's not what the City needs right now.

Someone upthread asked why so few of the residents in Wuhan were officially diagnosed. Could it be partially because of the closing of factories and businesses, slowing the transmission rate way down?

Someone upthread asked why so few of the residents in Wuhan were officially diagnosed. Could it be partially because of the closing of factories and businesses, slowing the transmission rate way down? Yes, it could be. It could also be that only a small percentage of the residents were tested. It could also be, as many speculate, that China is not releasing accurate information. Or all of the above.

Well, we have had two deaths and a school closure so far in my area, so I for one think being prepared (eg, having a plan for work if your kid’s school closes) is smart. I am going about my day to day life as normal, with more groceries and cleaning supplies than normal, and a pocket hand sanitizer for use in my car and office. But my 88-year-old dad lives in Kirkland, where the first US death occurred, and is having surgery today at a hospital with a patient who is in isolation for the virus, so I am not brushing this off like your friend. I care if my dad (and my mother who lives with him) catch this and die. They get flu shots religiously. We can’t do anything about this. How is your dad doing? Sending good thoughts! The tumor was too big so he couldn’t have the surgery; he is getting radiation instead. Thank you Here in Seattle, lots of warning signs that things like city government offices are about to shut down. My law school is still running, but I had ten or so students absent today, and I am on the board of an organization that is deciding for a second time whether or not to cancel our 100-person meeting next week. We’re getting training today on how to conduct classes online.

11am local news update. King County (where we’ve had 2 deaths thus far) has purchased a motel which they will be using to isolate patients. They also are purchasing modular housing units from Texas (usually used to house oil workers) to be brought here and used for patients. If you’re sick and tired of it.... <——— and that is not an action or reaction I typically use on this board. I try to be respectful of everyone’s opinions. For some of us, this is a real thing, not some abstract out there thousands of miles away. Never mind, we’re now at 5 deaths in King County. Heartbreaking. ETA: further into the briefing. It’s now at 6 patients who have died over the weekend.

My healthy 16 year old currently has pneumonia. My healthy 18 year old has asthma. My dad is 68 with a history of chronic pneumonia and bronchitis. My father in law is 74 with diabetes and is currently undergoing treatment for prostate cancer. I think it's really tasteless to dismiss the risk of a global epidemic of a respiratory virus only because you personally don't fall into a high risk group. (Or in some cases I've seen it from anti-vaxxers who want to make a political point. Equally tasteless.) Italy doesn't have any of the "issues" (real or not) that your friend identified about China - what's her explanation for the outbreak there? At any rate, I am not panicking. I haven't canceled our upcoming trip to NYC, I sent my kid with asthma on 2 different airplanes yesterday, I let my kid with pneumonia attend multiple events with large crowds over the last few days. Simply wondering why you would let your kid with pneumonia out in large crowds, where they could infect other people? OR pick up a potentially life threatening secondary infection?

It might be overdone, but honestly, I was glad that in the noon meeting I had to go to, everyone skipped shaking hands. We just nodded and waved.

As many of you know I'm in Seattle, near downtown. There has been a good amount of conversation from our local leaders who are trying to manage this virus in our city, country, state. They are not getting pertainent information and direction from the federal government about who gets tested, guidelines for managing those who have come in contact with those who have tested positive, etc. I had dinner the other night with a good sized group of friends, half of whom still work. These are women high up in government banking, education, and medicine (one also has a daughter who is a Dr specializing in infectious disease, so you can imagine the stories she's hearing). Dealing with this is the main crux of their workload right now. By the way, there was a sign on the restaurant door asking that those with cold or flu symptoms to please not come inside and to cancel their reservation online. It's the real deal here. Schools have been closed for cleanings. One school district has already moved to online learning for the next 2 weeks. Meanwhile, 9 dead in our community since Friday. More local cases announced daily. One new patient works a mile away from me and in an area of town I'm in frequently (I'll be there twice next week, both in large social settings of 50+ people). It will likely grow like wildfire in this particular Seatte neighborhood as it is densly populated and there are thousands of workers (predominately) tech workers who work in the area daily. Saving grace is that most are under the age of 40 so hopefully it won't be as devistating as it's been at the nursing facility in Kirkland. Also, I would imagine that many will be able to tele-work fairly easily. After last night's announcement I came to the realization that most likely many people in this area will become infected, myself included....I feel like it's simply inevitable. I can only hope that my health is such that it doesn't turn into more than a mild illness for me. Buckle up, buttercups.....and if you have hand sanitizer an/or isopropyl alcohol) available in your area and would consider mailing some to me (I'd pay of course) please send me a PM. I don't use it typically, and am washing my hands like mad, but it's still something I'd like to have on hand. Thanks ETA: mid-day news is on and it is being reported that it's now 10 dead since Friday. Stay safe Michy! I don't have hand sanitizer or I'd send you some. Are you rethinking your meetups with the 50+ people?

Interesting email from work today. Basically says that if any employee travels to an at risk country -(currently China, Iran, Italy, Japan, Indonesia, Malaysia & South Korea) then they MUST take an extra 14 days of their own personal leave once they return from travel & isolate themselves and be symptom free before they will be allowed back to work. If people don't have 14 days of leave entitlements then it will be unpaid.
They are also cancelling surgery for all patients who have recently returned from these countries.
2 ladies I work with both have trips booked to Japan.

One of my volunteer friend's sister lives in China (she's American) and was on vacation with her family when the virus quarantines started. They haven't been able to go home for weeks now. I think my friend said they are stuck in Thailand. I think they are sick and tired of coronavirus...

Because in Rand Paul-type-Republican land, you can have money to fight Coronavirus OR foreign aid.
You can't have both though cuz then we might have to raise taxes on the m/billionaires.
This is the same Rand Paul, mind, who voted for tax CUTS for m/billionaires even though it added over $1TRILLION to the deficit.
Are you getting who is important in our society!??!?

Oh thank you A lovely, wonderfully kind pea just mailed me 2 bottles today, due to arrive Saturday <3 <3 <3 All in all, I haven't altered my social life much, but I'm very aware that things can change on a dime and will deal with it if/when they do. I have a friend who is a transplant recipient. Her social life has changed drastically in the last week. She and I are going for a walk together tomorrow morning, she feels that outdoors is more safe than indoors, and we'll keep a decent distance from one another. I'm using good hygiene practices, washing my hands all the time, which is really all I can do. I have seasonal allergies and I feel like I need a sign on my front and back stating so these days.

For 2 weeks. If things worsen they'll surely extend these plans, won't they? Economic hit is going to be huge, for sure... On the news last night they were interviewing a geoduck farmer. For those who don't know, geoduck (pronounced gooey duck) is a very goofy, almost phallic looking clam-like crustacean native to the PNW, west coast of BC, and Alaska. It is considered a delicacy in China. In the last 2 months the farmer has only been harvesting 85% of normal because the Chinese ports are all but locked down so he can't send any there. He's had to let a lot of his workforce go, and forsees having to let everyone go soon. And so it goes....

It's been an interesting couple of days here just south of Seattle.
1) There has been NO traffic on my way to work. I usually give myself an hour travel time and it's been taking me 20 minutes tops. 70mph on the freeways the whole way.
2) I work at a place where classes come on field trips. We've had a rush of cancellations yesterday and today. Many of the local school districts are restricting all field trips (and some are cancelling all extra-curricular activities).
There will definitely be an economic impact.

The date is subject to change.

Yesterday I found hand sanitizer at Bath and Body works. I don't know if people aren't thinking of places like this or what but if you can't find any you can try there. That’s where I found some on Monday. I had already been to dollar tree and staples. I knew most of the other options were out. Hubby went to a different dollar tree and found sone and bought one for each of us. The bath and body works stuff is heavily scented just an fyi.
