5.7, with lots of aftershocks so far. It woke me up, and I live in the mountains about 50 miles away.
Not an awesome time for this to happen. :/

I haven’t seen any reports of injuries so far (knock on freaking wood), but 1̶2̶K̶ 46K without power, and my sister just told me the airport is closed.
I really don’t think it was too bad, but SLC has always lived under the threat of “the big one” that is supposedly long overdue. In addition to being along a fault line, the soil in the Salt Lake Valley is very sandy, so I think it creates sort of a wave as it moves from the epicenter.
It’s just nerve wracking, in light of everything else. Was this it? Just a precursor? ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Oh man, I hope everyone is okay.
Is anybody else thinking that this is their worst nightmare-being in isolation without power or internet? I will confess that that came to my mind immediately.

Gennifer I started a thread about it, but yours is a much better thread title! Mine is what's next locusts? I felt it where I live. And it lasted quite a while.
ETA: I'm 85 miles away

That was what I thought! With all the unsettlement of the last week, I couldn’t imagine waking up to this and not knowing what is going on. At my house, if the power goes out, so does my cell service and internet. I would be clueless.

I saw a meme saying, “2020. This episode of Black Mirror sucks. “
I am glad you are safe and hope that no one is hurt and damage is minimal.

How scary!! Good grief.
I also live not far from a fault line that scientists always say is long overdue for a big one--the New Madrid fault. We have smallish ones on other fault lines every once in a while, and even those are scary. The one I remember the most was in I think 2007 or 8, it was 4. something, and it shook our house and woke us all up in the middle of the night. I did a lot of reading about the NM fault after that and wow, scary stuff! A big one on that fault would reverberate almost the whole entire US.
UGH I do NOT need anything else to worry about. LOL I hope the one in Utah was a fluke and not a precursor to a bigger one. I know I always worry about that when we have those smaller ones.

They gave 2 hours off of work immediately at my husband's work. We're fine here, so he's going to go see if he can find a few more essentials for home and he's going back to work. Otherwise, it will be unpaid leave.

Yikes! Forgive my ignorance, but are earthquakes common in Utah? Not really. I guess there was similar one a few years ago in the very southwest corner of the state (near Vegas) , but I’ve basically lived here my whole life and have never felt one before.

I've felt a couple over the years, small ones. There is a huge fault that runs along the Wasatch front. We have an annual "Great Shake Out" awareness campaign that everyone basically ignores. Most of our earthquakes aren't very big, but we are always under threat of a large one. I felt this mornings, and one of the larger aftershocks, I live near refugeepea. Before today, the last earthquake I felt was epicentered in Idaho.

I live about 5 miles from the epicenter. My daughter is about 3 miles away. We've been really shaking off and on for over two hours. I haven't found any damage here other than a few things fallen off shelves, but then we have worked pretty hard to prepare for quakes. Today I'm really glad that we got those quake-proof hangers for our pictures. I would have hated to clean up that much broken glass. My daughter's house has developed a crack in the drywall, but looks like it it structurally still sound. Their big 'catastrophe' was all the Lego models that they have built hit the floor and broke. lol.

I hope the power is restored quickly. My first thought when I read that it was out was “all that food they just bought!”

My sister lives in Bountiful (North Salt Lake) they felt it but all is okay there. They didn't lose power and don't have any damage so that is good.

I think that one was back in the '90s (at least according to what I read this morning). I have lots of coworkers who live in South Jordan (I think, maybe West Jordan? One of the Jordans lol) and they were all hit hard. No injuries, but stuff falling off shelves and breaking, etc. But even people who live closer to our office in Lehi, or all the way in Orem, felt it.

My sister has been feeling all of the aftershocks. She was thinking when she felt #19 it might be pointless to keep counting. Her water has turned brown. Her friends are joking that she should go to the store and buy bottled water.
An online friend in Draper checked his gas meter and discovered he could smell gas. He suggested everyone assessing their gas as he would not have known had he not smelled it.
Earthquakes are somewhat common though most too small to feel. They are common enough that many of the cities have put on emergency disaster plans and have drills. My husband and I were part of how it worked in our area of Riverton when we lived there 6 years ago. Some of the cities are much more proactive about it than others.
